    Ou r History

    We began as River bank Crescent S elf-Help Group, a gather ing of 7 w omen who owned small bus inesses in Njiru Quarry. Because they were not qual if ied

    for trad itional banks, but st ill wished for f inanc ial intermed iat ion to de velop the ir bus inesses, the self-help group was formed to address the ir needs. When one of the mem bers needed funds to buy more stock, for example, the money would be borro wed from other mem bers and pa id back accord ing to the ir terms.

    Ou r History

    Later the lend ing funct ions of River bank were separated from the soc ial funct ions, and

    River bank S a vings and was off icially formed. Early on, the organ izat ion was small and faced many challenges.

    At times, cred it off icers were forced to track do wn clients throughout Na irobi e veryday and ask for payments. In Fe bruary 2009 , River bank was off icially reg istered as a S a vings and Cred it Co-Operat ive (SACCO) .

    The Instant Loan (Amka Twende) is intended for clients seek ing a small loan of Ksh 2000/ - quickly and con ven iently.The mem ber must sa ve in a River bank account for 7 days, and the loan is to be dis bursed on the tenth day.

    An interest rate of 3% i s collected da ily over a repayment per iod of 2 w eeks.S a vings must e qual at least 30% of loan s ize and a guarantor is needed.

    Most clients use the loan to gro w the ir small bus inesses. For example :

    Food vendors use the funds to buy more fruits and vegeta bles, f ish, or meat.

    Shoe makers use the funds to purchase ra w

    mater ials.

    Merchants use the funds to buy more clothes for the ir shops.

    Carpenters use the funds to purchase timber and tools.

    The Gro u p Loan ( Imarisha Kazi) is a va ilable to up to two mem bers of a group of f ive ind ividuals.Mem bers must sa ve in a River bank account for 4 w eeks.

    A loan may be re quested for an amount that does exceed 2 times the ind ividuals sa vings and the total sa vings of the group.

    An interest rate of 1.5 % is collected da ily. After 75% of the loan is repa id, non-lend ing mem bers of the group become eligible for a loan.

    All mem bers of the group ser ve as the guarantors.

    The investment plan attracts interest at 0.75% per month for depos its with minimum of Kshs 5, 000/ -.

    Accounts can also be set for Kshs 20 ,000/ -, Kshs 50,000/ -, Kshs 100 ,000/ -, and Kshs 1,000 ,000/ -. Mem ber sa vings are made into a long term depos it, which can not be withdra wn for a per iod of 3, 6, 9, or 12 months.

    Investment prod u cts (Lenga Kikap u ) are des igned to ena ble mem bers to accumulate wealth through long term sa vings.
