RESURRECTION The Rev. Christina van Liew

Rector’s Reflections
Dear Resurrec on People,
The Acts of the Apostles tells us that a er Jesus as-cended his disciples were immobilized by shock, grief, and confusion. It took an angel to said, “Snap out of it! It’s not over!” So they gathered in the same place where they had shared Jesus’ Last Supper, and where Jesus breathed the Holy Spirit into them. They devot-ed ten days to intensive collec ve prayer, preparing without understanding for what was to come. What came was the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the masses. Have you ever wondered what happens next with all those newly inspired people? That’s what the disciples had been preparing for in prayer. Pentecost launched them as spiritual midwives for the newly emerging church.
Pentecost is a celebra on of the birth of the church as an icon and a mirror of Divine Love. It is a celebra-on of inclusion, divine love, and the infinite power
of God to transform lives. Every year we celebrate this birth. But like our own birthdays, it doesn’t do much good to simply look back at the past. What brings joy to birthdays is an cipa ng the hope of what is to come with a sure knowledge that God’s comfort and peace will ou lank fear.
Pentecost is about us, as part of the greater church, already empowered by the Holy Spirit in our bap sm, saying “Yes” to a fresh infusion of Divine Power to

Tea & Scripture
Introducing Tea & Scripture gatherings
Star ng Wednesday , July 9th, we will be serving tea and scripture at 4:00 pm every Wednesday. Tea will be whatever we feel like: herbal, green, black, hot or cold. Munchies are welcome. Scripture will be the Lec onary readings for the coming Sunday, either the Gospel, the New Testament, or maybe even Paul’s le ers. The process will be to hear the par-cular passage read, then hear its “back-
story”, then hear it again in a different Bible version, then reflect, share, discuss. Come Sunday, what you hear in worship will take on new meaning! Homework is not necessary, but you are wel-come to bring notes from your favorite scholarly references for the “back-story”. Par cipa on can be as flexible as your sched-ule allows, so come when you can! ~

A Word from our Warden
Dear Friends, Today we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost. The church year is half over and soon half the secular year will be gone. Time moves very quickly and we are carried along with it.
Recupera ng over the last few weeks has forced me to slow down. I have more me to meditate, read, pray and just be s ll. This is one of the side benefits of convalescence. Time will not be so readily availa-ble in a month but I will s ll carve out me for these important prac ces because they enable me to find peace.
I want to thank all of you for your prayers, cards and phone calls – for all you did to support Paul and me a er my surgery. Your caring concern meant a great deal to us. We feel truly blessed to be part of this faith community.
The warm, sunny weather we have been wai ng for has finally arrived. Resurrec on people are moving forward. I am wri ng this on Tuesday, June 3rd – a few days before our Garden Party. A planning mee ng to finalize plans for this affair took place last Sunday. We are now hoping for great weather and a good turnout. When you read this the eagerly awaited event launching our courtyard garden in the community will have taken place. Actual details of the June 7th, garden party are discussed elsewhere in this newsle er.
In addi on to the planning mee ng for the Garden Party, we also held an ini al planning mee ng for the Penny Social last Sunday. Commi ees were se-lected for Baskets, the Kitchen, Publicity, Prizes and Setup and Cleanup. There will be another mee ng scheduled when we get closer to the October 24th, event. Meanwhile if you want to help on one of the commi ees or have any ideas to share please speak with Do e Lo en.
Today we bid Jane God’s speed as she heads off to camp. Our love and prayers go with her. May Jane and each one of us have a safe and happy summer. May we make me to find God’s peace. Blessings, Joan

share with others. Each me we are given new in-sights for being apostles and midwives for others, icons and mirrors of new life in God’s love.
Like Eucharist, Pentecost is a moment of anamnesis, the mysterious experience of remembering what once was by par cipa ng in it now. Just like the first disciples, we do this by gathering where we last broke bread with Jesus, where we were first infused with the Holy Spirit, and praying. For them is was the upper room; for us it is the church. Here we re-member the eternal truth of Eucharist: we are one with God and each other. Here we remember the eternal truth of Pentecost: we are instruments of spreading this Oneness with the rest of crea on.
Be not afraid of the power we receive from God; it is always for good. Our conscious inten on to be in-struments of Divine Love will guide us to remember that Resurrec on God gives resurrec on people all we need for resurrec on living. Let’s discover prayerfully and joyfully how God is preparing us to make a difference in new ways as we share comfort in caring, joy in sharing, strength in hope.
Alleluia, Christ is Risen, and the Spirit is with us!
Mother Christina
Day of Pentecost This term means “the Fi ieth day.” In the OT if refers to a feast of seven weeks known as the Feast of Weeks—apparently an agricultural event focusing on the harves ng of first fruits. In the NT the term refers to the coming of the Spirit on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1), shortly a er Jesus’ death, resurrec on, and ascension—fulfillment of a promise Jesus gave concerning the return of the Holy Spirit.
Pentecost emphasizes that the church is understood as the body of Christ which is drawn together and giv-en life by the Holy Spirit. Some understand Pentecost to be the origin and sending out of the church into the world. The Day of Pentecost is one of the seven principal feasts of the church year in the Episcopal Church.
Season of Pentecost May include as many as twenty-eight Sundays, de-pending on the date of Easter. This includes Trinity Sunday, the First Sunday a er Pentecost. This period is also understood by some as “ordinary me”—a period of the church year not dedicated to a par cu-lar season or observance, as in the Roman Rite adapted a er Va can II.
Ordinary me This term comes from the word "ordinal," which simply means counted me (First Sunday a er Pente-cost, etc.), which is probably a be er way to think of this me of the year. Counted me a er Pentecost always begins with Trinity Sunday (the first Sunday a er Pentecost) and ends with Christ the King Sunday or the Reign of Christ the King (last Sunday before the beginning of Advent). The 33 or 34 Sundays of Ordi-nary Time a er Pentecost (23 to 28 Sundays a er Pentecost) are used to focus on various aspects of the Faith, especially the mission of the church in the world. The Lec onary readings for these Sundays tend to be semi-con nuous readings through certain sec ons of Scripture, especially through the Synop c Gospel of the year. The sanctuary color for Ordinary Time is dark green, although other shades of green are commonly used. Green has tradi onally been as-sociated with new life and growth.

(Con nued from page 3)
In Chris an tradi on, green came to symbolize the life of the church following Pentecost, as well as symbolizing the hope of new life in the resurrec on.
Ordinary me can be understood in terms of the liv-ing out of Chris an faith and the meaning of Christ’s resurrec on in ordinary life. It may be referred to as the “green season”, because green is the usual litur-gical color for this period of the church year.
Episcopalians realize that the earliest the Day of Pentecost can be is May 10. So they number “Propers” from the Sunday “closest to May 11”. Be-sides the mes of year that have their own dis nc-ve character, there remain in the yearly cycle thirty
-three or thirty-four weeks in which no par cular aspect of the mystery of Christ is celebrated, but ra-ther the mystery of Christ itself is honored in its full-ness, especially on Sundays. This period is known as Ordinary Time.

Grateful Hearts Grow in God
There is a flow in our liturgy that is intended to meet us where we are and draw us into God’s presence ex-pec ng to be blessed and a blessing to others. This is why we start with acclaiming God’s loving presence, then confessing our obstacles to accep ng God’s grace (if you have not yet worshiped with us, know this con-fession is corporate yet private – no par culars are shared out loud). Having checked our baggage with God, we are free to carry on lighter, more able to ap-preciate the goodness of life.
So we turn to each other and briefly share a reason we are grateful. This gra tude carries us seamlessly into hearing the Good News message of the day, praising God for that which we cannot even yet imagine, but is promised and true.
We bring our hopes and concerns to God in prayer trus ng God is already listening, caring, and respond-ing; again, in ways we cannot o en see. A er we cele-brate the birthdays and anniversaries of the coming week we now share God’s blessings with each other. We may want a blessing on our lives – for travel, events, rela onships, hardships, or transi ons. We may want to give someone a blessing. Some days we are both. The one wan ng simply says, “I ask God’s blessing on my life (and any specifics they want to share)”. The one giving says “Receive God’s blessing on your life (and any specifics shared.” That’s it! Of course, we keep these sharings confiden al. ~ CvL
