The bad news of the day is thatTom Anderson, as spokesman for thelocal independent service stationoperators, has just announced thathis association members are goingto close their stations for 7 or 8days. The good news is, that we willhave all that gas available whenthey reopen. If you believe that, then you need a refresher course ineconomics. To wit, the price ofgasoline is "controlled" by theU.S. Government, and a phase-inperiod has been announced whereby these controls will be graduallylifted, until in 1981 the price willbe set by the market. Now commonsense tells us that gradual decontrol persuades everybody thatprices will be higher tomorrow, soeveryone concerned, from oil company to service station to theindividual motorist, acts to makewhatever shortage there mightactually be, worse, by topping offhis supply.
July
1979
I feel that our only hope for anadequate supply is for the government to follow the advice of Nobelprizewinner Milton Friedman asoffered in Newsweek, to scrap pricecontrols immediately, which actionwould cause the oil shortage todisappear "tomorrow."
Now surely, you say. PresidentCarter and his top economic advisorsrealize this, so Carter's upcomingenergy message will contain therecommendation that these controlsbe lifted immediately. Well, wewill see; in the meantime does anyonewant to buy a new Chrysler LeBaron,or Ford LTD, or even a Fiesta?Without gas, no matter how good adeal you can secure right now, anautomobile is as useful as yourappendix.

THE OPEN ROAD...IT STILLBECKONS.
Hit the RoadPorche,AudlOP VolhswageoRememtsef the way it used to be?You'd buy a car because you really loved todrive. Your machine trad a little better performance than your neighbor's car. It was a pleasure tohit the throttle and get moving. And Handle? Howoften did you take that back-road turn a wee bit fasterthan normal just to feel the response as you cranked thesteering wheel over hard left? Yes, those were the days. And those still ARE the days!If you're tired of dragging that gas guzzler down the highway, come into Holbert's and test drive a Volkswagen. Porsche or Audi.We think you'll be pleasantly surprised to find performance, fueleconomy and creature comfort all wrapped into our superbly engineered motor cars.
THE OPEN ROAD ... IT STILL BECKONS.And at Holbert's . . . We'll put some fun back into your driving.
