Brief synopsis

At a ball at the court, the hunchbacked jester Rigoletto mocks the courtiers cuckolded by the profligate Duke of Mantua, stirring them to plans of vengeance by abducting Rigoletto daughter Gilda, believing her to be Rigoletto mistress.

Gilda has never revealed to his father that she has fallen in love with a handsome young man who tells her he is a poor student, but he is in fact the libertine Duke himself.

After her abduction, Gilda is brought to Duke’s bedroom and, when Rigoletto realizes what has happened, he despairs and swears vengeance on the Duke.

Rigoletto pays a hit man to kill the Duke, but it happens that in this wild and stormy night, Gilda is wrongly stabbed by the hit man himself.

Gilda finally dies in the arms of Rigoletto.

It was not easy for Verdi to compose Rigoletto at that time of 1851. He intended to put music to a particular subject, with characters that had already caused scandal in Paris a few years ago(The king amused - by Victor Hugo) but nothing could be done about the censors, who would not allow the king to be portrayed as a cynical libertine.

He had to accept several changes to the original French version: the protagonist François I king of France was transformed into an anonymous Duke of Mantua. But Verdi did not want the king as protagonist of his opera; he preferred the court buffoon. And so the definitive title became Rigoletto (from the French Tribolet).

The premiere accorded a resounding success by the public. Rigoletto was the first of what is known as Verdi's "popular trilogy", followed by La Traviata and Il trovatore..

La donna è mobilequal piuma al vento

muta d'accentoe di pensiero

Sempre un amabileleggiadro viso

in pianto o in risoè mensognero

Woman is flightylike a feather in the wind

she changes her voiceand her mindalways sweet

pretty facein tears or in laughter

she is always lying

La donna è mobilequal piuma al vento

muta d'accentoe di pensiero

Woman is flightylike a feather in the wind

she changes her voiceand her mind

E' sempre miserochi a lei s'affidachi a le confida

mal cauto il core!Pur mai non sentesi

felice appienochi su quel senonon liba amore!

Always miserableis he who trusts her

he who confides in herhis unwary heart!

Yet one never feelsfully happy

who on that bosom does not drink love!

muta d'accentoe di pensiero

Woman is flightylike a feather in the wind
