Attackers of the Noli
- Father Font printed his report and circulated its copies

- spanish senators Vida and Pando attacked tha novel during the parliamentary debates
- General Salamanca also came out against Noli
- Marcelo H. Del Pilar published a pamphlet
- Father Francisco Sanchez defended the novel in public
- Don Segismudo Moret read and liked th book very much
- Rev. Vicente Garcia wrote a defense of the Noli which was published in Singapore
Defenders of the Noli
Rizal and Andrade
- made walking tours of the verdant country sides
- discussed topics of common interest, enjoyed fencing, shooting, hunting and painting
1) The death of his older sister, Olimpia.
2) The groundless tales circulated by his enemies that he was a German spy, an agent of Bismarck, a Protestant, a Mason, a Witch, a soul beyond salvation, etc.
- Civil Governor of Laguna Province directed the Municipal authorities of Calamba to investigate the agrarian conditions of their country
- the Calamba folks solicited Rizal’s help in gathering the facts and listing their grievances against the hacienda management
Calamba’s Agrarian Trouble
- friars exerted pressure on Malacañang Palace to eliminate him- asked the Governor to deport him, but the latter refused because there was no valid charge against Rizal on court
- Governor Terrero advised Rizal to leave the country for his own good
Farewell to Calamba
1) His presence in Calamba was jeopardizing the safety and happiness of his family and friends
2) He could better fight his enemies and serve his country’s cause with greater efficacy by writing in foreign countries
The Trip to Hongkong
- on February 3, 1888, Rizal left Manila for Hongkong
- he stayed at Victoria Hotel
