NATIONAL MERIT The National Merit Scholarship Program is an annual competition for college undergraduate
awards in which secondary school students who rank at the top of the academic ability scale
are identified and publicly honored. Students enter these competitions by taking the Preliminary
Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test at a designated time during
the high school curriculum. Students ranking among the top 34,000 in the nation are designated
“Commended Scholars” by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Of those 34,000, only
about 16,000 of them were named “Semifinalists.” Semifinalists are eligible to continue in the
competition for about 7,600 Merit Scholarship awards.

These national rankings affirm our philosophy at Riverside Brookfield High School: By establishing
high expectations for all students and allowing open access to a rigorous curriculum taught by outstanding teachers, students can reach their full potential. Visit the Washington Post and US News
and Word Report websites for additional information on the rankings.
STUDENT OF THE QUARTER
RBHS is a place where we strive for “Excellence and Ethics in all Bulldogs Do!” Therefore, we
continued with our student recognition program this year to celebrate the good choices our
students make, from the small daily courtesies to the astonishing, large contributions. It is
important to stop and recognize these positive actions to show our appreciation and to inspire
others to follow suit. In order to become a Student of the Quarter, each student had to earn the
admiration of the teachers from a specific department by excelling in two areas: academics
and character. The ceremonies recognized students displaying the Character Counts! Pillars of
Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Trustworthiness, Caring and Citizenship. Each quarter, we honored 10 students representing each academic department, in addition to
Student Building Leaders, who exemplify our values of "Excellence and Ethics in all Bulldogs Do!"
These students were nominated by faculty for excelling in two areas: academics and
character. The following students were recognized during this school year:

increased to 25-35 students every Wednesday,
AST is now sending a second group of students
to do other activities with the independent-living residents. In addition to
their visits, AST also taught one-on-one technology classes to senior citizen

recognized by the West 40 Intermediate Service Center as a recipient of the
2016 SCOTY (School Citizen of the Year) Award. Samantha was recognized for her steadfast
commitment to her own academic success as well as her positive contributions to her school
community through her leadership in and out of the classroom.
West 40 Intermediate Educational Service Center #2 annually recognized students who have
been chosen by their schools as “good citizens and models for others to emulate. “Grades and
activities are important considerations, but only a small part of the selection process. RBHS uses
school and community volunteer service as criteria for selection. In addition, the student must

THE DAY OF SILENCE
Riverside Brookfield High School participated in the Day of Silence on Friday, April 15, 2016.
The Day of Silence is a national day of action in which students across the country vow to take
a form of silence to call attention to the silencing effect of anti-LGBT bullying and harassment in
schools. The Day of Silence brings attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying, and
harassment, and effective responses. The goal of the Day of Silence is to make schools safer for
all students, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression.
The day is a positive educational experience, and it is an opportunity for RB students to
work toward improving school climate for all of our students. For information
visit www.dayofsilence.org.

dedication to RB. Lunch and dinner were served to the day and evening crew as a small token
of our gratitude for all they do to make RB a special place to come to learn and work. There

day, we acknowledge their tireless efforts to keep RB well maintained and truly appreciate
them as a part of the Bulldog community.

STUDENTS CREATE ARTFUL FENCE DESIGN IN RIVERSIDE
Art students at Riverside Brookfield High School transform the fence behind the Riverside Arts
Center.
Article written in the June 14, 2016 Suburban Life newspaper:
RIVERSIDE – The Riverside Arts Center shares its enthusiasm over what a little paint, creativity and
ambition can produce, all thanks to a challenge posed to Suzanne Zimmerman, an art teacher
at Riverside Brookfield High School.
Kim Piotrowski, RAC board member and past president, said in a news release that she recently
asked Zimmerman to invite her students to make a new mural promoting the Riverside Arts
Center.

"We have a back fence facing the Metra train and realize this is prime ad space for our arts
center," Piotrowski said, noting the students came up with over 20 designs, which the RAC Board
of Directors narrowed down to two. "We then asked Suzanne and her students to combine the
designs for our mural. We couldn't be more pleased with the results."
The artists are involved in RB Drawing + Painting classes, and Art Club.

College Board Partnership: Free the Children Service Project
is working with the College Board on a partnership with a Service Organization
called Free the Children. A major part of the group's goals includes celebrating
service acts and encouraging youth to become active, service-minded
citizens. This year, Ms. Czajka is piloting the Service Learning in an AP Computer
Science course. To prepare for this new aspect of the course, Sandy traveled to Africa this
summer to observe a school built by Free the Children. She learned more about the
organization and how it benefits the children of Africa. Teachers from AP Spanish Language
and Culture, European History, Art Studio, Environmental Science and Human Geography will
be looking to pilot this service learning initiative next year.
COLLEGE BOARD'S 100 TEACHER SUMMIT
Math teachers Sandy Czajka and Dan Bonarigo were invited by the College Board to attend
the 100 Teacher Summit December 4-6 in Boston, Mass. This summit, hosted by the College
Board and the National Science Foundation, supports the continued implementation of the AP
Computer Science Principles course. Sandy was also invited to be a part of a teacher panel at
the summit. In addition, RB was asked to bring one of the students the College Board observed
during their visit to RB on October 2. Sophomore Migle Medelis accompanied the teachers to
the summit and participated in a student panel. This is quite an honor, as only five schools were
asked to bring a student. Migle shared her work and experiences in Computer Science
Principles with teachers from across the country.
