Born in July, 1934, Father Raniero Cantalamessa is turning 80, but continues to travel around the world to preach the Word of God, listened to and appreciated in all continents. In this book, an interview, Father Cantalamessa unravels, thanks to the questions of a top class reporter like Aldo Maria Valli, the story of his life, interwoven with the thread of the call to be «the carrier of living water». In Father Cantalamessa’s biography we also find an extraordinary and intense period in the history of the Church, characterized by the «turning point» impressed by the Second Vatican Council, in which the Capuchin took part as a protagonist with his ecumenical sensitivity, his attention to the signs of the Spirit and the service of the Word.

Raniero Cantalamessaa Franciscan Capuchin, was born near Ascoli Piceno. He graduated in theology and classical literature, worked formerly as a Professor of the History of Christian Origins at the Catholic University of Milan and was a member of the International Theological Commission until 1981. In 1979 he left the academic world to devote himself entirely to preaching in various countries of world, with a strong ecumenical sensitivity. Since 1980 ha has been the Preacher of the Papal Household.

Padre Raniero Cantalamessa, francesca-no cappuccino, è originario della provincia di Ascoli Piceno. Laureato in Teologia e in Lettere classiche, già professore ordina-rio di Storia delle origini cristiane presso l’Università Cattolica di Milano, membro della Commissione Teologica Internaziona-le fino al 1981, nel 1979 ha lasciato l’inse-gnamento accademico per dedicarsi inte-ramente alla predicazione in varie nazioni del mondo, con spiccata sensibilità ecu-menica. Dal 1980 è Predicatore della Casa Pontificia. Con Àncora ha pubblicato molti libri di successo, tradotti in tutto il mondo.

aldo maria Valli è vaticanista al Tg1, dopo esserlo stato a lungo al Tg3. Collabora con diverse riviste e ha scritto numerosi libri, alcuni dei quali editi da Àncora, specie sul Vaticano e sui pontificati di Giovanni Pao-lo II, Benedetto XVI e Francesco.

Nato nel luglio 1934, padre Raniero Cantalamessa è giunto alla soglia fati-dica degli «ottanta», ma non cessa di girare per il mondo a predicare la Pa-rola di Dio, ascoltato e apprezzato in tutti i continenti.In questo libro-intervista padre Canta-lamessa dipana, grazie alle domande di un cronista di razza come Aldo Ma-ria Valli, il racconto della sua vita, in-tessuto con il filo rosso della chiamata a essere «il portatore dell’acqua viva».Nella vicenda biografica di padre Cantalamessa rileggiamo un periodo intenso e straordinario nella storia del-la Chiesa, caratterizzato dalla «svol-ta» impressa dal Concilio Vaticano II, di cui il religioso cappuccino è sta-to protagonista con la sua sensibilità ecumenica, l’attenzione ai segni dello Spirito e il servizio della Parola. Noto volto televisivo, grazie a molti anni di presenza sul piccolo schermo come commentatore delle letture do-menicali, padre Cantalamessa ricopre dal 1980 l’incarico di “predicatore dal Papa”, svolto sotto tre pontificati, da Giovanni Paolo II a Benedetto XVI a Francesco, di cui padre Raniero dice: «Una cosa è certa: qualunque sarà la durata del suo papato, non sarà faci-le tornare indietro. E io aggiungo: per fortuna!».

Al vederci, tutti raddrizzavano le loro schiene, si asciugavano il sudore della fronte e tracannavano d’un fiato intere caraffe d’acqua. Diego Faresis an Argentine Jesuit with a degree in Philosophy and Metaphysics. He teaches at the Universidad del Salvador of the Company of Jesus and the Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina. He has been working for about twenty years with a team of over a hundred lays at the House of St. Joseph (El Hogar de San José), a center for adults who are homeless or live in conditions of extreme poverty. Along with the Jesuit Father Ángel Rossi, Father Diego is also managing the House of Kindness (Casa de la Bondad), a hospice for the terminally ill people. He was accepted into the Company of Jesus by the then-Provincial of the Jesuits in Argentina, Jorge Bergoglio, as a pre-novice in September 1975 and then as a novice on the 21st of February 1976. Bergoglio was also the godfather to his priestly ordination and then became his spiritual director.

Un amico e discepolo di Jorge Bergo-glio descrive in questo breve ma denso saggio il «segreto» di papa Francesco, chiamato come Vescovo di Roma dalla «fine del mondo» il 13 marzo 2013. Padre Diego Fares, gesuita argentino, è laureato in Filosofia e insegna Metafisica presso la Universidad del Salvador della Compagnia di Gesù e la Pontificia Universi-dad Católica Argentina. We do not always find in the Bible the immediate answer to our questions. But we always find the right way to address them.

Bruno Maggioniis a priest of the diocese of Como. He studied theology and biblical science at the Pontifical Gregorian University and Biblical Institute in Rome and he taught at the Catholic University of Milan. Maggioni is the editor of «La rivista del clero italiano» and with Àncora he has published various essays on exegesis and biblical theology.

Bruno Maggioni, presbitero della dio-cesi di Como, ha studiato Teologia e Scienze bibliche alla Pontificia Univer-sità Gregoriana e al Pontificio Istituto Biblico di Roma. L’originalità bi-blica sta allora nel “come” e nel “per-ché”. La preghiera biblica, prima che un parlare a Dio, è un ascolto della sua Parola. La Bibbia è ricca anche di uomini che si pongono “davanti al loro Dio” e con lui parlano, rifletto-no, discutono. Nelle pagine bibliche troviamo le nostre domande poste con una forza e una lucidità che da soli non sapremmo raggiungere. Non sempre troviamo nella Bibbia l’im-mediata risposta alle nostre doman-de. «The style is the man himself»: this assertion of a thinker of the Eighteenth century leads us to the heart of the careful and often surprising reading of the Gospel of Luke by Father Fausti. Before our eyes emerges the portrait of a Jesus who, in his style, reflects the «foolish» love of God, «a thousand miles away from our own imaginations». And the disciple is called to the most demanding challenge: to pattern his/her way of thinking and acting after that of the Master, since the style is as important as the contents of the message. Because you cannot communicate the good news – much less the good news that is the Gospel – through a miscommunication, «you cannot announce peace, meekness, reconciliation, mercy with an arrogant and pretentious style» (Enzo Bianchi).

Silvano Faustiis a Jesuit and has lived for thirty years at Villapizzone, on a farm in the outskirts of Milan, in a community of Jesuits who are devoted to the service of the Word and are part of a larger community of families concerned with social outcasts. He has published several biblical theological works, both on a scientific and popular level.

Silvano Fausti, gesuita, pur lavo-rando part time in vari continenti, da trent’anni risiede in una cascina alla periferia di Milano (Villapiz-zone), con una comunità di gesuiti dediti al servizio della Parola e inse-rita in una comunità più ampia di famiglie aperte ai problemi dell’e-marginazione. È autore di numero-se pubblicazioni biblico-teologiche, sia di studio sia di divulgazione.

«Lo stile è l’uomo stesso». Que-sta affermazione di un pensa-tore del Settecento ci conduce al cuore della rilettura attenta (e spesso sorprendente) che pa-dre Fausti fa del Vangelo di Lu-ca. Sotto i nostri occhi vediamo disegnarsi il ritratto di un Ge-sù che nel suo stile rispecchia l’amore «insensato» di un Dio «mille miglia lontano dalle no-stre immaginazioni». E il disce-polo è chiamato alla sfida più esigente: modellare il suo modo di pensare e agire su quello del Maestro, perché lo stile è tanto importante quanto il contenu-to del messaggio. Perché non si può comunicare una buona no-tizia – tanto meno la buona no-tizia che è il vangelo – attraver-so una cattiva comunicazione, «non si possono annunciare la pace, la mitezza, la riconciliazio-ne, la misericordia con uno stile arrogante e pretenzioso» (Enzo Bianchi).

Davide Caldirolawas born in 1963 and has been a parish priest in Milan since 1987. At present he is the parson of two parishes assembled in the «Pastoral Community» in Milan. He organizes spiritual retreats and spiritual exercises for priests, as well as groups of listening of the Word for young people. He collaborates with the missionaries of the P.I.M.E. and the secular institute of the «Little Apostless of Charity» of Father Luigi Monza. He has published several works of biblical meditations.

La storia degli Atti degli apostoli racconta di gente che cammina a fatica, che riceve colpi e ferite, ma con la grazia dello Spirito «mette ali». Vogliamo accostarci a queste pagine per ritrovare entusiasmo e freschezza nella nostra vita di cre-denti. Esse ci offrono l’immagine vi-va della prima comunità cristiana, ci mettono a confronto con la grazia e la fatica degli inizi, ci ricollocano con fiducia nel solco di un’azione dello Spirito che precede, accompa-gna e supera i nostri poveri sforzi. Le vogliamo rileggere con questa intenzione profonda: riprendere il cammino, ritrovare il coraggio, met-tere ali.

DAVIDE CALDIROLA è nato nel 1963. È prete della diocesi di Milano dal 1987. Attualmente è parroco di due parroc-chie riunite in «Comunità pastorale» nella città di Milano. Accompagna gior-nate di ritiro e corsi di esercizi spirituali per sacerdoti e cammini di ascolto della Parola per i giovani. Collabora con i mis-sionari del Pime e con l’istituto secolare delle «Piccole Apostole della Carità» di don Luigi Monza; ha pubblicato diversi testi di meditazioni bibliche.

Inspired by course of spiritual exercises that involved a dozen young people, this book is not a guide to the Holy Land, but a spiritual itinerary that is nourished by the light, the colours, the sounds of that land. For this reason, it will have a dual purpose: it can become a tool to prepare for or to make an intense experience of a real pilgrimage; or, more simply, it will be the way to make a spiritual journey through a daily exercise of personal meditation with the help of the words. Each meditation ends with a reference to the experience of Charles de Foucauld, who was able to grasp the depths of the mystery of the «hidden life» of Jesus in Palestine more than anyone else.
