Congratulations to Mr Anthony Jack, Mr Nathan Hando and all the staff who were at the 2017 Swimming Carnival. The weather was kind to us and there was good attendance. The reports I had from staff were positive and our students were well behaved. Our focus at Swimming Carnivals is always participation in a competitive and respectful way.

Principal’s Report

Learning@Richmond

In 2014 the teaching staff at Richmond High developed a model that identified 5 key stages in the learning process.

Our focus in 2017 is to recognise success in learning and one way that students can find the road to success is through an understanding what is takes to be a successful learner. I recently addressed the school at an assembly and provided the following advice to students:

1. We all have ability – whether we use it or not is a personal choice. No one can make you learn. Only you can make a commitment to learn.

2. Ability means nothing without effort. We need to try hard and not give up. We need to accept that we will not always be as successful as we would like to be. The important thing is to learn from this.

3. We all need support with our learning. We can’t all know everything and some things we will find difficult. The most difficult things to learn often bring the most satisfaction when we are successful.

4. At Richmond High School we do provide opportunities for all students to achieve success. We recognise student success at a range of levels.

5. In learning there is no pass or fail. There is only success or a lack of success because of a lack of effort, application and determination.

In partnership with our parents my staff are committed to teaching to enable all students to reach their potential as successful life-long learners.

Congratulations to Ms Kim Jones for her organization of the Year 6 Mini Lessons. These Mini Lessons form one part of our Transition to the Richmond High School program. Our Year 6 students were excited to be in High School and enjoyed the lessons provided by my capable staff. This is another example of showcasing success and what is possible at Richmond High School. I would like to invite our parents of Year 5 & 6 students to our Open Evening on Tuesday 7th March commencing at 5.30 pm.

Learning Profiles and Learning Plans

In the last edition of the Newsletter Mrs Cullen out-lined the purpose and process for developing a Learning Profile for every student at Richmond High School. These provide staff with insights into each students learning so that they can develop lessons that cater for each students learning needs.

At Richmond High our Learning and Support team also develop Learning Plans for students who are identified as requiring specific strategies so that they can engage in learning. Mrs Annie Farmer and Mrs Crystal Skinner lead the development of Individual Education Plans and Out of Home Care Plans. Our Year Advisors develop Personalised Learning Path-ways for our Aboriginal students. Our Administration Staff collate the information for Health Care Plans.

All of this work is aimed at providing the most up to date and relevant information on our students. The development of these plans is always in consultation with parents and carers. If you receive a request for information please provide this to the relevant staff member so that we can update our records and plans.

Deputy Principal’s Report Opportunities at RHS

We have had a wonderful start to the term with lots of students being involved in a variety of whole school events. We are very proud to be the Deputies at Richmond High School partly because of the wide range of activities this school has on offer for our students.

On Monday, 20th February we attended the Rotary Scholarship Dinner to congratulate Tyla B, the successful applicant of the award. The meal was catered for by Richmond High School Hospitality students and was led by Ms Vaz and our Hospitality staff. Tyla is a true example of a student who has embraced all that Richmond High School has to offer and we would like to extend our congratulations to her on being the successful winner of this prestigious scholarship.

The RHS Swimming Carnival was another successful event that took place last week. It was wonderful to see the community spirit with staff and students involved in the events throughout the day. Congratulations to all students who participated in the events and a special mention to Brieanna H in Year 10 who broke several records on the day.

We encourage all students to embrace all the school has to offer and immerse themselves in the co-curricular activities we provide.

Pack for Learning

The last two weeks in roll call, the PBL team focus has been ‘Pack for Learning’. The students have engaged in mini lessons about our expectations and being equipped for school.

The R.O.A.D to Success continues to underpin our school focus throughout 2017 and the launch led by Mr Gordon & the PBL team was highly successful.

A special thank you to our school community and parents who encourage our students to have the right equipment for school each and every week.

Year 6 Information Evening

Over the last two weeks we have been very fortunate to have students from our local Primary School visiting for mini lessons. Ms Jones (Year 6 Transition Advisor) has done an outstanding job welcoming the students and providing them with a ‘taste’ of what Richmond High School is all about.

On Tuesday the 7th March we also have our Information Evening for Years 5 & 6 parents who are interested in sending their children to our school. It is a great opportunity for families to meet teachers and take a tour of our school and its facilities.

Our annual Swimming Carnival was held on Tuesday, 21st February at Richmond Pool. Students demonstrated great team spirit by coming dressed up in their house colours. Thank you to Mr Jack and Mr Hando for their wonderful organisation of the day.

A massive thank you to Cathy James in the school canteen for her huge effort in catering for the entire staff with a beautiful lunch on the swimming carnival day. Cathy spent numerous hours preparing assorted bread rolls, lollies and drinks. The staff really appreciate it Cathy!

Congratulations to our Age Champions for 2017:

Some of the age champions and runners up this year are proof that participation in ALL events is more important than their particular placing in 1 or 2 events!

The more events students participate in - the more points they accumulate (regardless of their placing) toward age champion rather then just entering 1 or 2 races and placing 1st or 2nd in those 2 events.

Congratulations must go to Brieanna H (Year 10) on her outstanding achievement in breaking two new school records.

Record Breaker

It has just come to our attention that our Year 8 student, Jasmine B broke a Hawkesbury City Little Athletics record late last year. The record for the 3000 metre run stood for twenty two years. Jasmine smashed seven seconds off the record, bringing it down to eleven minutes and thirty eight seconds. Jasmine has been competing in athletics since she was four years of age and hopes to one day represent Australia at the Olympic Games.

Freestyle Dressage

Good luck to Jessica C, Year 11, who will be competing in Freestyle Dressage at the ASH National Show on Friday 3rd March in Tamworth.

Thank you Richmond High School Students……

From: Venecia Wilson <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, 24 February 2017 8:35 AM To: School, Richmond-h Subject: Thank you to 2 students In William Cox Drive this morning, the council recycling truck clipped a branch on a tree, breaking it off and knocking it down. The truck then drove away, leaving the large branch on the road. Two Richmond High students (boys) on their scooters on their way to school, stopped and cleared the branch off the road. A resident told them not to worry, to leave it as they would call council, however the boys said that it would cause an accident and moved it onto the verge. I don't know who the two boys were, but were not seniors - maybe Year 9 or 10. Just wanted to let you know as it was a very good example of civic responsibility.

Regards, Venecia Wilson.

2017 NSW All Schools Triathlon Report This year Richmond High School was represented by four teams competing in the annual NSW All Schools Triathlon. This was a state-wide event which was held at Penrith Regatta Centre on Thursday, 23rd February. For most of our teams this was their second year of entering and some were hoping to improve on last year’s times. While for others it was their first time participating in this huge event that attracts around 2,500 competitors - all tackling the three tiered race, but they approached it with awe and nervous excitement. They were competing against schools from all over the state, up and down the coast, including Bathurst, Orange, Shoalhaven and Coffs Harbour.

The 2017 NSW All Schools Triathlon was held during a summer of record heat conditions, so officials ensured an early start to the races, registering at 7.00am to avoid students racing in the midday heat. The weather turned out to be a little less hot then expected, and the runners got an arch of water sprinklers to cool them off before getting to the finish line. So given these conditions, our four teams put in a courageous effort and these are their results:

Junior Team 1: Levi H/Cody F/Harry D - Finished 23rd in Government Schools, which was a huge improvement on last year’s results, with all 3 boys gaining excellent times.

Junior Team 2: Ben I/Timothy D/Josh E - Finished 32nd, with Tim’s cycling leg placing him at 25th in the State.

Junior Team 3: Connor F/Cody V/Zaylan S - Finished 31st in Government Schools, with Zaylan putting in a huge Personal Best with his Run, 22nd in State; for Connor and Cody, a great effort for their first Triathlon, especially Cody who did so well on a bike borrowed only days before the race.

Intermediate Team 4: Brieanna H/Erin L/Alana H - Finished 33rd in Government Schools, which was a fantastic effort considering these girls were competing in the next age group, which meant a much longer and challenging distance.

Brieanna did her best in a competitive swim leg, while Erin knuckled down and did a great 15km cycle; for Alana who has waited two years to compete, she also had a very commendable run.

Well done to all our teams and a special thank you to the keen parents who came along for support at such an early start to the day. If you are interested in competing next year, start training this year, join a swimming/cycling or athletic club. Penrith Regatta is so close for our school students to access for training practice.

Hospitality’s Big Night

The Year 11 and Year 12 Hospitality students catered for the Rotary Dinner in the Trade Training Centre on Monday, 20th February. The students did a wonderful job with the catering and service of the meals.

NRL All Stars Youth Summit 2017

We recently had two Year 11 students attend the NRL All Stars Youth Summit. Well done Jarrod B and Tara A for representing our school.

The leadership summit is attended by over sixty Indigenous youth from across Australia. The aim is to continue encouraging students to value their education and aspire to achieve meaningful employment, training or further studies while embracing their unique culture and identity.

“Tara and I were granted the grand opportunity of participating in the 2017 NRL All Stars Indigenous Youth Summit over four days in February. Selected students from all over Australia and New Zealand met at NRL Central (Moore Park) and were bussed to the University of Newcastle. We stayed here for the duration of the summit. We were up at 6:00am every day for training which involved boot camp, walking, boxing and pilates. We had meals with the Indigenous All Stars and World All Star teams. Tara and I sat with Greg Inglis and Johnathan Thurston. Over the course of the summit we met all the other players from the Indigenous All Stars team.

Activities we were involved in over the summit included mini-classes on; What type of learners we are, Resume and essay writing, Group activities, Interview for the position of Ambassador for Indigenous Youth, Virtual reality classes. Cultural activities included; Boomerang throwing, Didgeridoo playing and Cultural stories. We also participated in the pre-game activities prior to the All Stars Game. It was so exciting being on the field with such a huge crowd and with new friends working together!

Tara and I felt very privileged to have won selection to this summit from so many entrants and we gained so much from the experience.”

Duke of Edinburgh’s Top 100

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award – Australia (NSW Division) recently informed us that Richmond High School has made the ‘Top 100’ Award Units in NSW.

Today more than 140 countries have adopted The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award program with over 8 million young people having participated worldwide.

Research conducted by Western Sydney University concluded that: “… improvements to a Participant’s self-confidence, ability to cope with change (resilience), leadership, overall effectiveness and active involvement could be directly attributed to participation in the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award…”.

Congratulations to Mr Hando and our Duke of Edinburgh team. The many hours that the team dedicates to providing opportunities for our students is valued and appreciated.

Chinese Cultural visit 2017

On Thursday the 9th and Friday 10th of February we welcomed a small but keen cohort of 27 students and 2 teachers from our sister school in China. They were here to experience school life in Richmond. We’d hosted students from Dajing Middle school in Shanghai a number of times before. In 2014, I had the pleasure of visiting their school for 2 days. For this reason, it was with especially great excitement that I anticipated their arrival and so we planned fun things for them to do.

They were shown around the school by amazing student ambassadors, learnt about the Agriculture plot and joined the Year 8 sport classes on day one. The following day, Mrs Middleton conducted a science demonstration lesson, I played the bowls game “boules” or “bocci” with them in room 13 as their French experience and then they cooked pizzas for lunch with Ms Vaz.

Lastly, we exchanged presents which is always the best part. We provided them with the most Australian lollies and snacks and notebooks that we could find - Tim Tams, Allens Snakes, Vegemite dip snacks, Caramelos, etc.

The feedback was that they really had a fun time and were very thankful for their experience here with us. Life in China is very stressful and you really have to study so hard to get ahead in a country with such a large population. These students and teachers really profited from the experience and are very keen to welcome Richmond High to their school in the near future.

Finally, thank you to Mrs Nixon for her coordination of the day, and to the teachers who enabled the successful experience.

Thank-you also to the following students who volunteered

their time to help: Olivia BJ, Helen X, Alana H, Hayley T, Amelia A, Faith S, Joshua E, Mitchell S, Jacob K, Jesse-Tayla K, Jasmine D, Hayden T, Kaylee B, Ellen P, Isabella B and Jazmin R.

Year 6 Hawkesbury Leadership Camp

On Friday the 3rd of February four students from each school in the Hawkesbury participated in a planning day to help organise the Year 6 Hawkesbury Leadership camp at Yarramundi. Year 10 SRC students Brieanna H, Harrison M, Chevelle M and Aaron M represented Richmond High School.

During the planning day the students were involved in several activities to help them get to know one another. This assisted them when they were put into groups with students from the other schools. Each group had to think of an activity that would allow the Year 6 students to develop

leadership skills. We were split into groups of 3 and we had specific guidelines to meet. The activity also had to be fun and interactive and incorporate leadership skills. Each activity had to be quick to set up, which really helped on the night. When completed, the ideas were presented to a group of teachers and three Principals. They were surprised with the phenomenal ideas and gave helpful criticism to further assist the students with their ideas. After the negotiations on equipment and transport we said our Farewells to our groups and headed back to our schools.

On Thursday the 9th of February the students and teachers met at Yarramundi at 7pm. Six activities were conducted; drama games, tennis ball relay challenge, blindfold trust game, spaghetti tower, capture the flag and the newspaper fashion parade. These were held in the large dining room, hard courts, and grassed playing areas. There were 6 groups in total, 18 primary school students per group and the night concluded at 9pm.

Both Mr Ralph and Ms Garcia were in attendance on the night. The high school students were picked up or bussed back home after being congratulated by both the teachers and the Year 6 students. For the students of Richmond High, we learned how to engage and control groups of younger students as well as creating and managing structured activities.

We look forward to seeing some of the Year 6 students at Richmond High School next year!

Snapchat Schooldayz at Richmond High School

The Hawkesbury Gazette recently launched a fresh new social media initiative: Snapchat Schooldayz. On Thursday, February 23rd, Richmond High School students were given the reins to The Hawkesbury Gazette’s Snapchat account to show Snapchatters through our school.

Snapchat Schooldayz gives students from local schools complete creative control over The Gazette’s daily Snap Story to share with followers what it’s like to spend a day in the life as a student at their school.

We would like to invite all our female students and their mothers, grandmothers, aunties, sisters and best friends to a one hour talk to celebrate International Women’s Day!

The speaker will be Dannielle Miller who has been named one of Australia’s emerging leaders and one of the most inspiring women over 40. She is also the author of some best selling books which focus on raising happy, confident teen girls.

In this one hour talk, Dannielle gives insight into some of the struggles that impact on girls and women. Dannielle reveals why so many of us are overwhelmed and most importantly, offers a path forward. This talk is positive, uplifting and empowering. It is a fabulous way to connect teens and the significant women in their lives.

The presentation will occur on International Women’s Day - March 8th, 2017 in our Trade Training Centre beginning at 6.00pm. Refreshments will be provided after the one hour talk.

So that we are able to cater for all those wishing to attend the night, would you please RSVP to the Front Office by March 6th, 2017.

School Subject Fees & Voluntary Contributions 2017 (Continued)

PLEASE NOTE: There is a textbook hire fee of $75.00 in Year 11 and for any new enrolments in Years 11 and 12. This is refundable when all textbooks are returned on leaving.

HOSPITALITY: Students are required to purchase an Industry Standard Uniform which is approximately $60.00. This will occur during the first few weeks of Term 1. This is a mandatory requirement.

It is also a mandatory requirement for students doing Hospitality to wear leather, covered-in black shoes.

TEXT BOOKS: Textbooks are not directly supplied by the Department of Education, although the Government Global Grant is of considerable assistance.

Because of rapid changes in the content of subjects studied and the consequent necessity of keeping up to date, the provision of textbooks will always be of budgetary importance. School contributions are partly used to purchase textbooks and to buy class sets of books for daily use.

Parents can help to keep textbook costs down by:

Ensuring that textbooks are covered and not mistreated.

Providing their children with firm cases in which books may be carried without damage.

N.B Damage and loss of textbooks must be covered by students responsible.

Tax Deductible Funds

Richmond High School offers two tax deductible funds to provide much needed resources.

The Library Fund will provide resources for books and resources for the School Library.

The Building Fund will be used to provide improved building facili-ties, air-conditioning and so on. Parents choosing to take ad-vantage of tax concessions by donating money to these funds need to complete a separate form. Individual receipts will be issued with donations made to these funds (over $2.00).

* Fees are subject to change
