Open Evening

Thank you to all students who helped at last week’s

Open Evening – as always, you did a fantastic job.

There were over 1000 visitors on the evening and they

seemed very impressed with what they saw. We have

received some great feedback including the following

twitter message from a parent:

“Thank you to the two lovely Year 11 girls who

showed us round @RiddledownC last

night. Very impressed.”

Year 11 Post 16 Transition Evening

There will be an important briefing for all parents of

Year 11 students this Thursday at 6.00pm regarding

the process and options for Post 16 studies. Mr Smith

and Ms Chant, Headteacher of College VI, are looking

forward to seeing all parents at this event.

Students are not expected at this briefing as Mr Smith and Ms Chant will speak with them in a special briefing on the same day at 8.50am.

The Miracle Rehearsals

I have given a bit of an overview below of what we did

and where we went. I will try and tie it in with some

pictures and I have tried to put the picture names in the

right place for you - I hope it makes sense! I have

written quite a lot but I hope some of it is useful!

We flew to Reykjavik where we spent the first night in

Iceland in a hostel. We got to explore the city and see

some of the old town (photos Reykjavik (14, 16)) before

heading deeper into the country to begin our trek.

We headed to Pingvellir, the area of the country where

the Eurasian and North American plates are splitting

apart. We went on walks over 2 days between the plates

in the huge rift, saw beautiful waterfalls and the building

where the first Icelandic Parliament was held. Students

quickly adapted to using the trangias and cooked us

some lovely food, despite the heavy rain!! (Pingvellir (9,

22, 28)).

After 2 very soggy days, we got aboard a bus and did a

tour of the Golden Circle to see the most fantastic

sights in Iceland, including Geysir with the most

spectacular displays by the geysers (although they did

smell a little eggy, Geysir (4)) and then on to a series of

waterfalls, including Gulfoss (Golden Circle (3+27) and

Seljalandsfoss (where we even got to walk behind the

waterfall, Golden Circle (26+34)).

From there we took a stunning drive through Porsmork

National Park where we got the first views of the

glaciers and we had to drive through the river - we were

not sure our bus was going to make it! We spent 3

nights here and took lovely treks up the very volcanic

landscape close to the Eyjafalljokull glacier and volcano

(which caused so many problems in its eruption in 2010

- Porsmork (19+33)) and you could see how the

landscape had been changed by melting glaciers

(causing flooding) and the volcanic eruptions. The

hardest part was getting to sleep, we saw a sunset

which still meant it was incredibly light (Porsmork (56)).

The teachers organised a quiz for both team 1 and team

2 and we had a fab time (Porsmosrk (54)). After long

days of walking we were lucky to have a thermal pool

and sauna on the campsite to help relax (porsmork

(41))!

We were very sad to leave Porsmork as it was so

stunning, but we got back on the bus and headed back

to Reykjavik. Both teams had a meal together on the

final night before heading out whale watching. It was a

very choppy trip and we say the fin of a Minke whale,

but lots of puffins (Whale watching (6))!! On the final day

we got up early and headed to the blue lagoon, which

was an amazing way to end the most fantastic trip.

Relaxing in the geothermal pools and using their

amazing face masks helped us recover our sore feet

from all the walking.

Please can cast members playing the

following characters attend rehearsal

on Tuesday and Thursday after school:

Ron, Zelda, Billy, Angela, Mrs

Brickman, Mrs Sheehan, Chewy, Barry

and Lorenzo

Date: Tuesday 30th September and

This Week’s Reminder

Keep The Astro Clean! Over the last week, we

have sadly noticed that

some students have left

litter on the brand new

astro. Remember that food

and drink must not be taken

into The Astro at any time. Don’t drop litter,

put it in the bin!

Please ensure that you leave The

Astro litter-free. Year Groups will be

banned from using The Astro if this

continues to be a problem this week.

And finally…Fun on the Farm!

Riddlesdown students visited Jamie's Farm

last week. Students and teachers swapped

their fast-paced, sugar-filled lives for a calm,

country experience and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Here are some of the highlights from the trip:

I had a great time and still

have the bruises to prove it

- Mr Mills

My best memory from Jamie's Farm was

swimming in the river. I also liked cooking pizza in

the outside oven and working with the horses.

Mitchel Moore

I enjoyed the whole experience because I have never done anything like this

before. I tried lots of new foods. I really enjoyed the night around the

campfire and all the walks. Kane Ayton
