ThesitelocatedalongtheDetroitRiverfrontallowedforanextensiveinteractivelandscapeelements.ThegoalwastotiethelandscapetotheresearchbeingconductedatGLERLwhileincorporatingecologicalandrecreationalelements.Theseincludealgaeandwatervegetationpodsthatencourageonsitecirculationandinteraction.ThesepodsalsoincludeaneducationalaspectaboutthecomplexsystemsoftheGreatLakes.Retentionpondsarealsoproposedasresponsestointeriorviewsandwaterharvesting.
DesigningabaseforGLERLconsistingoflaboratoriesforscientists,highbaysforboatmaintenance,offices,publicexhibitionspacesandlecturehallsallowedforuniquerelationshipsbetweenpublicandprivatespaces.Therevealingwallpatternsoccurringoninteriorwalls,exteriorwalls,andthelandscapeshowpublicandpri-vatespaceinanaestheticallyintriguingmanner.

Thesixstory536,000squarefootautomobilefactorywasbuiltin1919andhasbeenvacantforover20years.Thestudio'sgoalwastodevelopinnovativeprogramtofillthehistoricprecastconcreteindustrialbuilding.Myproposalwasafashionschooltoinhabitfloorstwothroughfourwithpublicpopupshops,cafe,bar,andexhibitionspaceavailableonthefirstfloor.Thefloorplateswerecutinawaytorevealtherunwayandpubicfunctionstoalltheabovefloors.Whileutilizingtheexist-ingstructuralcolumngrid.Thisprogramhastheoppor-tunitytoengagethepublic,availabilitytorentforevents,aswellasprovideaneducationalaspectinacitywherefashionisappreciatedbuttheavailabilityofthecraftislimited.

Thisstudiorevolvedaroundutilizinghybridizinghanddrawinganddigitaltoolsinarchitecturalrepresentation.TheMaggie'sCentrewastobelocatedacrossthestreetfromtheDetroitMedicalCenterinMidtown.
TheuniqueprogramoftheMaggie'sCentreincludesakitchen,diningarea,library,threecounselingspaces,atriumspace,andmeditationspace.Thebuildinghascurvedexteriorwalls,creatingasenseofsafetyandsecurity.Vegetationandgreenerywereproposedallthroughouttheinteriorandexteriorspacestoofferaninspiringsafespacefortheindividualsandtheirlovedonesthatarebattlingcancer.

Aportalforwhichtheviewercanexperiencealand-scapedifferentlythanthetypical.Initially,Iwasinter-estedintheabilityfortheviewertoseebothinfrontofthemandbehindtheminthesameframe,orviewport.Withtheintensionofhavingamorecomplexawarenessofaspaceinagivenmoment.Afterstudyingtheproto-types,itbecameveryapparentthattheseobjectsalsoposeapowerfulinfluenceontheenvironmenttheyarewithinduetoshadowsandreflections.ThiscomplexityinfluencedfurtherdesignapproachesembeddedintheDesignStudioVI.
