2018 Benefit and Event Rides Each year, a number of benefit and event rides are included in our Ride Schedule to encourage members to support our local cycling clubs (e.g.Sacramento Wheelmen) and to provide oppor-tunities for members to participate in other organized events, set goals and challenges. To be included in our Ride Schedule, the ride must meet distance parameters of approximately no more than 100 miles from Sacramento (unless included as part of a Club Tour), be available to all members (no lotteries), no fund rais-ing is permitted. A Sacramento Bike Hiker must serve as “sign-in leader” responsible for the sign-in roster at the event. Club members may receive club miles for participating in an event Ride Starts Listed in the Ride Schedule if they register and pay the entry fee, sign-in on the club roster, and complete one of the of-ficial routes. Members are heartily encouraged to wear Bike Hiker apparel to show club affiliation.

Because of the increasing popularity of these rides, many now sell out before the ride date. To facilitate your goal planning and to give as much advance notice as possible, the following benefit and event rides have been approved for inclusion in our 2018 Ride Schedule. The following rides meet the requirements and have member support. We will continue to monitor member participation in these events to determine whether they will be included in the schedule next year. If you plan to participate, reg-ister as early as possible to ensure your ride reservation. Dates will be verified as the year progresses.

You are welcome and encouraged to participate in benefit rides whether or not they appear in the SBH club Ride Sched-ule.

A P R I LRiding With Our Club

GENERAL INFORMATION AND POLICIESNon-members are invited to attend rides and meetings to get a feel for the club, without obligation.

A sign-in roster is available at the start of each ride. All riders must sign the roster to be regarded as a participant.

Riders under age 18 may participate on rides if they are accom-panied by a parent or other responsible adult.

Helmets are required on all Bike Hiker club rides.

If a rider has to leave a ride for any reason, the ride leader must be informed.

RIDER FITNESSAll new riders to the club whether guest, member, novice, beginner, or occasional rider are expected to be healthy and fit enough to complete any club ride at the posted pace, grade and distance. All club guidelines and literature are based on this core expectation.

Every effort will be made not to leave a rider behind. However, riders that begin the ride, but demonstrate an inability to com-plete the ride as posted, may be turned back by the ride leader.

RIDE GRADING CODETHREE FACTORS make up the ease or difficulty of a ride – not counting such chance factors as traffic, road conditions, and weather. These factors are important considerations for riders when selecting rides in which to participate. However, riders should NOT sign up for rides beyond their ability. Many of our rides are 30+ miles at a pace of about 12 mph to 20+ mph. “Bit-ing off more than you can chew” can result in discouragement or sore muscles, and invites accidents.

• Terrain Elevation - Represented by an alpha letterA - Steep - Mostly steep grades: strong riders onlyB - Steep/Moderate - Some relief from steep gradesC - Moderate - Hilly; a challenge for the average riderD - Moderate/Easy - Rolling hills, a challenge for beginnersE - Easy - Some gentle grades, but no problemsF - Flat - As if any route is really flat

• Distance - Represented by the actual number of miles• Pace - Will range in speed between about 12 mph to 20+

mph. Riders tend to increase their pace as they gain expe-rience, fitness, and are challenged by difficulty. Beginners and novices are strongly advised to select easy and short distance rides to start with, and progress up the grading scale with experience and capability. IMPORTANT ITEMS TO BRING ON A RIDE!

REQUIRED: Spare Tube Or Tubular Tire, Patch Kit, Pump, Lights/Re-flectors For Night Ride, Helmet

RECOMMENDED: Basic Tools, First Aid Kit, Filled Water Bottle, Snack, Money, Identification

We can get caught in the rain, but we don’t purposely start out in it. Poor visibility and slick roads make riding dangerous. And nobody likes cleaning up a messy bike. If in doubt about a cancellation of a ride because of rain, call the ride leader

From the 1993 issues of the Leaky Valve (the 25th anniversary of the Sacramento BikeHikers) we find news of the first Party Pardee Century. Early registration was $14.00 and day of event was $20.00. The club collected $2,722.00 in income from the event and had expenses of $1,268.24—a nice profit for a new century that was scheduled for a best outcome of breaking even. In fact, at the end of the second quarter of 1993, after Pardee, the club had a net income of just over $800.00. The club was still sponsoring the El Dorado Century in 1993. The club was getting ready to celebrate 25 years of bicycling, and the banquet was priced at $12.50.

Mas Hatano was the high mileage leader in 1993 with 4,340 miles, which means that Mas rode every mile of every ride the club of-fered that year.

Larry Robinson was selling tires (at the Pink Dog) that he guar-anteed would prevent flats. In fact, Larry went even so far as to promise that they “will never go flat.”

Those were the days!

Bike Trail to be replaced with a tube!

In the 1997 sister publication the Broken Valve, it was reported that The American River Parkway Commission is “expected to publicly announce on April 1 the proposed replacement of the bike trail system with a network of unfloodable bicycle tubes on the river

corridors of Sacramento. “

“The tubes, designed by internationally renowned architect ‘I. M. Paid’, will be constructed of giant clear plastic tubes replacing the bike trails along the American and Sacramento rivers. The trails will

be watertight and therefore will float when the rivers overflow their banks. This will solve the problems of trail maintenance and repairs due to washouts

during heavy floods. “

The tubes would have heating and air conditioning, be 14-feet wide to accommodate the panniers of touring cyclists, have access tubes to all major crossings, and be expandable!

SBH President Jerry ‘Legal Eagle’ Braunstein said, “This thing looks like the Habitrail housing I kept my pet gerbil in when I was a kid.” Also, because the labor to build this sysem would be donated, SBH officers proposed that it be called ‘Habitrail for Humanity.’ SBH VP Rubin ‘Beater Bike’ Salinas was so awed by the idea he could only say, ‘’Totally tubular, man!”

If you believe this, consider yourself an April Fool C [Ed.: rained-out rides = too much spare time!]

A Sampling of Sacramento Bike Hikers History by Gary Noland

This is our club’s 50th year anniversary and I thought it would be interesting to share some of the facts and events of the past. To that end I have been reviewing old Sacramento Bike Hikers Ride Schedules, Leaky Valves and even an issue of the Broken Valve.

Bike Hikers Meetup GroupAt the May 2016 club meeting it was decided to create a Meetup.com group to let potential members know about our wonderful club’s activities, and to diversify our membership so as to be able to offer a wider range of rides. What is Meetup.com? An on-line organization of over 26 million members in 250,000 groups. It was created to make it easier for people to connect with others in their community. How is it working? As of now, there are almost 1,000  members in our Meetup.com group, including many current Bike Hiker Club members. Evaluation of the group shows that up to 20% of our new members come from the Meetup Group! Impact on ride attendance and the club in general is still being reviewed. Assistant Organizers: Thanks again to the club members who previously entered rides into the site: Dave Abbott, Phil Agur, Becky Neal, Dennis Nolan, Linda Noland, Kathy Wright, and Ed Sclare. How do I Join? The quickest way to explore and join our Meetup.com group is to enter the exact URL into your browser window: http://www.meetup.com/Sacramento-Bike-Hikers/ Give it a try! Please contact Jerry Beckett, the Organizer, with any comments or questions about this group: (916) 214-3203 or [email protected]

Make Hill Climbing EasierDuring this cycling season, you may want to tackle some event rides and others with significant climbing challenges. Okay, it will certainly help if you’ve been participating in the club’s Hill Climbing Series or doing other climbing to improve your physical ability and mental readiness. However, an additional step is to improve your machine by installing lower gearing, which will help you spin up hills easier and relieve pressure on your knees! This change is relatively easy to make on drivetrains up through 9-speed Shimano—install a bigger-cogged cassette, a mountain bike derailleur, and longer chain and you are good to go!

However, not only are contemporary 10/11 speed road bikes with compact doubles less friendly to the aging or beginning cyclist to begin with, but lowering their gearing is trickier because of incompatible road and mountain bike components. Nonetheless, improvements can be made. For example, I recently outfitted my wife Peggy’s new 11-speed Trek Domane with an 11-36 cassette to significantly lower its gearing. (She is delighted, and we hear comments like “that is a dinner-plate!”) Telling how I did it is too lengthy for this space, but If you want more information let me know. Meanwhile, here is a link to a website which provides instructions for modifying many combinations of drivetrain systems (except Campagnolo which offers unique challenges):

“No Sweep” rides designated by this symbol tell potential riders that they need to be self-suffi-cient. No one will be following behind to look out for them should they need assistance. It tells

them that they shouldn’t consider this ride unless they would probably do it on their own or with a friend. Basically it’s a ride for experienced riders. However, ride leaders are encouraged to arrange regroup points on the route to allow riders to stay together. Riders on “No Sweep” riders are encouraged to ride together and check with stopped riders to see if they need assistance. Ride leaders will still check to make sure everyone returns safely.
