Greetings Relay For Life-River Valley friends! We are celebrating 14 years of Relay in the River Valley area this year and welcome you and yours to join us at the Hosmer Field Complex on June 3-4. Our theme this year is “Sports!”

Relay For Life is the signature event of the American Cancer Society, bringing much needed funding to research, education, prevention and patient services in our area.

Hats off to everyone in the River Valley area, their friends and families for the incredible support they give this event. Relay For Life brings together people from all of our communities in the River Valley area. It is our pleasure to work with the businesses that so generously support us and the committee members that dedicate countless hours to bring the event together. Many, many thanks to all the team captains and the team members who put in so many hours thinking of creative fund raisers for the event.

Thank you for all the HARD work.

Celebrate! Remember! Fight Back!

Sincerely,

Diane MitchellPeggy Briggette Co-Chairs

American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery ProgramThe Road to Recovery Program

sponsored by the American Cancer Society is a service offered in which volunteer drivers provide cancer patients transportation to and from their scheduled medical appointments. Drivers donate their time and the use of their personal veh icles to help en su re t hat cancer patients get the lifesaving treatments they need.

The Road to Recovery Program is ver y important to the River Valley area as it helps those cancer patients with their transportation to their treatment schedules when family or friends aren’t available to take them.

Many patients need daily or weekly treatments over a period of months and simply have no way to get there.

Although family and friends may be able to help, there are many times when they are not available and the Road to Recovery Program provides transportation options for patients in this situation. To find out how you can volunteer to drive or if you need this program, please give Diane Mitchell a call at 364-8358 or call 1-800-227-2345, your local American Cancer Society office.

Participants in the 2010 River Valley Relay For Life walk around the track at Hosmer Field. The event attracts people of all ages from around the River Valley area.

ABBIE BLAUVELT:

Why I relayI relay because I know a lot of people who have had cancer. My grandfather had colon cancer. He is a survivor. I’m very happy because I love my grandfather very much. He has taken me to see the Red Sox, visit Florida, and I love going camping with him.

I also lost a friend named Maddie who had leukemia. I met Maddie at Camp Sunshine, which is a camp for children with life threatening diseases. I also went to Camp Rainbow with her; she was a good friend and I miss her.

My great-grandpa Dewey had bone cancer and died a few years ago. I loved him a lot. I used to walk to his house almost every day to visit him with my cousin Sam. Once, he brought me and Sam to D.E.W.s Wild Animal Kingdom. After that we went to Dutch Treat.

I never got to meet my other great-grandfather because he

died of lung cancer before I was born. I really wish that I could have met him.

My great-grandmother has only one kidney because she had to get her other one taken out. She had cancer in one kidney. Her husband, my great-grandfather, had prostate cancer. Luckily they both survived.

My great-uncle also has prostate cancer. He is having surger y tomorrow morning. My great-uncle Wayne died of leukemia.

The last reason why I relay is because I had leukemia. I have a Relay For Life team named Abbie’s Avengers made up of family and friends who love me very much and want to find a cure for cancer. One of the fundraisers that I am doing is selling note cards that I designed with all proceeds going to Relay For Life. This is why I relay and I am proud that I do.

DEBBIE MILLIGAN:

Why I relayAt last, Relay For Life is right around the corner. It’s been a long winter for most of us. However, cancer never takes a break. Some of us have lost loved ones over the winter season. So, now we must go through the grieving cycle again. Through Relay, it’s a healing process which helps me cope with some of the sudden losses of loved ones. There are also the ones who are in treatment. This is why I choose to fight alongside them. I give my time and money because CANCER NEVER TAKES A BREAK.

DIANE MITCHELL:

My Relay storyMy reason to relay is the many faces of family and friends who I see everyday and also the memories of all those we have lost to this terrible disease. Thanks to the American Cancer Society, more and more of our family members and friends are able to celebrate birthdays this year. What a wonderful gift!

Researchers don’t have al l the a nswers, but t hey have made incredible strides in the past 14 years. Money raised by Relay goes to fund research, patient services, prevention and detection. I have seen f i rst ha nd how resea rch has helped several community members and I wil l a lways be

eternally grateful for the hard work our Relay committee, teams, and team members have done to raise money to fund research and help them fight their battle and have the chance to celebrate not just their birthday, but each and every day. Each team is unique in their efforts, but every team and team member are connected by a common thread which is to find a cure for cancer!

Ever y step we ta ke ma kes a dif ference to someone who is battling this disease. Thank you for all your help in making River Valley Relay a successful event. I am so proud to call you all my Relay family. God bless you all.

Who is the American Cancer Society?

We save lives. We are the largest source of not-for-profit cancer research f unds in the world, investing $130 million each year nationally in innovative research. Since 1946, we have invested more than $3.1 billion in research. Our researchers helped increase the overall f ive-year survival rate from 25% in the 1940s to nearly 66% today. Cancer Research, no matter where it is carried out, benefits us all, wherever we live.

We are powered by volunteers.

I n 19 9 7, R u m f o r d Ho s p i t a l received a sizeable donation for the establishment of the Lariviere Oncology Suite. Motivated by his son’s experience with metastatic renal cancer as a young man in his 30s, Al Lariviere was determined to give back to the cancer community in his son’s memory. He was well aware that people in rural Rumford had to travel more than 40 miles to seek cancer care at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

T h roug h h i s a l most t i rele s s fundraising efforts, he brought oncolog y treatment directly to the River Valley community at Rumford Hospital. Almost single-handedly, he raised the funds necessary to open the Lariviere Oncolog y Su ite. I n 20 02, he mobilized his fundraising efforts to replace the outgrown space with a much-needed, larger clinic.

A l L a r iv iere pa ssed aw ay i n May last year following a four-yea r batt le w it h lung ca ncer. Consequently, he was able to gain treatment at the very Center he established. Recently, a gracious supporter of the suite wanted to make a donation anonymously. We’ll simply call him Paperboy.

Paperboy shared, “I suspect that with most of us, we can think back on people we have known who always seemed to rise above pettiness to be fair and decent with everyone. Mr. Lariviere was one of those. In many cases, we lost contact, or they passed away without them ever knowing the positives they left behind.”

Following a recent donation by Paperboy to the Lariviere Oncology Suite, hospital spokesperson Jane Bubar was stumped by the iden-tity and tracked a rather unique story down. “I’ve been in this busi-ness a long time and I’ve never seen anything like this,” noted Bubar.

“Upon learning who the contribu-tor was, the answer I got was, ‘Al always gave more than he took.’”

Paperboy stated, “I was never looking for personal recognition. The story is really about Mr. Lariv-iere, his spirit of giving and what he did for his community. From September 1962 until December 1964, I delivered what was then the Lewiston Daily Sun six days a week. I remember seeing Mr. Lariviere eating dinner when I would come around to collect. He was like a lot of my 60 or so other customers.

“He also owned the Sunoco station at the top of Falls Hill. I used to do business there. I remember buying a pair of tires back in 1965 that he allowed me to pay $10 a week for (the total cost was probably about $50). On one occasion, I had made a payment and did not get a receipt (or lost it). The employee did not record it. W hen I talked to Mr. Lariviere about it, he said that he would take my word for it. That $10 was a day’s pay for me at that time. To this day, I can say that I told him the truth, but he certainly did not have to take my word for it.”

Paperboy stated that he has been lucky in life, but has not forgotten occasions when he str uggled. People have helped him in many

ways over the years and now he had his chance to give something back. He said, “As with any community, Rumford has always had some very nice people. Mr. Lariviere wa s a lway s a n ice ma n who stayed on the high road. Making a contribution in his name, in his memory, in memory of people like him, is something that I hope more people will do.”

From July of 2009 to July of 2010, more t ha n 2 ,0 0 0 t reat ment s were performed at the Lariviere O nc olo g y Su it e a t R u m f or d Hospital. “Al never left a mission

statement per se,” noted Bubar. “He wanted people in the River Valley to have the same ease of access to infusion therapy as his son David had, treatment just a few minutes drive from his home.”

Rumford Hospital offers Dempsey Center programs and a socia l worker two days a week for the comfort and convenience of their patients, close to home. Donations to the Lariviere Oncology Suite can be mailed to Rumford Hospital, c/o Lariviere Oncology Suite, 420 Franklin St., Rumford, ME, 04276.
