The Olympic Torch Comes To Ripon

The Olympic flame, which started its journey from Athens a few weeks ago, finally made it to Ripon on June 19th. More than 1000 people gathered outside the Cathedral as the flame was passed from one torch to the next on our forecourt. Dean Keith was joined by civic leaders including Ripon’s Mayor and Mayoress as well as local schoolchildren who greeted the torch with a huge banner which said “Welcome to Ripon.”

Dean of Ripon, Keith Jukes, said of the Olympic Torch’s journey through Ripon: “We are delighted that the Olympic Flame

paused outside Ripon Cathedral on its route through the city.

“Seeing the flame is, for most of us, a once in a lifetime experience and the Chapter and Mayor and City Council were joined on the forecourt by both young people and other representatives from the Community. It was a whole day of celebration for a City that is proud of its traditions and sense of history!”

Cathedral Primary 200 Years

Upholding the Culture of Life

They stood three and four deep on the pavements. Children held a banner proudly displaying the message ‘Welcome to Ripon’. Representatives of the City Council, the Cathedral Chapter, Her Majesty’s Forces and other distinguished guests gathered on the forecourt. Then came the glad shout and, to quote a phrase from the gospels, ‘the whole City went wild with excitement’. In this way, with flags flying and with considerable razzmatazz, the people of Ripon welcomed the Olympic Torch.

Reporting that day for local radio, I commented that this was the moment that local people made a real connection with the games that are to come, and with those who will compete for the prizes on offer. What had been, until then, a remote event taking place in a distant Capital City suddenly became ‘one’ with this northern hinterland. Amidst the excitement, all were galvanised by the flame – drawn by its light.

Light, of course, is powerful. We see this day by day with our new Cathedral west doors and we see it in the same way by the candles that are constantly lit on our altars. Light for Christians symbolises the presence of Christ who once described himself as ‘the light of the world’. Day by day people are drawn to him – the greatest prize that any of us can ever attain.

Now that the flame has passed through Ripon we all look forward to the games but my own hope is hope that the sight of the flame will also have ignited a renewal of our faith in Jesus who is the true life. May we all come more faithfully to him and, as Saint Paul once said, ‘may we so run with perseverance the race set before us’ that one day we may arrive in the Heavenly City where rejoicing never ceases.

The everyday stories of Ripon Cathedral Primary School, going back 150 years, were on show to the local community at the school’s bicentennial fair on May 26th. In the middle of a swelteringly hot, summery Saturday, current pupils entertained their families and former pupils with drama, dance and music. Logbooks kept by former headteachers, as well as inspection reports, photographs and 20-year old videos have been unearthed as part of the school’s 200th birthday and were on display. Former pupils had also provided their school reports, photographs and memories of their school days which were included in an exhibition of Ripon Cathedral School, Past and Present.

Visitors had a rare chance to view some of these archives, which contain records of everyday life in the school, written by headteachers since 1865. They show the changing attitudes to children and learning, as well as the affect of significant

moments in history on Ripon. There are some fascinating accounts of lessons in sub-zero temperatures and lengthy school closures due to measles, smallpox and influenza. Headteachers in the late 19th century seemed to have a particular issue with ‘pupil teachers’ who were pupils training to become teachers. There are accounts of pupil teachers sticking toffee wrappers onto pupils’ faces, messing around with spectacles, arriving late and even passing notes via the children to local young ladies.

The school changed its status at the beginning of this academic year to become Voluntary Aided, strengthening its links with the Diocese. This year also saw the school becoming the first in the county to be awarded level one in the Stephen Lawrence Education Awards. These awards recognise and celebrate schools that have strong policies and practices in place to promote race equality.

In his St. Wilfrid Lecture on June 28th, former Chair of the Ethics and Law Committee on the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali, spoke in a clear and informed way about the ethical

issues surrounding Bio-ethics, or as he prefers to call it, Christian moral reflection on science. He stressed the importance of being open to new knowledge - and in this area there is certainly a great deal of new knowledge - yet at the same time the need to think deeply about its significance.

In a lecture which considered human life from its inception to death, Dr Nazir-Ali explored the question of when life and being human begins, the role of fathers, voluntary euthanasia, the medical definition of death and living wills and considered how we might respond to the various answers to these.

The next Wilfrid Lecture will be given by Dr Elaine Storkey on September 13th at 7pm.

How Like An Angel was an amazing fusion of Australian group Circa’s exhilarating brand of contemporary circus with the exquisite singing of I Fagiolini. Audiences packed into the three shows in which they were led on a journey of discovery around the sacred space of the Cathedral. Photographs from the shows can be seen on the Ripon Cathedral Facebook page. Online reactions via Twitter and Facebook included:

n Mere words don’t seem enough to do justice to this - breathtaking and moving

n OUTSTANDING performance - seriously mindblowing :) thank you!

n How like an angel was brilliant - visually stunning, exciting and uplifting

n This was the most amazing sacred experience ever! When my mouth wasn’t hanging open in awe, the tears were rolling down my face.

Visitor InformationRipon Cathedral has a history going back nearly 1400 years. The present church was founded by Saint Wilfrid and dedicated in 672, although it has been rebuilt several times since.

The ancient Saxon crypt – one of the oldest in the country – is the only part of Wilfrid’s original church that remains to this day. The Cathedral also has many other interesting features, not least the medieval woodcarvings that decorate the choir stalls, which are believed to have inspired Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice in Wonderland.

The Cathedral remains at the heart of the community to this day: a vibrant centre of prayer and pilgrimage, welcoming thousands of visitors every year to services, concerts, exhibitions and other community events.

The Giftshop, open daily, sells a wide range of cards, books and gifts.

Ripon Cathedral is open every day 8.30am to 6pm. Entry is Free.
