River Transport (the steamboat)
Economic History
The post colonial period:
Overcoming the constraints transportation
steamboats then became very successful .used
A development of a transportation net started in the early 1800s
Reduced freight rates
Canals were built to overcome the transportation network..
- they were very expensive
- built in the eastern states of the united states
In the early 19th century there was no
By 1816 100 miles of canals were built
1820 1830 canal construction picked up (3326 miles of canals were available in
the united states.but there after canal construction declined because of the
railway..
Canals had disadvantages: one canal was very successful Erie canal (not being
used)
By 1950 canal construction had seized
Why they were not successful
eerie canal started (1813 and 1825)
- economic activities were taking place in new ohio valley(transportation provided
by the great lakes)
erie canal connected great lakes
Contributed to the development to the eastern part of the united states.no
agriculture could have been shipped by the great lakes to the eerie canal to the
Hudson river to nyc.
Stimulated the commercialization of agriculture in western new York and Midwest of
the USA. in area surroundings the great lakes and eastern part of US
It stimulated industry in the east, particularly in new Englandby providing access to
western markets, particularly manufactured goods.
It contributed to growth of nyc as a port, a commercial center and a manufacturing
center.

Other cities such as Detroit, buffalo and Chicago owed their birth and subsequent
development to the Erie Canal.
ROADS AND TURNPIKES
- same period they were working on steam boats, canals, and developing land
transportation
When turnpike was built, they charged tolls, .they had turnpikes on the road
ESSAY QUESTION ON THIS :::::!!!!
Railway system in AMERICA!!! (early railways were powered by horses) then the
steam engine replaced horses.
WE WANT how many miles of reailways were being built and how fast..the need to
serve entire country
THE FIRST RAILROADS USED HORSES in the US as motive power..(had to acquire land
to build railway) bying land verycheapforcing people out..illegal things because
it was very important.first railroads used horse power.(the steam locomotive was
not developed yet)
1st railway boom in the UNITED STATES began in late 1840s and 1850srailway
construction into two periods.
Railway Construction: two periods:
The first period: The beginning of the railway boom in the late 1830s to the coming
of the economic depression in the 1870s
The first economic depression that was experiences was in 1870sfirst depression
called Long Depressionperiod of almost continuous growth of the network except
during the civil war..
Civil war disrupted construction of railway.
7 year depression in 1870 .
70,000 tracks already in operation (1870) were already in operation..
2nd period of the American Railway history extended from the depression to theprosperous first years of the new century, one of consumptions and
consolidation.so many rail companies building railways that they were competing
with each other.trying to get rival railway business out ..
By 1900, 200 miles were in operation.the new mileage filled in the network in the
eastthey were building far more than they were supposed to build.

They became oligopolies --- small number of sellers.
First railway line was Ohio Railroad (started in 1828)
1840s and 1850s.railway construction picked up..became more an internal mode
of transportation.almost completely replaced canals.competing directly with the
steam boats and the turnpikes.
The second phase:
Extended from the depression years of the 1870s to the prosperous first years o the
new century..it was a period of consolidation and competition but also railway
construction continued a pace.
The first railway boom began in the late 1840s and 1850s but the first lines were built
in 1830s and 1840s.. they were built to connect existing commercial centers and to
supplement existing water transportation..that is the pattern of railway first coincided
with the already settled areas of the eastern sea board.
These lines were all short, rarely more than fifty miles.
They connected towns in Massachusetts, New Jersey, also lines linking new York and
Philadelphia.
Philadelphia and Baltimore and Baltimore and Washingtonthey were connecting
lines with most important economic activity..
Elaborate on the economic reasons for the American Revolutionary War.a page.(American war of independence)
Have to tell me what those reasons are and why thyose reaoosnes you listed
contributed to the revoulationary war
