Jackson Riley was ordered bythe Russell County Court to show cause why his children should not be bound out as apprentices becauseit had been suggested that he was not capable of providing for their maintenance and education.137 Heappeared and satisfied the court of his competence. However. it is curious that in the same year Jacksonwas enumerated in the census living alone. Russell County (Family No.1) aged 63 living with his brother Thomas J. Riley.

The children of Jackson Riley were:

i. Solomon. born circa 1856 in Russell County. Solomon was enumerated in the 1870 Census ofRussell County, aged 15. as a farm laborer, in the home of William Roman, 55, with Catherine Riley,48. keeping house. Perhaps she was Solomon's mother. He married Jane Eaton on June 12.1875.138 Solomon, aged 30 years, died in Russell County on August 25,1886.139 Mary E. Riley, awidow born May 1841, was enumerated in the 1900 census as a laundress and head of household.Living with her was a daughter Lottie Eaton, born December 1866.

John Riley, aged 7, and James R. Riley, aged 2, were both living with Layton Mitchel, 56. and RebeccaMitchel. 66. in Russell County at the time of the 1850 Census. Next door Elizabeth Riley, 30. was living withAndrew Mitchel, presumably her brother. The presumption that Elizabeth Riley and Andrew were Mitchelchildren of Layton and Rebecca Mitchel is supported by the fact that all four were born in Grayson County.Just 20 years later on November 2, 1870, John Riley, 26. married Francis Campbell, 23. in RussellCountY.140 The marriage record indicates that John. a widower, was born in Russell County and was the

16

son of Berry and Milly Riley. Thus. Elizabeth (Mitchel) Riley does not seem likely to be the wife of JacksonRiley, in spite of the fact that she was living just 2 doors from him in 1850. .

The Third Generation

7. Hugh Lafayette Riley (Thomas. Daniel) married Josephine Bonaparte, the daughter of William and Jane(Horton) Bradshaw of Horton's Valley in Russell County, on December lB. 1871.141 Josephine was bornnear Belfast Mills in Horton's Valley on February 13. 1MO.142 Her father, William Bradshaw (1810-1870) wasthe son of John Bradshaw (ca1788-1824) and Sarah Horton (ca1791-1870). And her mother. Jane Horton(1812-ca1885), was the daughter of Enoch Horton (1786-1852) and Martha Stinson (ca1788-1850), earlysettlers of Dallas County, Texas.

On November 22. 1871, Hugh and his wife Josephine joined the other heirs in disposing of her deceasedfather's real estate.143 However. the Russell County marriage records clearly indicate that Hugh andJosephine were married on December 18. 1871, almost one month after the deed was signed. Perhaps themarriage record is incorrect and the license was not returned to the County Clerk until December 18th. Thecouple settled on and farmed a 397 acre portion of her father's estate which was located on the TurnpikeRoad near the Tazewell County line. From the sale price it seems that Hugh was a successful farmer. Butthe lure of new lands beckoned. They sold the farm near Belfast Mills on November 7, 1878 to Henry R.Gose for $2500 and soon thereafter made their way to Texas. Surely they were accompanied byJosephine's mother. Jane (Horton) Bradshaw. who moved to Dallas to be near her brothers and sisters. After spending some time visiting their Horton relations at Dallas. Josephine bought from C. J. Hamer andwife Fannie part of the 640 acre Jane Havens survey containing 160 acres on Cummins Creek in EllisCounty, Texas on January 9, 1880.144 She paid S1000 and two notes $700 each due January 1. 1881 andMay 1. 1882 at 10 percent interest. On February 12. 1881. Hugh Riley bought a 12 acre part of the RobertRay Survey for $60 from R. N. Chestnut. 145The lot is located approximately eight miles south of Ennis onthe west side of Waxahachie Creek. According to his tombstone. Hugh died on February 9. 1894. There, hemarried Mollie Steele on March 24, 1897 and Sled if tt}l;. old farm that had belonged to his grandfather,Thomas J. Riley.152Mollie, who was born on 11(,·, 8~1873 near Sword's Creek, was the daughter ofGeorge H. Steele (ca1835-1885) and Celia Ellen Finney (1845-1920) of Russell County. Over the nextseveral years, Mollie purchased in her own name the rights of the other heirs to the Riley farm. In 1899,Mollie paid $70 each to W. K. and Jennie Mae Davis and G. M. and Lula Ann Allen of Ellis County, Texas fortheir interest in the lands on the north side of the New Garden Road.153In 1900, she paid $75 to W. T. Rileyof Colfax County, New Mexico for his interest in the Riley land.154 In 1902, she paid $75 to Hugh L Riley ofEllis County, Texas for his interest. 155In 1904,G. M. and Lula Allen, W. K. and Jennie Mae Davis, and HughL and Johnnie Riley of Ellis County sold their remaining interest in the estate of their grandfather, ThomasJ. Riley, to Charles Henry.156 Also in 1904, C. H. Riley paid $60 to his brother Arthur for his interest.157Finally in 1905, C. H. Riley paid B. O. Caldwell $3000 for 86.69 acres in New Garden.158 Even afteracquiring all of the old Riley homestead, Charles Henry was not successful in farming the land in NewGarden. He returned to Texas in 1905, settling at Clarendon in Donley County.

Charles Henry died in 1943. The following excerpts from his obituary appeared in the local newspaper TheShamrock Texan.

Other Riley Families in Southwestern Virginia

Charles Riley, according to the family bible, was born on March 2, 1793.163Unfortunately, the bible leavesno clue to the identity of his parents or siblings. 8ecause he first appears in the records of WashingtonCounty, it seems likely that he was a son or grandson of either Daniel or Nathaniel Riley. Charles marriedMargaret Orr on August 1, 1816, presumably in Washington County although no license was obtainedthere;164Margaret, born on October 1, 1794. was the daughter of John and Jenet Orr, of WashingtonCounty. Margaret died on June 5, 1858.

In the room of Robertson Gannaway, Charles was recommended to be an Ensign in the 1st 8attalion, 70thRegiment of Virginia Militia from Washington County and promoted from the ranks on May 16, 1815.165Hewas replaced, on May 19, 1818, as Ensign by Thomas St. John. On November 23, 1825 for $270, Charlesand Margaret sold to Parker Smith the 40 acre tract on the Middle Fork of the Holston River that wasdevised to Margaret by her father.166 On the following day, Charles and Margaret sold the remaining 40acres devised to her by her father to James Orr for $300.167Charles Riley paid the taxes for the 80 acretract from 1821 through the year 1827.168Soon after selling their real estate, Charles and Margaret movedto Monroe County, Tennessee where they were enumerated in the 1830 and 1840 censuses. They nextmoved to Murray County, Georgia where they were enumerated in the 1850 census. After Margarers deathin 1858, Charles moved to Floyd County, Georgia to live with his son, John and was enumerated with himin the 1860 census. Charles died there on April 7. 1861.169

The children of Charles and Margaret Riley were:

i. Finley McCollister, born on April 25, 1817 in Washington County, Virginia. He married AdlineMalone in Murray County, Georgia on April 28, 1844.170 Finley died on February 11, 1854 inWhitfield County Georgia. 171

ii. Elizabeth Lefevre. born on November 20. 1818 in Washington County, Virginia. She marriedJames Freeman Grant on May 15, 1834 in Monroe County, Tennessee. She died on January 8,1884 at Jacksonville, Calhoun County, Alabama.172

iii. John Tevis, born on January 17, 1821 in Washington County, Virginia. He married ElizabethCrawford on April 15, 1841. John died on March 2. 1892 in Floyd County, Georgia.173

iv. Martha Jane, born on February 20, 1823 in Washington County, Virginia. She married SamuelM. Henderson on November 14, 1839. Martha died on October 21. 1846.174

vi. William Morrow, born on March 25, 1828 in Tennessee. He never married. William died onMarch 6, 1855 at Jacksonville, Calhoun County, Alabama.176

vii. Palina Grant, born on June 18, 1830 in Tennessee. She married Addison P. Hunter onSeptember 25, 1845.177

viii. Juliet Rhoten, born on January 15, 1833 in Tennessee. She died on November 19, 1833.178

ix. James Mathis, born on December 25, 1834 in Tennessee. He died on December 25,1834.179

John Riley, a farmer aged 42, was enumerated in the 1850 Census of Russell County. The fact that he wasreported to have been born in Russell county circa 1808 is intriguing because it infers that he wassomehow related to at least one of the aforementioned Riley men. It seems unlikely that John was a son ofDaniel and Susannah Riley, because neither he nor his children were mentioned in the records concerningeither Daniel's or Susannah's estate. Rather, it seems more likely that John was a son of Allen Riley, theonly other documented Riley in Russell County during that time frame. It is indeed unfortunate that noofficial record of John's death was recorded in Russell County. Also enumerated with him in the 1850Census was Elizabeth, aged 26, presumably his second wife as she was too young to have been themother of his older children, yet nearly too old to have been his daughter.

John Riley died intestate in Russell County circa 1854. On February 7, 1854, Elijah Ferrell, as administrator, filed the following inventory and appraisement of the estate:180

A rather common phenomenon in those times, but nonetheless interesting to note, is the fact that John'smost valuable possession was his bay horse appraised at $75, . As an owner of books, he must have beenliterate. The inventory reveals the normal allotment of household, kitchen, and farming utensils. He did notpossess the tools of any trade, which was somewhat rare. The inventory also included the following debtsdue to the estate. As a farmer, he must have been fairly prosperous, to have loaned the sizable sum of$158.42 to Thomas Riley. Having loaned such a large sum implies that John and Thomas were related, or

21

at least closely associated. John may have named his first son after his own father, William (Daniel). If so.then Thomas J. Riley was John's uncle. At his death. John had amassed an estate appraised at $304.98.The following sale bill demonstrates, however, that his livestock had been overvalued signiiicantly.181 All ofthe personal property brought only $99.80 at public auction, the proceeds of which were credited to theestate. After the sale, Elijah Ferrell, the administrator. filed the following account of the administration of theestate.taz
