Legislative: Brian   Greetings, mem-bers and friends, We're still waiting

to see what happens with HB2860, our bill that would allow us to proceed with cau-tion through a stoplight that fails to recognize a motorcycle. It's been sent to the Gov. He has 60 days to sign it, veto it or let it become law automati-cally. The ISP has agreed to stop conducting motorcycle-only roadblocks-- not due to a change in the law, but as a re-sult of a meeting between our

lobbyist, our state Legislative Coordinator, House legislative staff and representatives of the State Police. Counties and mu-nicipalities can still conduct them. If you do happen to get stopped at a motorcycle road-block, be polite, but note the lo-cation, the time of day, and the officer's badge number; contact a Chapter officer, and we will fol-low this up with ABATE's legal department. HR412, the "Kids Just Want to Ride" act, or the so-called "lead ban repeal," has 70 cosponsors, including Reps. Biggert and Kinzinger. In June, the chief s p o n s o r

of this bill got language in-serted into the House Financial Services and Government Ap-propriations bill that would prohibit the CPSC from using federal funds to implement the lead-ban for kids' off-road ve-hicles, but a permanent change in the law is still what's needed. The House Energy and Com-merce Committee, of which Rep. Kinzinger is a member, is also considering HR1939, which has similar language, but doesn't go as far as HR412. The Senate is also considering a bill with virtually the same language as HR412--it's Senate Amendment 214. We should

call Sen. Durbin @(202)-224-2154 and Sen. Kirk @(202)-224-2854 and ask them to cosponsor this bill. We had a special guest at the July meeting--11th District Congress-man (and new WillCo member) Adam Kinzinger spoke about his support of "Kids Just Want to Ride" and used it as an example of needless government interfer-ence and misguided over-protection. He used an analogy I liked--bikers are like people were back in the Old West; we don't want anyone to interfere with us or restrict us--we just want to be able to blaze our own trail. He

told me after the meeting he really likes ABATE as an or-ganization. Other states and counties are enacting motorcycle noise leg-islation. I'll have specifics and updates next month, but if any-one is traveling to Maine or New Hampshire, be careful! Legislative redistricting means virtually all of us will be in vastly different state and fed-eral districts. Many of the state senators and representatives and congressmen we've worked with and gotten to know will no longer be "our" legislators, and we'll have to establish personal relationships with new ones. In many cases, the new legislators in our dis-tricts already have worked with ABATE on bills, but many of them will face tough battles to get re-elected. In some dis-tricts, the new legislators are decidedly NOT motorcycle

friendly, and we'll most likely be supporting one of their opponents in the 2012 elections. Our friends will need help, and that's where we come in. We can put campaign signs together and "plant" them; we can work phone banks and pass out literature; ABATE PAC and FedPAC can buy tickets to their fundraisers and our members can attend them on the PAC's dime--the food's usually good, and the candidates and their staffers can see first hand that we're political activists. It's up to every one of us to get involved and help to shape the future of motorcycling, be-cause many in our government en-vision a vastly different future for us than we do! Ride safe and enjoy summer, Brian, Legislative Curmudgeon "Life consists not in holding good cards, but in playing those you hold well."--Josh Billings

Safety & Ed:  Monty   Boys & Girls, the time has come for Monty to retire. I am not going to be running this year

for the Safety & Ed position. I have enjoyed my time in this position, but I am changing jobs and taking over as Chairman of the Board of the Plain-field Area Chamber of Commerce and my time is at a premium. I have not been able to spend the amount of time necessary needed for Safety & Ed Coordinator, as can be seen by my lack of articles. I am still very passion-ate about Safety & Ed and will still be

very involved. Thank you to everyone that has helped me in this position. Special thanks to Freak, Maria MJ Vi , Allison, Tony, Michael& Paul. I will still be teaching at Plainfield North and Plainfield East High Schools. When we have a new Safety & Ed coordinator, please step up and help them out if asked. This is a program that we need to keep running well. Be safe and ride safe. Monty

Page 10 Membership ‐ Helen Well it has been an unusual spring and summer but at least people are getting out now that some of the rains have stopped. I will be trying to send out monthly renewal notices to eve-ryone that has not already re-newed. The top of the applica-tion form will say “CHAPTER RENEWAL NOTICE”. These are ok to use, they will be mailed directly to our WillCo PO Box.

If you get one that just says “RENEWAL NOTICE” this is com-ing from the State Office and this is the one that we do not get the $3.00 for our chapter. Please try to avoid using the State renewal envelopes. If you don’t get one and you call me I will send you one.

Be Safe and enjoy the rest of the summer. Hope to see you all at the next meeting.
