Trees provide many bene-
fits to the environment, the
economy and people. For
trees to provide those bene-
fits they must be healthy.
An important component in managing
trees is to have the right tree properly located
on a site. The key is to select the right tree spe-
cies (and cultivar) that will meet the planting
objects, and at the same time allows the tree to
grow to its full potential on the designated site.
As new research accumulates expound-
ing the benefits of urban trees, we see more
options in tree choices and planting configura-
tions to maximize best management practices
in tree care. These two converging concepts
provide more strategies to achieve the objec-
tives of tree care and resulting benefits.
By planting the right tree in the right
place the benefits that may result include re-
duction in heating & cooling costs, reduced
urban heat island effects, stormwater manage-
ment, fire-resistant landscapes, pollution
mitigitation, and an increase in health and well
-being.
