    President Arnold Fuoco

    opened the meeting by honoring

Theo Rushin and Bob Pattersonfor their hard work in making

Magi-Whirl 2011 a superlativeconvention and gala show. Theo

thanked everyone who helped and promised everyone an even better

Magi-Whirl 2012. Next thenominations for Ring 50 officersfor the next term were voted in.

    Before the Dan Lacey

Memorial Contest, PresidentFuoco introduced family membersand friends of the Lacey family inattendance: Cecelia Ritchie (Dans

    sister), Howdy Ritchie (Cecelias

husband), Tom Lacey (Dans son)and his mom

    Pat, John andJoan (Ceceliasfriends). Cecelia

told the audiencesome interestingstories aboutDan including a

hilarious eventwhere Dan didthe 100 dollar

bill switch for a bar patron whohad a little too much to drink.

    Capt Token & Alex McGuire

First up was Capt Token (Louis

    Hofheimer) who opened with a

burst of fire from which he produced two roses. He thenintroduced a Sherlock Holmes

book citing the dangers ofexcessive reading. The book was

so hot that it burst into flames

when he opened it. Next, with the

    help of Alex

McGuire, Louisattempted thedouble armchopper. After many laughs while

securing Alex to the chopper with

handcuffs, Louis slapped downthe blade and miraculously Alexs

arms were still intact andhandcuffed through the holes ofthe blade.

    Bob Carnathan and Silks

    Bob Carnathan performed

his variation of the SidewalkShuffle. It was called the Irish

Three Card Game. The moneycard (the Ace of Clubs) and three

blank cards were shuffled but toeveryones surprise the moneycard could not be found.

Mystifyingly he made each of thethree blank cards transform into

the Ace of Clubs. Bob then told astory on how he learned a

handkerchief tr ick from a boyhood

magician. A white silk magicallychanged to a red one and then

Thanks to everyone who madeMagi-Whirl a great success. Weformally acknowledged TheoRushin and Bob Patterson ashaving performed the lion's shareof the work. Now we will work onthanking many more individualcontributors. Re the behind-the-scenes of Magi-Whirl, I feel weneed a working manual thatdocuments the formal processesand procedures that the

chairperson and helpers can use asa guide to facilitate the tasksrequired to bring it to a successfulconclusion. I am willing to draft a"strawman" that can be filled in bythe Magi-Whirl committee.

Thanks to the performers andjudges at the Dan Lacey Memorialcontest last week. I could tell fromreactions of the six Lacey familymembers and friends that it wasvery successful. Finally, we have

the Winton Carroll Comedycontest next month so let ourincoming president, DannySelnick, know if you plan to

perform. There is no meeting inJuly. In August we hope to haveWayne Houchin as a lecturer.

BBBuuuffffffeeetttWe have had a very good

relationship with the Managementof the Holiday Inn. They give usthe meeting room free in return forour members eating at theEisenhower Station Restaurant inthe hotel. The restaurant

justifiably expects those to whomit gives meeting space to USE itsdining facilities.

Over the last few months hotel

management has noted the Ring50 attendance at the dining roomhas dwindled. This may

jeopardize our relationship for thefree meeting room. The people atthe Holiday Inn have been morethan courteous to us. Members areencouraged to make a concertedeffort to eat dinner at theRestaurant. So come to themeeting at 6:30, have a nice mealin the dining room, chat with the

other members, and then attendthe Ring 50 meeting.

    MMeemmbbeerrsshhiippHave YOU brought a

prospective member to the meeting? They must beinterested in

magic and be amember of theInternational

back to white. Bob played this to an abundance oflaughs as the handkerchiefs finally disappeared.

    Noland Montgomery & Alex

In third position was Noland Montgomery whohad the audience laughing as he produced a flower

bouquet and vase from his hat. Then he performeda coffee cup and ball routine where the yellow ball

kept appearing under the coffee cup. Nolan startledthe audience by rapidly multiplying the yellow ballover 10 times. With an assist from Alex McGuire, the yellow ball grew to the size of a lemon andthen an eight inch ball was discovered under

    Nolans hat. Next up was

Avi Littky fromthe Counts ofConjuring whomagically producedreal coca cola in a

glass bottle from asheet of newspaper. Then he wowedthe audience withhis own rapidversion of theDots Next spotcard. At the end heremoved one of the

spots, bit a piece off, and blew it back on such thatit was whole again. Avi continued with a bubbleroutine where soap bubbles bounced off his hand

and changed into solid spheres. He followed thiswith a superlative Strat-o-sphere effect wherered, yellow, and green balls magically changed

    places.

Dick Christian related an experience he hadwith a street vendor who sold him a Whats-itstick. A Whats-it is a strangelooking stick with

four colored pom- poms that areconnected bystrings. With aterrific play onwords, Dick hadthe audiencemystified as he

    pulled pom-pomsthat moved other

    pom-poms in a puzzling way.

Splitting the stickinto two pieces toshow they werenot connected, Dick Christian & Balloonhe left us with the question: Whats it do? Whatsit for? Dick followed this with a question focusedon what is magic? He stated that magic is theability to do the impossible and produced a balloonand a long, sharp needle to demonstrate this.Stating that the needle cannot penetrate the

balloon, he put the passable needle completelythrough the impassible balloon and amazed

    everyone by doing the impossible.

Dwight Redman took the stage and astoundedus by having a card selected from a shuffled deck, lost in the deck by three different spectators, butstill managed to find it. He followed this by havinga spectator just think of a card from a fan of cards.Dwight shuffled the cards and had the spectatorspell out the name of his card from the top of thedeck. The spectator was astonished when the next

card on the deck was his thought of card.(Continued on page 5)

Dwights magic continued when the spectator useda different deck to repeat the spelling. Again, thenext card was the same thought of card. Dwightended his routine with his version ofCardiographic where a selected card rises from adeck drawn on a large pad of paper. We weredumbfounded when Dwight handed the spectatorthe drawing of the selected card rising from thedeck.

Closing out thecontest was ReggieRice. Reggie had theaudience in stitcheswhen he used twospectators to vanishand produce a $100silk handkerchief. Hethen blindfolded anaudience memberafter she put her cell

    phone into a bag.

Placing severalcolored bags on thefloor and under the

pretext of performinga mind reading act,Reggie magically Reggie Rice & Bowling Ball

produced a real bowling ball. The audience howledas he repeatedly dropped the bowling ball onto the

bags supposedly containing the cell phone. Finally, all ended well as the cell phone was discovered ina box that was on the table from the start.

The contestants were graded by the judges andwhen the show ended, the scores were tallied. Thejudges were: John Roberts, Sam Brothers, RucjUffelman, Scott McDonald, Kevin McGuire, andBuddy Smith. The judges scores were compiled

by Bob Patterson and Danny Selnick. The finalmoment arrived and Nolan Montgomery wasannounced as the winner for the sixth time.

Everyone competing for the Dan Lacey trophyand the title DC Magician of the Year werewinners. However, it was difficult for the judges to

    pick a first place winner.

Contestants for the Dan Lacey Award

The final tally of votes ranked NolandMontgomery as the champion for 2011-2012.

Cecelia Ritchie, Noland Montgomery, & Tom LaceyNoland has won the cup six times (2004, 2005, 2007,

    2008, 2010, & 2011).
