Welcome to Term 2!

Wow at the beginning of the year we did not think that we would here- finding new ways to teach and learn. A big thank you to all the parents, caregivers, whanau and students of the Matai team. We are so impressed about how you have adapted to learning from home. We cannot wait until we are able to see you all again! As you can see from the photos apart from planning and teaching, the Matai teachers have been spending time with our bubble whanau. There has also been a lot of good food being made and eaten - not great for the waistline! Some of us have tried to use this time to get fit! We have also had a virtual Year 8 quiz night (which Matai won). Until we are back at school, we will be still be planning and teaching online. We are available on Google Classroom and also by contacting us on the following emails:

We are covering 2 themes this term. We first need to complete ‘How the World Works’ to give the students time to complete their summative task. For each theme, we have a Central Idea and Lines of Inquiry. The Central Idea is the big understanding that we want the students to come to by the end of the theme. The Lines of Inquiry break this down into smaller parts and from these the students can make an independent selection on the area they would like to inquire into.

Theme One How the World Works (23 April- 8 May)

Central Idea Scientific principles help us makes sense of the world we live in

Lines of Inquiry The behaviour and interaction of materials determines their use

Knowledge creates opportunities

Physical properties and characteristics of different matter

Theme 2 Where We Are In Place and Time Central Idea Inventions can make our lives easier Lines of Inquiry

Technology and inventions are adapted

to suit the needs of a community or person

Exploration creates opportunities for new inventions

The changes in technology over time

Other Learning Areas

Literacy Literacy is fully integrated into our themes. In reading, we will be looking into using different reading comprehension strategies to help us find the ideas in a variety of texts. In writing, we will be working on specific writing skills and grammar in order to improve what we output.

Mathematics The students will be working on Statistics- analysing, sorting and presenting data. We will also be learning about Measurement and Geometry. In Measurement students will be learning ways to measure time, space and angles. In Geometry students will explore shapes and the transformations these go through.

Specialisation Technology, the Arts, Science and P.E. - Specialist teachers will be delivering their programme online through google classroom and Seesaw. This will happen every Thursday. For more information please see the Specialisation newsletter.

Languages Students will be learning Spanish online twice a week for 45 mins with Cynthia Montesinos on a Wednesday and Friday.

Term 2 Rimu Team 2020 Chocolate, reading, running, baking, local hikes, ukulele and our

pets have filled our Rimu bubbles during the lockdown.

Welcome to Term 2 with Rimu Team. First and foremost, the teachers in Rimu Team would like to pass on their enormous thanks to all the students and parents for their incredible flexibility adapting to distance learning. The challenges you have faced have been difficult but, as a team, we have continued to manage the situation we find ourselves in as best we can with positivity and understanding. Although this term may look different to what was planned originally, we have made preparations for a number of different scenarios and have planned exciting activities and experiences linked to our adaptable IB themes. Even when distance learning, teachers are always available via email and we aim to reply to all emails within a 24 hour period: Rm 9 - Nick Edwards [email protected] Rm 10 - Jaimee Lightfoot [email protected] Rm 13 - Katrina Gomes [email protected] Rm 14 - Ashley Triana [email protected] Rm 15 - Jacob Markham [email protected] Rm 16 - Natalya Hazelwood [email protected]

Learning Areas IB Themes We are finalising one IB theme this term and then covering a second. We have adapted the Central Ideas (the big understanding) and Lines of Inquiry (the area that students could inquire into) for both these themes so that they can easily be worked on or completed through distance learning. Theme One: How The World Works Theme Two: Where We Are In Place And Time Literacy: Literacy is fully integrated into our themes. This term we will be looking into the language, punctuation and grammatical choices and features of different texts to develop these skills within our own writing. In reading, the students will be reading a variety of different texts to understand the potential meanings and interpretations that could be attributed to different text types.

Mathematics: We will start by consolidating and expanding our knowledge of statistics before moving on to geometry and measure later in the term.

Specialisation: Soft, Hard, Digi and Food Technology along with Music and the Arts. Rimu Team will continue to have Friday as their fully specialist assigned day each week. These will also be integrated into our themes.

Languages: Students will be learning Spanish twice a week for 45 mins with Ms Montesinos.

PE: Mr Jones and Mr Carlos will continue to run PE and sports programs whether we are distance learning or in school.

Welcome to Term 2 - 2020 This is the Totara (Purple Team) Newsletter and it will be published at the beginning of each term to provide an overview of our learning programmes. Please check the school website for important dates.

The Totara teachers have been hard at work planning a new and exciting term of learning.

We hope that you have all taken time during this holiday to rest, reset and enjoy quality time with your loved ones. We appreciate that learning and school life looks a little different as we move into Term 2 and we thank every one of you for your continued support. As always, we are excited about the new learning opportunities that a new term brings and hope that you are just as excited for another term at ANI. Class teachers will provide instructions on how individual classes are to access their learning this term and what digital learning will look like in each ILE. If you have any questions regarding the PYP, distance learning or any other matters, please contact your classroom teacher.

Theme 2 Week 2 - Week 6 (27th April- 29th May)

‘Sharing the Planet’ Central Idea: Varying perspectives on finite resources can create conflict and or competition

Lines of Inquiry: ● The value people put on resources in a

competitive world ● Management of finite resources ● Societies role in managing resources ● Conflict resolution/compromise

Literacy is fully integrated into our themes. In Theme 2, we will be looking at explanation/procedural writing, which will link into Sharing the Planet. During Theme 3, Where We Are in Place and Time, we will focus on information report writing. Students will look at identifying the key language features for each writing type and using them appropriately in their own work.

In Maths, we will be consolidating Measurement and then focusing on Geometry and Statistics. Maths will be integrated into the inquiry process when and where appropriate. Our expectation is that students continue to practice basic facts such as times tables. We will also be introducing a new platform for Maths learning (additional to EducationPerfect) called Maths Whizz. We will send students their login details in the first week, complete with information on how to use it. More info for parents can be found here.

Theme 3 Week 6 - Week 10 (1st June - 3rd July)

‘Where We Are in Place and Time’ Central Idea: Significant individuals and events have changed the world we live in today Lines of Inquiry:

● Challenges, risks, and ideas create opportunities ● Exploration leads to discovery ● A multitude of events shape the world we live in

Specialisation Specialisation will continue to be on Tuesday in Term two and will focus on engaging students in practical tasks which link to the main inquiry theme of Sharing the Planet, then the second theme of Where We Are In Place and Time. The Specialist team will be using the Seesaw platform to showcase student work so please ensure that you are connected to your child's account.

A final note from the Totara Team during this period of distance learning: There are learning opportunities all around our students all of the time. Please encourage them to find exploration in the uncertainty,

enjoyment in the unknown and inquisitiveness in the confusion. Stay safe and take care.

The Specialist team are committed to making sure that there is a continuation of teaching and learning experiences forall students and so this term we are focusing on inquiries and student agency and will be displaying all learning onSeeSaw. We have really enjoyed connecting with students online and have been blown away by the creativity andenthusiasm which our students are demonstrating. It is with mixed feelings that we have said goodbye to Mr Daldy as hehas taken a new position. He has been a huge part of the Kowhai team and delivered amazing experiences to ANI over thelast 4 years. Fortunately we have an amazing and talented new music teacher, Yasuko Okamura who will be starting withus this term.
