President’s Message New playground, new parking lot and soon, new bathrooms! Watch for changes starting in May. There will be Portapotties for a

few weeks and then new and improved bathrooms. We are particularly excited to have the bathrooms accessible for people with

disabilities and hope to also have a new front door with automatic openers for accessibility.

Any ideas for new programs are always welcome. For example, we have 2 baseball diamonds, baseball equipment – but no play-

ers. Anyone interested in booking a baseball game or starting some games for kids or adults? Let us know. Or any other ideas?

Contact us and we’ll see what we can do to help.

RVCC is searching for a new treasurer: can you help? Contact Bev or Carla.

Summary of Riverview Community Centre Board Minutes

(Full Minutes are posted on the website at www.riverviewcc.ca)

Riverview Community Centre Monthly Board Meeting February 15th In Attendance: Tom McMahon, Carla Chandler,

Jino Distasio, Leonne Bilodeau, Lori Keith, Dennis Cunningham, Bev Suek, Jesse Thorne-Finch, Ryan Reynolds, Dan Lett CLER PROGRAM Jesse discussed updates regarding the CLER program, including the future direction of the program. Another event is to be held on Feb-ruary 28th at 7:00PM, to facilitate further community discussion. Tom notes that there is an open house on Active Transportation in River Heights and Fort Rouge on the 24th. FINANCIAL REPORT Carla reports that we have received our operating grant. Alternatives for our hockey funding model were discussed. Jino sug-gested that the Board clarify this for all sports programs. Bev sug-gested that the Board develop and adopt a policy on sports finance and consider the process outlined in a draft Sports Policy sent earlier to Board members. It includes a provision that large expenditures such as that which we have encountered with hockey be referred to the board in the future. Approval of the November and December financials moved by Jino, seconded by Leonne, passed. DISCUSSION OF A FINANCIAL PLAN Jino outlined the importance of a coherent financial plan. Jino pro-posed developing a 1 year plan, with a few 2 or 3 year projects. He also reiterated that we must also address the policies that govern our expenditures, and either clarify or improve them. Bev asked Jino to set up a committee to oversee these changes. YOUTH AT RISK GRANT Tom moved that we approve Carla’s grant application for the Youth-at-Risk Grant proposal, Dennis seconded, passed. SECURITY MEASURES Carla explained the building has been rekeyed and the number of keys provided to staff and volunteers has been limited.

FACILITIES USE POLICY Mike has received a draft from another community centre of their facilities-use policy. He is currently working on refining it for our use. ADMINISTRATION FEE FOR SPORTS Carla has conducted a survey of how other centres charge admini-stration fees. $15, $25 and even $50 has been charged at other centres. Discussion about how this would fit in to our overall finan-cial plan. Ryan and Dan expressed concern about an arbitrary fee. Jino outlined a few possible alternatives, and Carla emphasized the importance of raising $8,000 so that we can be in a financially se-cure situation by year-end. Ryan again reiterated the importance of determining our financial priorities both for the sake of the children participating in the programs and the volunteers who make them possible. ADULT SOCCER Jino let the Board know that RVCC will be taking over the Adult Soccer games, previously set up by Ian Mattey, and they will con-tinue this summer at RVCC. RINK LIGHT ISSUES The Board discussed the problems with the rink lights. They have been repaired over the years but are at the point where they need to be replaced because they are unreliable and not energy efficient. The cost could run up to $40,000. How to deal with this will be considered in the strategic planning session. ZAMBONI ISSUES The zamboni broke down just before the 4 x 4 tournament and a rental was needed. The company that repairs zambonis has esti-mated repair costs of up to $7000. In the meantime, rental costs will be $1000 per week. RVCC does not have that amount of funds available and discussion will continue over the next week to try and resolve this issue so the kids and adults can continue to enjoy the ice.

Ski Trails Are you one of the many area residents who enjoyed both classic and skate skiing on the Churchill Parkway this win-ter? These trails are made possible by our intrepid volun-teers, Jamie Giasson and Jason Playter and crew with the support of the Community Club. Each retracking takes about 4 hours and the Club covers costs, including fuel, equipment and repairs. When a canvasser rings your doorbell this spring, think back to winter and donate to keep our trackers making tracks!

Drum/Percussion Jam with Matthew Lawrence

April 23, 7-8 p.m. RVCC Downstairs

The jam is for fun, it's free and is for all ages. Bring

your own instrument, or if you don't have one, there will be plenty of things on hand to shake or bang on! Some musical experience is helpful but not required. No pre-registration required. Just show up and have fun drum-ming!

Fund Drive Volunteers Needed

Do you have an hour or two to give to our community centre? We need volunteers to canvass about 25 homes each in the neighbourhood for the Riverview Community Centre’s Annual Fund Drive. Our club is definitely the heart of Riverview and the annual fund drive helps ensure that the sports programs, family events and community activities can continue.

You will have April and May to complete your route. It really only takes a couple of hours, and provides essential funding for our club. 100% of each donation stays right here in our neighbourhood, directly benefiting our community.

If you’ve canvassed for RVCC in the past, let us know if you’re able to help out again. If you haven’t, please consider taking on a route: share it with your spouse or a friend. Take your kids for a spring walk around the block and say “howdy” to your neigh-bours. Your club needs you!!

Please contact RVCC’s Fund Drive Coordinators:

Jen Partridge - 477-8035 Heather Patrick - 453-6885

Why Donate to RVCC

Sometime in April or May, your doorbell will ring and you will be greeted with the smiling face of one of our wonderful canvassers. Here are a few things to think about as you prepare your re-sponse to our volunteers:

The community club is not just for kids. If you don’t have

kids or your kids are grown, think about all the other things the club does, like providing space for fitness, classes and socials, offering free computer time, organizing adult athletics, and main-taining ice for everyone to use. Besides, our neighbourhood is better for everyone if local kids are engaged and busy and active.

Every little bit helps. It’s been a tough year for just about

everyone. As one volunteer told me recently: I’ll take change! If you keep a change pot on your counter, and you can only spare a few loonies, thanks for doing your part.

If you can’t donate your money, can you donate your time?

Ode to Spring in Canada

At last, it is spring in Canada. Today, I saw and heard the Canada geese flying north. A sure sign that spring is here at last. It was a long hard winter in Canada. I remember long ago and know it is still the same

The Japanese cherry trees being in blossom

With their boughs laden with pink blossoms in British Columbia. Also, the melted water is flowing down the mountains in streams. Another sure sign of spring. As I am riding on the train as it winds its way down the mountain. How wonderful, How wonderful is Spring in Canada. God’s white mantle of snow is gone. The air is fresh with the perfume of spring. But the best place of all is my own home sweet home in spring

Where I can dream of even other places in the world in spring

Spring comes to us all over the world.

Riverview Neighbourhood Garage Sales Saturday, May 1, 9am - 4pm

Spring is an early bird this year and everyone is happy to see the snow disappear. Many residents have started spring cleaning and, in the process, putting together a box or two of garage sales items. On May 1

st Riverview

residents will have a great opportunity to recycle their used (but still useable) household items that they no longer want, to make a few dollars, and raise some funds for our own Riverview Community Centre (RVCC), by partici-pating in the Riverview Neighbourhood Garage Sales. There are 4 ways you can help:

1. Hold a yard or garage sale at your own home on May 1st, and donate 10% of sales to RVCC. We will do ex-

tensive multi-media advertising to bring shoppers to our neighbourhood.

2. Donate saleable goods to RVCC and they will be sold at a “garage” sale there on May 1st (all proceeds to

RVCC). You may drop off sale goods at the community centre in the main floor storage room, daily to 9pm. Please ask Josie or Sheila to open up the storage room for you.

3. Volunteer to assist at the RVCC sale on April 29th, 30

th and May 1

st for a few hours with a variety of tasks,

such as pricing items, display, setting up, taking down & packing, lifting & carrying boxes & furniture, clean up, driving unsold boxes of goods to a specific location.

4. Visit the neighbourhood sales on May 1st for great bargains on treasures you won’t find in any shopping mall.

Come find out why Winnipeg is known as “the garage sale capital of Canada”!

Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 1st and plan to participate in this super community event, and also to feel

good about having less clutter around. For further information or questions, please call (after Mar. 30) the Garage Sale Coordinator, Steve Lennon 781-6549.

17th Annual 4 on 4

“Celebrating the Legends” Hockey Tournament February 5 & 6, 2010

The Annual 4 on 4 Hockey Tournament was once again a huge success with great weather and participation of teams. We had 16 teams registered this year with 8 in the over 35 division and 8 teams in the Open (Under 35) division. The Merry Little Men team came out on top in the 35 & over division and the Handsome Devils won the Open division (under 35). The Pat Colpitts “Golden Skate” award for “Dedication & Enthusiasm” for the tournament went to Colin and Wendy Nicolson. This award is given to someone who has put in a lot of time and effort to the 4 on 4 Hockey Tournament. Colin and Wendy & family have been behind all of the hamburgers, hotdogs and McNics for the last few years.

A new award this year called the “Celebrating the Legends” award went to Craig Brown. This is given to someone who has contributed to hockey in the community for many years. Craig has been (and still is) a hockey player, and has been a coach to his children and is now helping out with the Jackrabbits Hockey program with his grandson.

The organizing committee would like to thank and recognize a few key people who helped out to make this a very successful event:

Ice Preparation and maintenance: Rob Fields, Gerald Schade, Brent Fedirchuk, Dan Jackson and many others who put in many hours prior to the tournament. Referees and Timekeepers: Vico Fabbri, Jock Rodgers, Dave Taylor, Dave McWilliams, Jeff Bridle and Charlie Scerbo. The many volunteers who helped out in the bar or sitting at the door for the social or with Silent Auction prizes: Lisa Sinnicks, Pat Fedirchuk, Heather McDonald & John, Terry and Terry Welsh, Stephanie Keith, Joe Ciuro, Heather Brown, Grant Badger, Trina Gardner, Judy Jennings, Wayne & Cynthia Faulkner, Janet Ledger, Bev Suek , Leone & Gord Bilodeau and probably more that I have missed! Printing, promoting and selling social tickets prior to the event: Rod Sherwin, Val Weide, Craig and Heather Brown, and Dave McWilliams. Riverview Community Club Staff: : Carla, Sheila, Graham, Nico who manned the canteen and helped out when asked; Stephanie & Stacey for bartending and Josie for cleaning.

The sponsors of this event deserve a big thank you. Without them, it would not be the financial success that it has become. We raised approximately $5000 again this year. We have many sponsors that provide support to our event in many ways, either financially or in kind. Please remember to thank them and also support them when you see them.

We start with a few items in No-vember such as booking the band and starting the advertising but the real work begins in January. Our committee consists of: Craig Brown (scheduling and team registration), Aron Brown (under 35 team recruitment, set up, food), and Dave McWil-liams (ticket selling, promotion, prizes, clocks, reffing ), Dan Chafe (new recruit) and myself, Lori Keith. We manage to organ-ize this event with very few meetings and lots of e-mails, but it is easy when everyone does their part so well. Lastly, we would like to thank all the players who participated in the event and to the community for supporting the social. It was a GREAT EVENT, one of our best, with lots of enthusiasm, excitement and good sportsmanship!!!

THANK YOU from the Riverview 2010 Tournament The Riverview 2010 Tournament would like to thank the 7/8, 9A2 and 10A2 teams and their families and friends for participating in and supporting the fun filled hockey extravaganza that took place between February 16-21, 2010.

The week was full of hockey, community spirit and great food (including Grandma Fedirchuk’s homemade perogies and Margaret Manning’s chili and cornbread). Countless hours of time were donated by the families of the participat-ing teams but also from both adult and youth volunteers from the neighbourhood, without which the tournament could not have been such a huge success.

It was a great opportunity for us as a community to show ourselves and the visiting teams what Riverview is all about. Well done Riverview !!

One of the highlights was the Riverview 9A2 team's exciting overtime win to take the tournament's top prize in their age group!!
