A season of Thanksgiving has begun as the calendar rolls around to November. Being grateful and giving thanks to God are good practices not only on our national holiday on the 25th, but year-round. I know that I would love having a thankful attitude all the time. But fear creeps in and causes my focus to shift to what is lacking. In our recent services, in the confession we say, “We gaze upon abundance and see scarcity.” This is a part of the fallenness of our nature and our world. How do we begin to re-shift to look through the lens of God’s abundance instead of fearful scarcity? One way to begin is to imagine the game of the egg toss. You might remember this standard of outdoor childhood parties. The game begins easily enough with gentle, back-and-forth tosses of a fragile, raw egg. With every successful catch of the egg, each person takes a step back – and tries again. Inevitably, a toss falls short, or someone catches the egg, but clutches it too tightly, crushing it and leaving nothing but a gooey mess. It’s probably been a long time since you’ve tried to catch an egg without crushing it, but most of us know what it is like as adults to hold too tightly to other things – such as the blessings and resources God gives us. One writer put it this way, “The fear of loss tends to drive our perspective. We fear there is only so much to go around; therefore, we think we need to hold tightly to all we have. We hold it close, thinking that the more we have, the happier we will become. However, God calls us to a different lifestyle – one marked by faith in our abundant God to provide for our needs.” The abundance of God encompasses all of life—from the most basic needs of food, clothes, and shelter to the highest spiritual needs for love and acceptance. What we do not always grasp is that scarcity and abundance are two sides of the same coin; and that the true opposite of scarcity is “enough”. When we have enough, pray and work for others to have enough, we will find the true joy of sharing. This is the grateful heart and thankful spirit I will be praying for you and myself this month.

See you in worship, online or in person,

Pastor Bill

Dear Church Family,

We are blessed and thankful for our new Church Council members for 2022: John Garrett, Mary Ann Marcha, Lisa Hitchcock-Weber, and Vanessa Rincones! Current members who will continue to serve in 2022 are Aimee Castillo, Lynn Cope, and Mike Kiser. Thanks to everyone who was present to vote during the Congregational Meeting on October 10. Please remember the council members in your prayers as they take on this important role for New Life. We have completed the budget for 2022. Based on the responses to the Call Committee’s recent survey, youth and family ministry was identified as a top priority. So, we have added funding to those ministries again, such as Camp Hope (New Life Day Camp), LYO, Youth education and faith formation, Confirmation Study Camp, a General Fund to help with some of the cost, for example, of Lutherhill Summer Camp, and a Youth Event Scholarship fund for families who do not have the financial means to send their children to camp. Now it is time for all of us to do our part. Please pray about what you can do to increase your financial support for the ministries of New Life, as well as how you can volunteer your time and your talents to make these a reality. Keep an eye on your mailbox for a letter along with your third quarter giving statement. Please continue to pray for the call committee as they complete the Mission Site Profile (MSP) and the search begins for a new pastor. Just a reminder that reservations are open for the ELCA Youth Gathering scheduled for July 22 – July 28, in Minneapolis, MN. See the link for all the details at https://elca.org/YouthGathering. Also, if you know of any youth who may be interested in attending, please let the church office know.

Peace be with you Mina Stagner 2021 Church Council President 903-279-8241

Saturday, November 6 is Fall Sweep-Litter Cleanup in Pearland. Meet at the church at 8:30 to participate in our adopt-a-spot litter clean up. Bags, gloves, masks, and refreshments will be provided. We did only a portion of it last time. I hope we will have enough help to do our whole street from Main to Schleider Dr. Students will get volunteer credit for participating.

Many thanks to Walt Wright for installing our new outdoor trash and recycling containers so securely. Thanks also to the ball players for using them. With the option for trash and recyclable disposal, we have less contamination in our paper dumpsters.

If you missed the drug take back this month, you can still take your unused prescriptions to a container in the pharmacy department in Walgreens and most other drug stores. There are also on going collections at Alvin, Angleton, Clute, Freeport, Lake Jackson, Richwood, and Sweeny Police Departments.

I remember when I was a kid in Virginia, way last century, the

beautiful fall colors, the rustle of fallen leaves, a slight chill in the air, and the smell of burning leaves. At least we don’t have the burning leaves anymore. My parents never burned leaves. We had a big yard, many trees, and three large compost piles. Throughout our country, solid waste collection took much of the yard waste to

the landfill along with every other kind of municipal solid waste (MSW). For cleaner air and fire prevention, burning leaves was discouraged. Locating landfills became a big problem. NIMBY, not in my backyard, was the common sentiment. The soil had to be right, to avoid contamination of water or farmland, and still accessible for garbage trucks. EPA requirements

to protect the environment, especially groundwater, actually preserves the contents and slows down decomposition. Landfill avoidance is a very important concept facing governmental entities today. Since 1960 landfilling yard waste has decreased from 94% of MSW to 50% of MSW. Recycling and composting has increased from 6% of MSW to 32% of MSW. Combusting with energy recovery has gone from 0 to 12% of municipal solid waste. For many

years, Pearland’s yard waste has been going to a commercial composter. With all that Pearland has going for it with recycling, why did they not include composting in their last solid waste contract? All the yard waste that Pearland residents put out in clear bags and bundles for yard waste pickup is going to the landfill. Next month I’ll be covering

options for environmentally sensitive ways to dispose of yard waste. No, please don’t burn your leaves.
