ARIES (March 21-April 19): Two heads are better than one. If there is something to work on or someplace to go, be sure to take along a friend or a special someone. You will achieve twice as much with a partner this week.TAURUS (April 20-May 20): People may offer you insincere assurances or promises they have no intention of keeping during the early part of the week, but those close to your heart won’t let you down if you need a helping hand.GEMINI (May 21-June 20): For the best results, exert additional effort and make key decisions in the first half of the week. You might not use the best judgment and may rely on luck, but the truth is you are luckier than usual.CANCER (June 21-July 22): As a person born with the sun in Cancer, you are frequently sensitive to the lunar cycles. This week’s new moon in Pisces might ignite a desire for study or travel that shifts your focus for several weeks.LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Maintain momentum. You should be able to coast along during the first half of the week. If someone asks for a favor, be wise and grant it, but don’t become greedy and ask for any for yourself.VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Crazy cat ladies dine with dotty dog people. You may be thrown into contact with people who possess endearing foibles in the upcoming week. Maintain a respect for those with different lifestyles.LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Don’t lose them at the first hello. In the week to come use your powers of attractiveness and charm to make people stand up and take notice. Crucial meetings should be scheduled early in the week.SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): When one door closes another one is sure to spring open. In the week ahead, rather than letting yourself become depressed about what has been lost, remember to rejoice in whatever has been found.SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Please some of the people, not all of the people. Because of boundless optimism, you may bite off more than you can chew and regret it later this week. Wise planning is the key to success.CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Stress free is the way to be. In the week to come, find ways to relax through meditation or a quiet walk. Don’t complicate a situation by overreacting if and when things don’t go your way.AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Extravagance in thought and deed may be just what you need. During the upcoming week, people may urge you on, and drown out your hesitations just when assurance is needed the most.PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): When you are standing at the corner of love and infatuation, you must remember that whichever street you take may involve lasting responsibilities. In the week ahead, you must honor your commitments.

Automobile manufacturers working to reduce unnecessary engine idling

(NC)—Did you know that if every driver of a light-duty vehicle in Canada decreased their vehicle idling by three minutes a day, we would collectively save more than 500 million litres of fuel and more than $500 million annually in fuel costs? Not only that, we would prevent more than one billion tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions from entering the atmosphere each year.

Automobile manufacturers have come up with a way to help drivers reduce fuel use and prevent unnecessary engine idling. Idle start-stop systems are a proven technology that has been successfully deployed over the past ten years in hybrid vehicles. Manufacturers have also begun to make these technologies available in conventional vehicles sold in Canada.

Idle start-stop systems reduce fuel consumption and

exhaust emissions by turning off the engine when the vehicle is stopped and during deceleration at low vehicle speeds. The system automatically restarts the engine when the driver hits the accelerator. In hybrids, when the car comes to a stop, the engine computer cuts the spark and the fuel. When the foot is lifted off the brake, the engine fires back up.

Idle stop systems offer significant benefits in urban driving where stop-and-go traffic is frequent, and can reduce urban fuel consumption by four to 10 per cent depending on the technology used and specific driving conditions.

The technology is designed to provide seamless operation so that drivers are not inconvenienced while driving.

Greater fuel-efficiency on the roads is achieved by consumers who make informed choices when purchasing, maintaining and driving their vehicle. More information on fuel consumption, purchasing fuel-efficient vehicles, and fuel-saving driving behaviours is available online at www.vehicles.gc.ca

• The tradition of a St. Patrick’s Day paradebegan in America, not Ireland. New York City washome to thefirst parade, heldonMarch17,1762. Irishsoldiersserving in theBritisharmy organized the celebration to honor the Catholic feast day of Ireland’s patron saint. Today, New York’s parade is the largest in the world with more than 200,000 marchers along the Fifth Avenue route. •Haveyoueverheardofthetrifolium dubium? That’s the name given to the shamrock by botanists. The early Celts referred to the shamrock as the seamroy, and considered this three-leafed clover a sacred plant with mystical properties. Legend has it that St. Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to first-century Irish pagans. During the 17thcentury when the English began seizing Irish land and prohibiting the use of their native language and Catholic religion, many Irish started wearing the shamrock as a symbol of pride in their heritage.

10 Immune Boosting Tips1. Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Good sources include carrots, beetroot, sweet potatoes, garlic, onions, sprouts, tomatoes and broccoli plus watermelon, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries. Eat what you can raw, and lightly steam the rest.

2. Ensure your diet is high in good quality protein such as organic chicken, wild fish, quinoa, organic free range eggs, legumes or organic tofu. The body needs more protein when it is under attack.

3. Eat essential fats in the form of oily fish such as salmon, trout and tuna (The brand Raincoast is free from heavy metals). Try raw nuts and seeds as a snack as these fats are essential for boosting immune function. Use organic coconut oil for cooking.

4. Consume whole grains in the diet such as brown rice, steel-cut oats, buckwheat, quinoa and millet.

5. Eat freshly made soups loaded with veggies, garlic and onions. They are easy to digest and contain an abundance of nutrients and immune boosters

English word “leprechaun.” These little imps date back to the early Celtic beliefs in fairies, those tiny men and women with magical powers, who used those powers for either good or evil. Leprechauns were seen as grumpy little men, whose duties were to mend the shoes of the other fairies. We’ve all heard of the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Folklore claims that the little men have great treasures stored in crocks, and use trickery to protect it from others. If a leprechaun is captured by a human, he has the magical power to grant three wishes in exchange for his release. In 1959, Walt Disney StudiosreleasedthefilmDarby O’Gill and the Little People, which gave us the image of cheerful and friendly leprechauns, but in Irish folklore, they are cantankerous and mischievous.

over as head coach and his record of the highest winning percentage (.881) in football history, either college or professional, still stands. Notre Dame has produced the second largest number of players drafted into the NFL, the greatest number of Heisman Trophy winners, and ten former Irish have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Every home game has been sold out since 1966, with the exception of one Thanksgiving Day contest against theAir Force in 1973,when thestudents had gone home for the holiday.

Eric is a very different kinda guy. His tail is constantly wagging like a dog. Eric can be moody, but he also longs for attention and will follow you around the pen and look at you hopefully. In fact, as soon as he realizes he’s got your attention, he will saunter over for some cuddles. Eric does a lot of sauntering, in fact he saunters all over the place. We are pretty sure Eric only stops sauntering to sleep. Although Eric doesn’t seem to get along well with most of the cats in his room, he does have one special buddy who he spends most of his time with. Eric is a diabetic and will be adopted out on a permanent foster basis. You get an odd fellow to keep you entertained

and we pay for his medical costs. Eric just needs someone to take a chance on him.

Nicole was trapped as a stray but could not be released to a feral colony, as she is deaf and white -

not a recipe for survival. She is an energetic young cat and has learned to trust people and enjoy attention. She had been adopted, but the long-time resident cat did not want a playful young companion. When Nicole was in their home, they used flicking the lights on and off to let her know they were in a room. She also appreciates tapping gently on the floor or wall if you are near - otherwise she can startle when you touch her or appear suddenly. Nicole not only tolerates, but enjoys being petted and will close her eyes and lean into your hand as you stroke her. Nicole has become our poster gal because she is just so amazingly stunning.

Q: My 7-year-old Dachshund-mix licks at everything - her furniture, her bed, and she even licks leaves during walks. I believe poor Goldie was kept in a crate for many hours as a puppy. Do you have any insights on her behavior? - J.A.C., Orlando, FLA: Dr. Ilana Reisner, a veterinary behaviorist in Philadelphia, PA, explains that persistent licking can be coined a “displacement behavior,” sort of letting off steam, as an outlet for anxiety, much as nail biting can be for people. However, since your dog seems so intent, more might be going on.” One determination of seriousness is to assess if your dog can easily be distracted from licking and redircted to another behavior, such as coming when you call her. Lots of folks might jump to the idea that Goldie has a compulsive disorder, and certainly that possibility exists. However, Reisner says to first rule out a medical explanation (which most likely explains the licking), particularly a possible gastro-intestinal issue, or even chronic tonsillitis. Scoping with biopsies will rule out the stomach issue and visually looking at throat will rule out the other. Crazy as it sounds, a food allergy is also possible. Reisner suggests you keep a log to determine what Goldie licks and when to determine if there’s any pattern. This information might help a veterinarian. Meanwhile, you can do no harm to enhance your dog’s enrichment. Feed Goldie from various Kong or food dispensing toys. You might even stuff food inside toys and then hide them around the house, so she can sniff them out. Also, take Goldie for daily walks on-leash, not only for exercise but also to sniff what’s new in the ‘hood. A compulsive behavior is a diagnosis of exclusion, meaning that after everything else is ruled out, it is considered. If this ends up being the diagnosis, a psycho-pharmaceutical might help, as can a referral to a veterinary behaviorist.

“LIFE OF PI’’: Director Ang Lee’s stunningly visual version of the Yann Martel novel earned him a recent Oscar nomination for the film, which also was in the best picture race. A young man (played in his teen years by Suraj Sharma) and a Bengal tiger become wary lifeboat mates after a shipwreck, then develop into partners in survival as their unique adventure evolves. Gerard Depardieu and Rafe Spall also appear, but Sharma, Lee and the visual-effects team clearly own the film. ***

“HITCHCOCK’’: Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren are typically credible as legendary “master of suspense’’ Alfred Hitchcock and

his wife, Alma, in director Sacha Gervasi’s docudrama, but the bigger interest is the movie’s detailing of the complications - financial and emotional - the famed filmmaker ran into while making his classic “Psycho.’’ Scarlett Johansson plays actress Janet Leigh, she of the shower scene. Jessica Biel appears as “Psycho’’ co-star Vera Miles, with Michael Wincott as killer Ed Gein, whom Hitchcock envisions himself engaging in conversation. ***

“RISE OF THE GUARDIANS’’: The title guardians are some of the most famous characters ever, who band together to save the world’s children from an overdose of fear aimed by the so-called Bogeyman (voice by Jude Law), in this enjoyable fantasy. Santa Claus, Jack Frost, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy - respectively voiced by Alec Baldwin, Chris Pine, Hugh Jackman and Isla Fisher (“Wedding Crashers’’) - try to prevent the intended fright from taking hold. ***

“SMASHED’’: A young couple, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Emmy winner Aaron Paul (“Breaking Bad’’), struggle to get a handle on their drinking in this well-played drama honored at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. The wife has an especially hard time making the journey toward sobriety, which forces her to come to terms with personal and professional dilemmas. The impressive cast also includes Oscar winner Octavia Spencer (“The Help’’), Mary Kay Place, and spouses Megan Mullally (“Will & Grace’’) and Nick Offerman (“Parks and Recreation’’). DVD extras: “making-of ’’ documentary; audio commentary by Winstead and director and co-writer James Ponsoldt; deleted scenes; Toronto Film Festival footage. ***

“THIS MUST BE THE PLACE’’: It didn’t get as much theatrical distribution as most of his films, but Sean Penn remains a singular acting force in this unusual mix of personal drama and revenge tale. The star plays a retired rock music legend who decides to patch things up with his father, but after traveling from Ireland to New York on that mission, he finds his dad has died ... before completing his targeting of a former Nazi war criminal, which the son then takes up. Frances McDormand, Judd Hirsch, Eve Hewson (daughter of U2’s Bono) and music icon David Byrne also star for director Paolo Sorrentino. ***

SHORT STUFFThis week there’s no shortage of short things! Take a look at a number of items containing the word “short.” • Randy Newman’s 1977 Billboard top hit “Short People”

described his subject, “They got little baby legs that stand so low, you got to pick ‘em up just to say hello.” Who is classified as a short person? The term “short stature” refers to any person substantially under the average height for a person of the same age and gender. Pediatricians use a measurement called standard deviation that compares the height of different children. A child’s height must be more than two SD’s below average height in order to have short stature, and 95% percent of comparable children are taller.

• A short sale on the stock exchange means that the seller does not actually own the shares he/she is selling and has to borrow them before being able to deliver. When the share price falls, the short seller buys them and returns them to the lender, resulting in a gain on the deal.

• If someone calls you short, he/she might be referring to your height, but could be telling you that your demeanor is abrupt, discourteous, or unfriendly. A short presentation doesn’t always refer to its duration. It might mean it was succinct and concise.

• Look at all the idioms in the English language that contain the word “short.” You can make short work of something by finishing it quickly. You might run short (not have enough), fall short (fail to measure up to a certain standard), or cut short (interrupt someone). If you’ve submitted your resume for a job, you might be on the short list, one that contains those narrowed down from the full pool of applicants. Hopefully, on that resume, you didn’t sell yourself short, that is, didn’t give yourself full credit where it was deserved. You certainly wouldn’t want to get the short end of the stick, which might mean unfair treatment or not getting what you are worthy of.

• If you want to retain information in your short-term memory, it will be necessary for you to repeat it out loud or mentally rehash it from time to time. By doing so, the data re-enters the memory’s storage, enabling it to be preserved for a longer period.
