MAGENTA PROGRAM

• FIRES

Congratulations to any club members who have been helping with the

Bush Fire effort. Greg Spencer was planning to race his recent acquisition NS

14 “Sherlock”, last Sunday. He stayed home, to help with efforts to contain the

Mt Nardia fire. I’m sure that other absent members were involved , too.

*From Commodore Phill

Building Heights and Wind I just had a meeting with the Mayor and head town planner over our concerns about building heights along the river. They obviously did not give any guarantees; just explained the current height limits and advised their open door policy to people's concerns. Neither the Mayor or head planner were previously aware of how buildings could affect our wind so our main aim in raising the issue was achieved. They are now aware of our concerns and that we might object to future high buildings on the river edge. Regards Phill

CLUB MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

Would you like to brush up your racing technique, under the guidance of an expert?

The Club is building up a register of sailors who’d like to either Mentor, or be Mentored.

Contact Commodore Phill, if you’re interested.

QUIZ (Please send any good Quiz questions to Mark [email protected])

What’s this, and what sail boat does it belong to? Hint:

it’s usually made of 1-2mm stainless

Matt answered “I reckon it holds the keel down in one of the

trailer sailers”

This answer is warm, but not correct

HINT: It’s from a Corsair dinghy

There’s a hint on p 39 of this story about a guy who sailed a Corsair single-handed from Sydney to Cairns. He didn’t use one of the devices pictured – and he paid the price!! (It’s a fun story – he came to grief on the Ballina bar!)

COL’S COLUMN (Occasional pearls of wisdom from Colin Hinwood ;-))

New capsize Recovery Method It has taken us to 2019 to discover a better capsize recovery method.

The winds of this season has allowed much experimentation.

The reactionary swim around and pull down etc is now superseded, and of course some are claiming they did

this new method all along.

Method – as shown by this sailor in .. blue? who would wear a .. blue lifejacket?? anyway .. with the

capsized boat in the normal position, ..with mast trying to sink, the sailor pushes Up!! at the correct moment

.. to push the boat back to upright, being ready to grab to rail so it does not take off.

This may require careful selection of Life Jacket to ensure buoyancy is sufficient for the ..thrust upward.

This is an exercise in timing, … as with all sailing.

RACING 10-11-19

30 boats competed yesterday in a lovely 8-10 knot ESE erly, taking our minds briefly off the other horrendous weather conditions. Trailers note that it was Race 4 of non-Champ day Handicap series. Phill

Our usual photographers were all away on Sunday, so Laura provided a few pics of her Intermediate

trainees ☺ - thanks Laura

Mono Report – Pointscore Day 101119 (Thanks Col W – Ed)

Just a nice day .. finally some peace from the endless rough blow-ya-head-off winds that hit us every sailing

day since the start of the season.

A chance for those with new boats, crew, sails etc .. to actually see what is what, without concentrating on

staying upright.

Wind was 12knots SE, ending up 5knots, run-out tide, so wind straight down the slot, and great fleet racing

for us – 9 boats .

First work was … why we race dinghies .. just great exchange of tactics, with the difference in tide flow

across the river deciding on who crossed who .. next cross.

Fair dinkum .. couldn’t see the Top Mark for smoke ..eerie feeling.

Cameron decided to do some boat maintenance on the Start Line, so was delayed a tad from the action for a

while - .. one of the consequences of leaving the boat at the Club = no fiddling with wonky bits thru the

week.

The downwinds were excellent, as the tide meant sailing all sorts of angles to avoid tide in the lesser wind.

One of the classic moments, was when guru GF ran his NS aground .. like AGROUND – while leading us

along the sandbank going up to the Red. Like this is a Club Landmark .. like hands up who hasn’t .. none, but

.. just the week before I had said to Trent .. if in doubt follow GF .. uummm…

And .. with the lighter wind and finesse starting to matter again, … the cream rising to the top, with Mr Hams

first across in the SH Ns’s, and Cameron first across in the impulses, Laser Dave to take the day on CT, and

well sailed on a first season in a Laser .. woulda taken VYC too [if we did that].

Have to mention Duncan, short handed, running around organising Duty stuff to make sure we had a good

day, and Hamsy sorting the gourmet tucker .. might be trying to impress Merideth that he can do such a great

job without her.

Just a nice day.

MONO REPORT – thanks Graham Hams

Finally! A gentle SE breeze, and the punters turned up to enjoy the day. Nine boats faced the starter on the standard SE course with a lingering ebb tide to boost upwind speed. Dave got he best of the start at the pin end with G1 (Graeme Flemming) in close contact along with a gaggle of Impulses. Up the first beat, Dave in the Laser, G1 with Dash in the bow and G2 (Graham Hodgins) led the way. G3 (Graham Hams) and G4 (Graeme Turner) were locked into a tacking duel close behind. Anyone now confused by the plethora of G's can now leave the room...At the top mark G1 held a three boat length lead to G3 and then Dave. There was an intense battle brewing in the mid-fleet with positions changing and tactics were being deployed to frustrate rivals. Down the run postions held steady until G1 over-estimated the depth of water on the mud bank in the ebb and hit hard generating a round-up and a loss of the lead. G3 in Alter Ego passed by safely and into the lead that wasn't challenged for the rest of the race. Scratch results were; Alter Ego then Abedare, Retro and Wiful Intent (just seconds apart) Then came Hammin it up and Caddy, again with just seconds in it. On handicap, Dave in the Laser won easily and at a rough glance would have done the VYC double. Well done! Des in Olde Golde is still on a mission to reduce his handicap with a well sailed second place here. A dead heat between G2 in Retro and Colin in Caddy for third showed how close this race was on handicap. The VYC placings would have been very, very tight - what a day, what a race!

Gennakers 10 November 2019 (thanks Michael – Ed)

With Duncan on duty, only Vince in 5BuckaRooS and Garry in Hooray represented the RS100’s, and an offshore race and a wedding reducing the Formula Fleet to only four boats, for what was a very pleasant day on the water. No surprise with Duncan onboard with Starter Rick, we had a strongly port end favoured start. With Casper’s favourite spot vacated, Hooray claimed the Port end, although despite Duncan’s heated coaching to get him in gear he was going real slow. It didn’t take long for Vince, the F15s and the 49er to sail over the top of Hooray. With most boats getting a clean start in the reasonably benign conditions (for a change), the fleet soon sorted itself into the Formula Fifteen part and the RS100 part, with Liam and Ewan in the 40FX moving out ahead of all of them. Laura and Francine in Mr Bond fell behind, while Secret (Barry and Anna), Toxic (Tom and Brendan) and Second Wind (Michael and Tara) formed a tight pack as the lead Fifteens, with the lead subject to constant change. Secret was first to move out ahead, with Toxic in close pursuit. Second Wind closed the gap on the run so that, as Secret fouled it’s kite takedown, Toxic moved into the lead with Second Wind right behind up the next work. Toxic continued to lead for much of the race until the last time around the bottom mark where a grounding let both Secret and Second Wind overtake it; setting up the places following the 49 FX across the line at the finish. Hooray once again had a happy day chasing Vince’s tail, with a gybe swim not helping put any pressure on Vince who stayed dry and had what looked like an easy day at the office. On handicap, Garry in Hooray took first, followed by Toxic, the Mr Bond with the 49FX fourth

Cat Report (thanks Jonathon _Ed)

What difference a week makes, very light wind, poor visibility due the smoke from all the

bushfires. It looked possible that the forecast of wind under 5 knots was going to come true.

The wooden paddle had been placed on board 2 FOOT Extra during the morning

preparations. Just prior to the briefing the first puffs of the SE sea breeze appeared, and it was

decided to sail with a SE course as some of the wind predictions had the wind shifting just

north of east.

A fleet of seven cats left the beach early to ensure they would make it to the start, up past the

RSL in time. As the fleet headed off, the breeze filled in to about 10 knots and all had plenty

of time to reach the start. With a short starting line set it was not possible for a cat to risk a

port start. So all the cats crowded the southern end, Ozspray tried to squeeze 2 FOOT Extra

but only succeeded in having to pull to avoid being over the line early, slowing both cats.

This allowed Finely Tuned to power around both cats and to temporarily take the lead. Once

2 FOOT Extra powered up it was able to pass both Ozspray and Finely Tuned on the first leg

of the work. Apart from a close crossing astern of tacks by Finely Tuned that was the last

time 2 FOOT Extra was challenged out front. With the breeze now a nice 10+ knots all the

cats were handling the wind easily.

Shore Thing after a good start was passed by Ozspray on the downwind, as the field settled

into following the leaders. The 2 5.8’s used their larger sail area to good advantage around

the course, although Ozspray keep closing on Finely Tuned on the downwind legs. First

Strike was pushing Shore Thing all race and managed to come home ahead, the light breezes

did not favour Shore Thing. N52 had good race, and only No Waiting was lapped, Alan had a

good sail out on his own.

The over the line results were soon forgotten as the handicapper applied his trade. At the end

of the calculations, it was First Strike, Tony with his first win for the season. N52 in second,

well sailed Drew. The ever competitive Ozspray home third. The light winds allowing the

smaller and lighter boats to perform, against the tides.

Many thanks to all those club members who helped, Special thanks to Rick for running the

rescue boat, ably assisted by Duncan. A very enjoyable afternoons sailing, the wooden

paddle worked to ensure the breeze was not too light.

TRAILERABLES REPORT – Thanks Matt

Andrew commented on arrival at the club that it was feeling like we were in Asia with the thick smoke haze

that continued to thicken throughout the afternoon. I was concerned that we wouldn't get a race in with the

lack of wind but the south easterly came in about 12:30 and looked promising. The trailer sailers opted for a

windward-return course with 5 times around the top mark and through the gate.

Rod had a woopsy when leaving the beach and stripped the bark off his shins, luckily he had a nurse on

board to patch him up and continued on regardless. The south east course was set with the top mark set

unusually to the north of Mobbs bay entrance and this proved a good move with the wind swinging to the

north throughout the race. Sumerdream, Shades of grey, Treasure Island, eX, Serenity and Spudgun were the

competitors. All boats stated on starboard with a we behaved and good start for most, although I'm not sure

what happened to Shades of Grey. Spudgun was just in front of Treasure Island with Shades of Grey close

behind, making up to lost time, around the top mark.

On the run downwind Shades with its asymmetric spinnaker was gybing downwind out into the tide

while Spudgun hugged the bank to get out of the tide, this proved to be an advantage. Meanwhile, Treasure

Island had forgotten that it is the head not the clew of the spinnaker that should be attached to the halyard and

lost significant time. Serenity flew the big fella and put the whole river into wind shadow and looked

absolutely magnificent rolling along at hull speed.

There was a tussle between Shades and Spudgun throughout the race and shades was briefly in front until

that damn tide took it away again. It was good to see eX out and sailing with Dave Bowler assisting Norm to

work out his new boat. Summer dream sailed well too looking good with the kite out each run, even with a

skipper with injured shins.

First over the line was Spudgun followed by Shades with Treasure Island not far behind. Serenity finished

next grabbing the handicap win with Summerdream, who luckily opted to complete the last lap, finishing

next and bagging the second on handicap. For some reason eX opted to finish a lap early and did not record a

finish time.

Apart from the smoke haze the conditions were wonderful after the northerlies that we have been buffeted

with lately. Many thanks to Rick and Jan, as well as duty officer Duncan.

Cheers Matt
