Mediation in the Development of Novels in Sabah (2019)This book traces the chronology of Sabah’s novels that have a unique history. The developmental history of Sabah’s novel is not just a reflection of the literary history itself. Contextual factors that affecting the background of society and authors, institutions and readers shape the formation and development of the novels in the state. These are known as mediators or environmental (social) factors. This environmental factors that are fundamental to the production of a novel is also linked to the shape and thought of the work (art) produced by the author itself. Therefore, this book is an integrated study that offers a dual (social and artistic) study between the context of novel development and the internal form of the text.

Sabah in Malaysia-Indonesia Relations (2019)Sabah in the Malaysia-Indonesia Relations debates on the Malaysia-Indonesia relations that are shaped by the diversity of factors such as ‘brother-sister’ type of relations that were established long before the colonial arrived in the region. Thus, the book was created to see the uniqueness of these two neighbours of this region. Focusing on Sabah, this book offers a unique and interesting study to explore because the relationship of these marginal regions cannot be explained by looking at the macro-level relationship. Although there are some conflicts and problems that hinder the relations between the two countries, especially in Sabah, these issues are only part of the narrative in the relations between the two countries. These conflicts and issues should not be overlooked as many other issues can lead to a better in understanding the relations between the two countries.

Murut Motifs and Designs Heritage (2019)Custom, culture and habits that were once practised by the Murut clan are highly valuable heritage assets. The demonstration of Murut motifs are closely linked with their everyday lifestyle. Life that is dependent on natural resources and located within the vicinity of the highlands makes the Murut clan innovative and skilled in producing creations that are intended for the needs of their daily life. This can be seen in the designs on the surface of weavings, body decorations, carvings, hunting signs as well as the decorative styles in attires; all these represent features that are characterized by nature has extremely valuable philosophies. Apart from the purpose of daily use, these motifs are displayed in custom and cultural ceremonies to show their importance in the scope of the life of this community. This book not only record and document motifs that are the breaths of life of this community, but it also functions as an identification tool and an iconology that highlight the unique culture of the Murut clan. Paradoxically, these motifs are beginning to lapse in the memory of the younger generation and the efforts of the author in gathering and recording data for over 10 years, is timely. This book is appropriate as the main reference for students and researchers interested in continuing the study of this community in the future.

This book presents a quantitative result from the elemental Inductively Coupled Plasma – Optical Emission Spectrometry (hereafter known as ICP-OES) analysis for three bronze gongs and 10 copper alloy artefacts from the shipwreck site off the northernmost tip of Borneo, Tanjung Simpang Mengayau Wreck the oldest shipwreck discovered in Malaysian waters. Despite

various tools and techniques to obtain the elemental composition of metal artefacts, ICP-OES is considered modern and reliable analytical chemical instrument for these bronze artefacts from shipwreck and museum collection. The analyzed artefacts from the cargo, based on the decoration of ceramics pottery, patinas AD – 1279 AD. The elemental data would pertain the metal present in China and reflects the maritime trade by the Chinese to the Southeast Asian countries during the time period.

Wild fungi have beautiful shapes, colours, some with sweet distinctive smell and uniqueness, which play an enormous contribution in many aspects of our life. Little is known about the species diversity and distribution of wild fungi in Malaysia in spite of knowing that there are enormous species to be discovered and documented. This book is to share knowledge and

photos of the fungi kingdom found in Sabah. The species were photographed in their natural habitat intended to show the variety of colours, shapes and uniqueness in their respective natural habitats. It will create awareness on the diversity and distribution of wild fungi, research opportunities in the field of mycology in Malaysia and simply to instil love for nature. Hopefully, it will also create networking for collaboration in the research, publication and identification for the wild fungi of Sabah.

The infamous “Lahad Datu intrusion” by a group of Sulu militants back in early 2013 was undeniably a blemish in the history of Malaysia’s national security. . The “Lahad Datu Incident”, which took the lives of a number of security personnel, has not only significantly impacted on Malaysia’s national psyche, but equally saw the resurgence of awareness amongst stakeholders

of Malaysian national security regarding the salience of border security and the corresponding need to ensure the readiness/effectiveness of the security apparatus in defending the nation’s territorial sovereignty and integrity from external threats. The purpose of this edited volume is to provide a scholarly view on the “2013 Lahad Datu Incident” by incorporating a cross-disciplinary study to produce a more in-depth analysis and holistic interpretation of this “watershed” episode of Malaysia’s national security. It is in lieu of such objectives that the contents of this volume have been purposefully arranged to systematically address and reflect on the related issues and queries regarding this national, and more specifically, Sabah state security phenomenon. It is hoped that this informative and scholarly volume would furnish a more comprehensive, not to mention, accurate interpretation and understanding concerning the dynamics and reasons behind this co-called “Sulu militant” intrusion as well as the compendium of measures undertaken by Malaysia’s security forces in nullifying this external threat in the east coast of Sabah.

The effort to explore the nature and cosmology of one society is not easy. This book tries to explain these aspects in stages and themes, starting with the discussion on the meaning of death from some human and socio-cultural approach of the Bajau’s. Apart from that, the Bajau’s views on death rituals also seem to be dominated by belief in supernatural beings and

strata systems or social hierarchies. Today, cultural behavior towards customs and rituals of death shows that Bajau’s natural and cosmological view seems to be syncretism. However, it is not possible that changes will take place drastically in the future as the process of purification of Islam among the Bajau’s is ongoing. Practices and traditional rituals in the customs of Bajau’s death have continued to this day as its meaning and function are still very much needed. The author hoped that even this book is an academic in nature, it has been re-write to cater to a public readership will contribute significantly to the study of the culture of indigenous peoples of Sabah, especially to provide useful information and cultural documentation of the Bajau community.

The best education system provides the best education to all children, irrespective of their ethnic group or socio-economic background. Malaysian education system aims to ensure that all children, irrespective of who their parents are and where they are schooling, will be equipped with the basic needs to succeed in their future educational endeavours and eventually in daily

life and the workforce. Malaysian education system strives to narrow the socio-economic gap, between rural and urban as well as gender in student achievement by 2020. Reducing socioeconomic disparities between rural and urban are likely to have an impact on the achievement gap among students. The education system in Malaysia will actively support social mobility by providing additional supports to those who are less fortunate, and thus ensure socio-economic background of students is no longer a determinant factor of their success in life.

This book is an attempt to contextualise the issues occurring in this part of the region which is not only solely constrained by security in the traditional sense, but also to ensure the livelihoods of citizens are being protected. The four pillars for a holistic approach identified in this book are based on the inputs by stakeholders in four workshops organised in throughout 2016,

under the same theme. It is realised that the challenges to the security of Eastern Sabah has many faces – piracy, illicit trafficking, and kidnappings – and these challenges are evolving. As such, an all-encompassing solution is needed.

Blue Growth and Blue Economy in the Context of Development Policies and Priorities in Malaysia highlights the significance of introducing ecological perspectives to seafood production and explains the contribution of this sector to sustainable development goals.Structured in five chapters, the book explains the relevance of harmonizing the three interconnected elements: economic

growth, environmental compatibility and social inclusion in seafood security. There are radical ideas in this book that require bold policy decisions for a more applied and problem-solving research, giving due credence to scientific advice in decision-making, graduate employment, the imperatives of aligning national development priorities with the global development goals.
