Darby Logger DaysJuly 15 & 16, 2011

Darby, Montana Logging Sports Competion, Live Music, Great Food

In 1880 Ryan’s great great grandfather moved to the beautiful Bitterroot Valley of Montana. Logging helped support the Conner family then and does now. At age 16 Ryan purchased his fi rst timber sale, caught the logging bug, started a logging company and continues to be infl uential in Montana’s forest management to this day. In 2005, Ryan and Robin formed R&R Conner Aviation, purchased their own UH-1 Super B Helicopter, and started on a whole new adventure in the Bitterroot Valley.

They say the company is only as good as the people, and are grateful for their employee’s loyalty and hard work. The Bitterroot Valley, its natural resources, and its people have always been an integral part of their lives and livelihood. Whether it is in business, the community or proper resource management in Montana, the Conners know how important it is sustain proper growth and management for success in the long run. They want their kids to have the same opportunities they have to live and prosper.

Being featured on the internationally syndicated television show Ax Men, R&R Conner Aviation may be the best known heli-logging company in the world. This type of logging and the logging restraints faced by the Forest Service have led to the production of this DVD featuring today’s helicopter logging practices in Montana’s Bitterroot Valley forests. Ryan, Robin and the crew encourage you learn about the latest struggles of forest management and timber salvage, as well as their part in the solution on this Logging in the 21st Century DVD.

Sales of merchantable timber in the national forests have declined. Beetle kill and fi res have increased the dead wood. The Black Forest Division of R&R Conner Aviation is working to restore health and beauty Montana forests. You can also watch Logging in the 21st Century on the internet at www.rrconner.com to learn more about forest management and the roll R&R Conner Black Forest Division is playing in Montana and the Bitterroot Valley.

The Bitterroot Scottish Irish Festival is a community based event with the primary mission to promote education, awareness, and pride in our local heritage and history. Nationally sanctioned competitions for Highland games, Highland dancing, and Pipe & Drum bands draw world-class competitors from far and wide. Approximately 3000 festival attendees and over 500 participants from outside the Bitterroot Valley attended the 2010 festival for these judged competitions. Representatives from Scottish and Irish clans, as well as vendors specializing in hand-crafted wares, regional music and foods offer many opportunities to share stories and fi nd out more about the rich history we all share.

The festival is held on the Daly Mansion Grounds, which serves as an ideal outdoor venue. There is something for everyone at this fun, lively family event, as it presents a unique refl ection of all who call the Bitterroot Valley “home’.

We invite you to participate in this year’s festival -- bring the entire family for a fun day of warm camaraderie and a

shared sense of kinship!

Comedies, dramas, musicals, Shakespeare in the Park, and many more performances are just a sampling of the year-round schedule put on by the Hamilton Players at the Hamilton Playhouse. Keep an eye on their schedule of events because you will not want to miss any of these wonderful productions. The Players has provided live, quality theatre for over thirty years, building a large supportive audience. This relationship has inspired many more community members to take the stage and join the Hamilton Players family. The new vision of the theater has extended to the creation of a Theater School for children ages K-12, with fall, spring, and summer programs. This has been a successful endeavor reaching a new generation of performers. www.hamiltonplayers.com

His parents gave him a camera for graduation from high school. Fourteen years later he became a full-time photographer. William (Bill) Muñoz graduated from

the University of Montana with a degree in history and now resides in Montana’s beautiful Bitterroot Valley. He has provided photographs for more than 100 books, including the works of Dorothy Patent Hinshaw. Bill appreciates the need for his photography to spark a child’s imagination. It is the ‘wonder’ of the world of nature that he feels and attempts to capture in his images. The Bitterroot is proud to have William Munoz living here, capturing the beautiful Bitterroot Valley in his photography.

It’s a great place to make your home, the Bitterroot Valley. Montana is about truly living with fishing, hiking, skiing, snowmobiling, hunting, boating and camping all just outside your front door. Rafting the Bitterroot River, hunting and camping are just a few of Bob Pauley’s favorite activities – along with finding a great home for great folks that desire to share Bob’s home land.

Finding the perfect spot for your lifestyle is important to Bob. When you are happy with your home, you will be a good neighbor and friend. Bob’s love of the valley and the simplicity of the Montana lifestyle make it easy to introduce you to the friendly community of the Bitterroot valley. Buyers, sellers, bankers, realtors and neighbors all know and trust Bob to put the cares and concerns of his clients first. Just the way you’d help your friend, that’s how Bob will treat you. After 17 years in real estate you can trust Bob Pauley. Your choice of properties is currently excellent and with interest rates at low levels, this might be the perfect time for you to consider investing in the Montana Real Estate market.

Farmers marketThe Restoration Begins with the Cupola Campaign at the Ravalli County Museum in Hamilton. The project is in full swing and we are proud of the historic restoration taking place outside as well as the soon to begin interior renovations. The Old County Courthouse designed by A. J. Gibson has been close to the heart of the downtown for over 100 years. The events that have taken place inside its hallowed halls and ante chambers have had the power to change people’s lives and make stories worth retelling. The Old Court House has been the site of countless historic events, trials, day to day activities and more recently many cultural explorations as well.

The Mission of the Museum is to preserve the cultural heritage of the Bitter Root Valley for you and future generations. As the home of the Ravalli County Museum it now has a fresh vision to present to the public. This Spring, as part of the ongoing evolution of this magnifi cent old building, you will experience the grand opening of several new exhibits, enhanced educational programming and a refurbished space that will draw you in … to history. Keep up with the progress on the museum’s website,

NExplore Between the Worlds

“Variety is the spice of life” and Karen Suennen, chef and owner of The Spice of Life Cafe & Catering, likes it that way. She wants to create a dining experience that is welcoming to everyone. The menu is diverse and uses spicy ingredients such as wasabi or chili peppers, but, Suennen states, “everything on the menu is not hot” she tries to include something for everybody. You will nd a delectable variety including a bit of Caribbean, Thai, Japanese, and Italian cuisine. There is also a children’s menu, and beer and wine are available. “We use local ingredients whenever we can,” says Suennen, who’s half acre home garden provides some of the restaurant’s herbs, vegetables and owers. Wild salmon, naturally raised beef, and vegetarian options are included. The decor is fun and funky with art from local artists on display. Folks are encouraged to come as they are, so if you are just off the river or ski hill, please stop in. The restaurant does not take reservations so no need to worry about that either.

Bitterroot Mountain SummitsAt the beginning of his 375 page book, Michael Hoyt writes, “Many people don’t attempt hiking and climbing to the summits of the Bitterroot Mountains because they are afraid — afraid they’ll get lost, afraid it’s too diffi cult, afraid of the wildlife, or simply afraid they don’t have what it takes.” He then proceeds to explain how you do not have to be afraid and how a reasonably in shape person with no technical climbing skill can fi nd their way to the top of most of Montana’s Bitterroot Mountain Range peaks.

This one of a kind guide book, published by the Bitterroot Valley’s Stoneydale Press, gives detailed information for the average person to be able to fi nd their way to these magnifi cent peaks and take in the heady eagle’s eye view and sense of accomplishment they afford. You will fi nd clear directions to the beginning of each climbing route, most of which start at Forest Service trailheads. But the book truly shines when the routes leave behind the well used trails, as the directions here are particularly

detailed so you can fi nd your way. Hoyt, with humor and clarity, begins with a brief overview of safety and wilderness hiking necessities, followed by his classifi cation of trail diffi culties. The rest of the volume is devoted to how to get to each individual peak he covers, over 50 of them. Each entry is clear and detailed, including precise directions, topographical maps, elevation gains, diffi culty level, and more.

There are, of course, more exacting climbing routes which technical climbers prefer for most of these peaks but you do not need to be hard core to get there. This book will guide you to the summits without the necessity of using and carrying technical climbing gear. If you wish to make your way out of the forests and river bottoms and up into the peaks of the Bitterroots, this book is most assuredly for you.

History and big game hunting in north Idaho, with the added zest of subsequent campfire story-telling, have walked hand-in-hand through the years, since John Colter and his horse tumbled into the raging rapids of Hungery Creek in the Idaho mountains on the westward jaunt of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in the fall of 1805. It hasn’t been until now, however, that anyone mingled the two — hunting and history — in a collection of stories intended to highlight the personal intensity and joy, associated with the Idaho hunting experience as a cherished way of life. Fred Scott, who has spent a lifetime working as a miner out of Wallace, now realizes that he has had, over the past fifty years, the privilege of pursuing that game at the absolute apex of the hunting experience in his part of the world. The result is a new book titled Memories of Hunting Idaho’s Golden Era in which Scott shares some 64 stories of hunting adventures over the past fifty years.

His book joins several others from the publishing house of Stoneydale Press, located in nearby Stevensville, Montana, that look in on the combination of hunting and history in Idaho and other places. A couple of them are brand new and some have been around for awhile.

The journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition tell us about Colter being dumped, along with his horse, into the icy waters of Hungery Creek in the midst of a major, and vicious, winter storm. Colter not only survived but had the presence of mind to hang onto his rifle in the midst of that mishap. That rifle was more important to him for survival than the blanket and other gear that he lost at the time! Colter went on, of course, to become one of the most famous of early-history folk heroes in the American West. A fur trapper, he was the first white man to travel through what is now Yellowstone National Park — Colter’s Hell it was called, once he told about “finding” Yellowstone. Shortly after that, Colter became legendary in the history of the American West when, upon capture by the Blackfoot Indians in the Three Forks area at the headwaters of the Missouri River he was stripped, beaten after they’d killed his companion, John Potts, and given a chance to run for his life. That run, of course, in which he managed to escape, made him legendary and a new book, Colter’s Run by author Stephen T. Gough, issued by Stoneydale Press, is now available to give us an opportunity to look into that early-day Idaho hunter’s life in great detail.

On the heels of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, another famous personage entered the saga of North Idaho’s combination of hunting and history — famed Canadian fur trader and map-maker David Thompson, whose exploits from 1807-1813 brought the first commercial fur trading enterprise into the region, well before any American free trappers. Now a major book outlining Thompson’s efforts to establish fur trading posts in the area has been published. Titled Sometimes Only Horses to Eat, David Thompson: The Saleesh House Period, the 392-page book was researched and written by author Carl Haywood of Thompson Falls, Montana. It gives incredible insight into Thompson’s historic period in North Idaho, Northwestern Montana and northeastern

Washington.

Which brings us back to retired Wallace miner and now author, Fred S. Scott, whose just-released book Memories of Hunting Idaho’s Golden Era puts a common man’s touch on the rich heritage of hunting elk and bear in the North Idaho mountains. This 256 page reminisce touches on a lifetime of pursuing big game under every imaginable condition of weather and circumstance, from his First Buck – 1962 through such tantalizing tales as Suicide Bull – 1992 and No Second Chance – 2006.

Scott’s book follows in a tradition of Stoneydale Press’ outdoor, hunting and historical books with ties to Idaho, including such tiles as Hunting Open Country

Mule Deer and Bugling for Elk, both by Nampa writer Dwight Schuh, 70,000 Miles Horseback In The Wilds of Idaho by

longtime outfitter Don Habel, and a wonderful Idaho elk hunting story in the reminisce book by W. Mitchell Rohlfs, the classic Cottontails to Kudu: A Hunter’s Journey.

Will to Live: A Saga of SurvivalThe dramatic story of a Wisconsin logger, Gary Edinger, with ties to Montana. He miraculously, some say heroically, survived a woods accident in 2007 when a falling tree sheered off his left leg below the knee at a work site too far distant from help for him to make it through the ordeal alive.

Authored by Edinger, himself, the book not only details the accident in which he found himself injured in the cold February woods of northern Wisconsin but having to face the realization that, at the best, he was going into shock and bleeding to death with only 30 minutes to live. He was more than 30 minutes from any possible help and whatever he did, he had to do it immediately. Against those “impossible” odds, Gary did what it took to survive – with critical and competent help from a 911 operator and his rescue crew. In his book he explains what he believes enabled him to accomplish the

miraculous: a lifetime of willing himself to succeed in a number of endeavors.

Edinger believes several factors allowed him to survive that cold February morning. They include his hardscrabble upbringing in the Wisconsin north woods and an ingrown family pride for making do under any kind of circumstances. These combined with a fi erce, inborn will to succeed imbued by his family, enabled him to become a world class sled dog racer, undertake a fi shing business on the Yukon River, and establish and maintain a successful logging business.

“Will to Live: A Saga of Survival” is a 192-page book that begins with a dramatic description of the accident in a chapter titled “Alone With Thirty Minutes to Live.” The reader joins him as he looks back on his life to this point and how it has shaped his character, then experiences his hectic 17 minute pick-up drive toward the oncoming ambulance rescue while keeping up a running dialogue with 911. This book is an exciting and edifying read for anyone.

Red Willow Antiques and Collectibles, actually two store fronts on Main St. in Stevensville, makes the drive worth it. It is just plain fun to casually peruse the diverse antiques, the collectibles, and even the consignment pieces. You never know what you might fi nd. Take a break with a short walk to a downtown Stevensville restaurant, then come back and fi nish your tour. Red Willow’s owner, Janet, can usually be found working on her own line of custom-period western clothing and leather apparel, in back in the work shop.

Lisa Archer Silks was offi cially established in 2001, but the concept has been in development since she was a teenager. Fabrics, texture, and color have always fascinated her. This passion continued as she grew older, and eventually began designing clothing for family and friends, and of course herself.

Wearable Art! Each piece is hand painted on 100% silk and/or silk rayon using a wide range of hues, and surface design techniques which provides a luxurious array of color combinations. The painted fabric is then sewn together to make a beautiful piece of wearable art. When you go out in one of the famous Lisa Archer designs, you will feel as valuable as a piece of art. Lisa Archer silks can be seen at the Red Willow in Stevensville, MT. It is worth the drive.

Where do you hang your hat? Well for me it’s Victor Montana. Home of the hardest working, self sacrifi cing, most giving people, you will ever meet. M-m-m-m, I think I’ve heard that description about Montana’s population in general. Oh, and did I mention Victor has breath taking views, like Bear Creek over-look, Fred Burr lake, Sweathouse Creek, the Bitterroot River, just to name a few? Like most of us, I love the community I call home and the valley we live in. For me it’s Victor and the

Bitterroot Valley.

For most communities, there is a signature event and Victor has had their own. The last four years a handful of volunteers and myself with the support of some businesses, non-profi ts and a few individuals have had the privilege of keeping the annual Chief Victor Days celebration fl ourishing. It’s a time every year we as a community get to share in honoring Chief Victor, after whom our town is named, one of the many great leaders of his time. Chief Victor Days is the second weekend in June. Last June was the 28th annual celebration. This celebration is one honoring our heritage and celebrating the culture of the Victor Community — A Gathering of Traditions.

Like many communities in Montana and elsewhere, keeping participation and enthusiasm alive is hard work especially

not to mention fl avor. If you haven’t stopped in Victor for dinner you should. Cowboy Troy’s is going to surprise you. A lot more than just the sign changed when Troy, Renee and Clayton created this restaurant and bar on Highway 93 in Victor.

If you live in the Bitterroot not only will you fi nd your friends enjoying dinner in the restaurant, warming up from the warmth of the wood-fi red oven, or having a drink with

friends at the bar, and listening to live music and dancing, but you will fi nd locally grown, fresh veggies on your pizza and produce in your salad. At this time Cowboy Troy’s is proudly using Ayres’ Angus (Stevensville, MT) dry aged beef for the burgers & Life Line Dairy (Victor, MT) to make their hand crafted fresh Mozzarella.

The to drive for pizzas are baked in their custom designed wood-fi red brick oven in authentic Neapolitan fashion. Choose from 15 different specialty pizzas, with 7 different sauce selections or try each of the 11 different

fl avors of chicken wings. Delightful salads, with house-made dressings & delicious burgers are among the many other specials that the kitchen creates on a whim. Cowboy Troy’s Catering will bring all of these wonderful fl avors and much more to your event from small offi ce parties or lavish weddings.

Once you have relaxed to a fi ne, very reasonably priced, dinner or lunch you will feel so good you will want to make your way to the bar for some dancing, singing, and good times with good friends.

during diffi cult economic times. Chief Victor Days in the early years had a large group of community volunteers. An event of this size requires it. There were donations of time and money from people through out the valley and Missoula. Products and services were a fraction of the costs compared to now. We as a community are so grateful to have had the participation and contributions from so many, for this special event, over the years. As we wait for highway 93 construction to be completed through the town of Victor and an upturn in the economy, it seems we have an opportunity to take a breath and examine the future of the Chief Victor Days Celebration.

It is with regret that I have decided step away from the position of director for Chief Victor Days. The Chief Victor Days Event, its’ history and inventory has been placed under the care of the Victor Heritage Museum until the Community regains it’s energy and decides how to move forward. The friendships, the history, the stories all combine to make Victor a unique entity in the Bitterroot Valley. I have truly enjoyed being part of what makes Victor so special. I look forward to the future of this unique spot in the road that many of us call home.

Sincerely, Angie Dobberstein, former Director of Chief Victor Days

Mikesell’s takes pride in their ability to carefully select and offer you a diverse selection of traditional, modern and even unique jewelry. Each piece is hand selected to insure you receive the best value — the highest quality at the best price.

Custom design and resetting require the trust you will only appreciate once you have worked with Cindy Mikesell. Your jewelry and family keepsakes never leave the store and you will be speaking directly with the jeweler rejuvenating or creating your family treasures.

Repair and restoration require a delicate touch, an eye for detail, the right equipment, and an understanding of the importance of your family jewelry. At Mikesell’s you will talk to jewelry professionals. The Bitterroot Valley is their home, and you will find you can trust them. Like good neighbors they listen carefully to your desires and handle your family heirlooms with the respect they deserve. Mikesell’s considers it a privilege and honor to restore and preserve your family history.
