As-Salaam-Alaikum,
Ramadan Kareem! Here we are, back into the holy sanctuary of the best of the months. I, therefore, must say we are indeed blessed to see another Ramadan and I am super excited to welcome you to our 12th year Ramadan Charity Guide 2019 (1440 AH) magazine.
Our beloved Prophet (PBUH) would increase his philanthropic resumé, the most during Ramadan. This is the month that can be highlighted for number of reasons, for instance charity, it shows the best aspect of our humanity.
We live in a world which sometimes feels so divided, Ramadan is a reminder that we are all the same people.
As usual, it was another engaging year for us. We had a lot on our plate and faced challenges as well. But, Alhamdulillah, together with your support, we crossed every bridge that came on our way. For instance, last year just after Ramadan, we had to respond super fast and be vigilant on the field when Moulvibazar and Sylhet districts saw the worst flood in over twenty five years.
Usually snowed under with works yet Channel S Founder Mahee Ferdhaus Jalil had to appear on the screen hosting charity appeals. Nonetheless, we were swamped with calls from you the donors' and supporters who as usual donated generously to help the flood affected people.
Channel S’s most popular presenter Sheikh Abu Sayed Ansarey, a delegation from the Greater Sylhet Development and Welfare Council (GSC) and myself were on the ground delivering cash and emergency relief within 72 hours of the devastation.
Recently, we had to endure the most grievous loss of innocent Muslim lives. Fifty people were killed and 48 wounded in shootings at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. That was described as the nation's deadliest attack. May Allah (SWT) accept them as Martyrs.
Nonetheless, as usual, beside the clouded firmament, we enjoyed a lot of sunshine throughout the year. We could happily share our excitements and would like to express our admirations for many stunning advancements made in our Muslim community such as the progress of the Cambridge Mosque and role model activities of the York Mosque. For number of years both mosques have raised fund only on Channel S.
The highly distinctive design of the Cambridge Mosque has captured our architectural imagination. Besides, it’s destined to add spark to Britain’s architectural imprint. Europe's first eco-friendly mosque, with large skylights at the central part of the design, will be naturally lit throughout the year.
Then we have the York Mosque, first and the only purpose-built Mosque in York which opened its door to a newly build Mosque on 24th November 2018. Back in 2013, it was praised for serving tea and biscuits to English Defence League supporters after the far-right group arranged a demonstration there.
At Channel S we take your donation very seriously. It’s dealt with the utmost care and to the best of our knowledge, we keep hands on approach with all our charity partners. To maintain transparency and accountability ensuring your donation is reached to the intended disadvantaged individual or community.
Alhamdulillah, Channel S charity department’s success story continues. Our storylines jump and without a doubt, it’s the achievement of our professional teamwork. That combines collective initiatives and efforts of some outstanding talents, creative minds and all the participating organisations that together make it so memorable. We appreciate every contribution made and pray to Allah (SWT) to increase our sustenance, bless and purify it to continue to serve our viewers.
Wishing you all a blessed and Happy Ramadan.

RAMADANDUA TIPS
Ramadan is bountifully the most blessed month. It's the best of the months. The words of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala (glorified and exalted be He) the holy Qur'an was sent in this blessed month. In the Night of Decree which has been described as better than a thousand months. Our beloved Prophet sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allâh be upon him)used to significantly increase his worships, giving and making duas in Ramadan. This month presents us the best opportunities to make our duas heard.
In light of the Qur'an and Hadis. We are happy to give you some of the best tips and guidance on how to make the best duas and optimizing the chances of your duas getting accepted.
Always remember the power of dua
The best of the mankind the Prophet sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
“There are three whose supplication is not rejected: The fasting person when he breaks his fast, the just leader, and the supplication of the oppressed person; Allah sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) raises it up above the clouds and opens the gates of heaven to it. And the Lord says: ‘By My might, I shall surely aid you, even if it should be after a while.’” [Jami` at-Tirmidhi]
Dua is very important
The messenger of Allah sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)said: “Dua (supplication) is worship” [Abu Dawud]
And in another narration, he sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The supplication is the essence of worship.” [Jami` at-Tirmidhi]
During the Ramadan the beloved prophet sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) most frequently would say: “Oh Allah, you are Forgiving and love forgiveness so forgive me.”
Remember it is not the length of your dua that matters, rather the meaning and intentions are more important. Aisha radyAllahu 'anha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) preferred duas that were few in words and comprehensive in meaning [Abu Dawud].
General tips
1. Before Ramadan begins, make a list of duas for everything you desire. This can be as long or short as you like. It is useful to place these duas under a few headings to make it easier for you to remember them.
2. Have a list of goals you want to achieve, even if they are small. Be sure to include your goals in your dua list so Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala (glorified and exalted be He) can help you be productive in achieving them.
3. Memorise the dua for daily activities. Do not worry if you can’t; just write them down on a paper or in the notepad on your phone so you have them at hand whenever you have a few spare minutes.
4. Make some dua cards to stick around the house to help your family reap the benefits of making dua. These can include the dua for going out, climbing the stairs, solving unexpected problems, etc.
Dua upon breaking the fast
This is one of the most important times to make dua, so seize this opportunity. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Three supplications will not be rejected by Allah sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), the supplication of the parent for his child, the supplication of the one who is fasting, and the supplication of the traveler. [al-Bayhaqi, at-Tirmidhi – Sahih]
Another dua to consider is the dua the Prophet sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) made upon breaking his fast. He sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said when he broke his fast: “Thirst has gone, the arteries are moist, and the reward is sure, if Allah wills.”
"Pin Code of the Believers"
Ramadan LIVE 2019 | www.chsuk.tv | 6
Etiquette of making dua
1. Have faith that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala (glorified and exalted be He) will respond
2. Start your dua by praising Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala (glorified and exalted be He) and calling upon Him with His Most Beautiful Names
3. Follow this by sending blessings upon the Prophet sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)
4. End your dua with salawat on the Prophet sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)
5. Do not raise your voice too high
6. Face the qiblah whenever possible
Remember Laylatul Qadr in Ramadan is an extremely special night; it is better than 1,000 months. By being in a state of worship on that magnificent night, you will earn rewards of devoutly worshiping Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala (glorified and exalted be He) for an equivalent of 83 years.
This is a gift and a blessing from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala (glorified and exalted be He) to all Muslims because our lifetimes are short; an average of 60 or 70 or 80 years. So Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala (glorified and exalted be He) gave us the opportunity to earn more rewards if we spend the Night of Decree in worship.
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has said, “Whoever stands in prayer on the Night of Decree with firm belief and expecting the reward for it, his previous sins are forgiven.”
The best supplication to say and repeat on the Night of Decree is, “Oh Allah, you are Forgiving and love forgiveness so forgive me.”
Dua is the pin code of the believers. It can do the impossible. When everything can be done the best is to do it with dua. And when nothing else can be done we can still do the dua. There is nothing else that can directly and regularly shield, protect and arm us against the trials and tribulations of the life on earth like dua.

AL QURAN ACADEMY LONDON
Al Quran Academy London is an international Da’wah organisation, primarily based in the UK. Since its registration as a charity in 2010, Al Quran Academy London has embarked on an historic project of mass free Quran distribution. The project spans over numerous different countries in four continents, having so far globally distributed over 800,000 copies of the Holy Qur’an with translations in multiple languages.
Alhamdulillah, Al Quran Academy London has already distributed nearly a million free copies of the Holy Qur’an. We regularly try to extend our distribution of the Holy Qur’an to a wider audience. We are constantly in the process of publishing more translations and so far have copies in English, Bengali, Urdu, and Nepali, whilst working on French, Malay and Mandarin versions. Al Quran academy London’s method of Free Quran Distribution project is unique. At present, we are the only international non-governmental organisation that distributes the Holy Quran through a planned and target based system such as meritorious O-level, A-level and University students, professionals, people affected by natural disasters, and through various social institutions, Mosques and libraries.
• Sponsor at least 100 copies of the Qur’an in the names of their loved ones
• It will be gifted as Sadaqa-e-Jariyah around the world

STEPNEY SHAHJALAL MOSQUE
Stepney Shahjalal Mosque was established around 1983. Due to the increasing demand, Tower Hamlets Council granted permission to extend prayer facilities and by 2002 the land for the Mosque was eventually purchased. In 2005 additional portable buildings were installed to accommodate approximately 800 worshippers, but around 500-700 worshippers still pray outside in the park every Jummah and Ramadan. In 2010 full planning permission was granted to build a new Mosque to accommodate more than 3000 people.
The Mosque is open for 5 daily prayers, Jummah, 2 Eid prayers and Taraweeh in Ramadan. There are separate prayer facilities for women. Other activities include Children's Evening Madrasha, Weekend Madrasha, Arabic language classes for adults, Islamic & Social Studies classes for women, Supplementary & Homework Support classes, Weekend Islamic & Social Studies classes for all and various activities throughout the year.
These activities are being carried out in a temporary building adjacent to the new Mosque being built. As soon as the new Mosque is built we will be able to provide even more services to the community.
Alhamdulillah, since last Ramadan work has progressed well. Although there were some delays, the installation of stairs and concreting of floors are now finished. Currently the work is progressing with the Masonry Package. We now need a total of around £2.5m to complete the Mosque. Therefore we urgently require £600,000 to complete the next phase of works, which includes bricks, block and stone works and making the building water tight.

MASJID-UL-AQSAOldham
This masjid was opened in 1995 following the acquisition of a former nursing home in an area of Oldham that was seeing increasing Muslim population.
This large detached house in its own grounds required very little alterations to use as a masjid with wudu and toilet facilities being provided within existing buildings.
However, the community has grown substantially in the last 24 Years and 250 musalies on Fridays have to read salah in 6 separate rooms.
We a good regular attendance and support at the Masjid
We currently have 3 Maktab classes for boys and girls
We provide facilitates for women to pray during Ramzan
We hold various events and programmes including for children and families
We endeavour to be an outreach facility to our local community
We have developed a very ambitious expansion plan for our Masjid in the grounds available with a vision to build a beacon centre in Coppice, Oldham. One, which the Muslim and the wider community can be proud.
Along with the existing facilities, the new expansion will provide prayer space for approximately 1000 people; this will include a prayer area for women as well as an Islamic library.
We aim to increase and expand the Islamic education and teaching of children and adults, which we hope, will last and continue for a very long time to come. Insha Allah.

NOOR-UL-ISLAM MOSQUE
Noor Ul Islam is a registered UK charity that has been running for 29 years (formed in 1990). Due to outgrowing the space that was being used due to the demand in our services , the Trustees decided to develop its main sites which were separate buildings to have a large four storey building to house existing and new services in a purpose built 21st century Mosque.
Noor Ul Islam has established excellent links with the local community, local authority, Police, faith groups and football clubs, demonstrating that a Mosque should be at the heart of the community.
Alhamdulillah planning permission to build the new premises was given in 2011 and since then we have moved our Mosque and other essential services next door to a temporary site.
By the grace of Allah swt we have completed 75% of the project. Once the glazing for the front of the Mosque and the dome is completed we will be moving on to the final phase of the project.
Due to the temporary space whilst the rebuilding is taking place the number of services have been reduced. Current services include a Mosque, Pre School, Primary School (separate site), Madrassa and Aalimah department.
The final 25% of the project is made of mechanical, electrical, drainage, joinery, fixtures and fittings works.
We estimate that this will cost approximately £2.3 million
Our current appeal is for Kohi-Noor Wall which is a unique donor recognition display which will be located in the foyer area of the new Mosque. Further details can be found by visiting our website.

IQRA INTERNATIONAL
iQra International is a UK registered non-profit humanitarian charity organisation whose mission is to empower and restore dignity and provide emergency relief and development aid to the poor, destitute and disabled people around the world. We are passionate about campaigning for disability, women’s health and sustainable development.
Not only have we seen a major transformation in the way we provide medical care towards disabled children, we have equally seen transformations of lives through simple or sometimes even complex interventions by the iQra Disabled Children’s Hospital Medical Team which was established in 2014.
Most recently, iQra International has launched its first 'Disabled Physiotherapy Center' in Amtoil village of Bishwanath where more than 300 disabled children require much needed medical assistance.
This is the first of its kind and with your help and support iQra International hopefully will be setting up more physiotherapy centers in remote villages of Bangladesh.
It is difficult for people living in rural areas of Bangladesh to access treatment at the iQra Children’s Disabled Hospital in Sylhet town. We have therefore embarked on a mission to set-up multiple local Physiotherapy Centres in different sub-districts of the Greater Sylhet region, specialising in physiotherapy treatment and other necessary medical care for poor disabled children.

AL MUSTAFAWELFARE TRUST
Our journey began in November 1983 on a small scale by a group of highly motivated intellectuals, social workers, lawyers, doctors, engineers and business executives, who had the passion for philanthropy. Since our formation, we have provided medical care, education assistance, food aid, poverty relief, famine relief and community development in disaster areas, war torn countries and many rural and poverty-stricken areas of the world.
Bringing Cataract surgery within reach of the poorest communities in Bangladesh.
We are installing Hand Pumps, Electric Tube well and Deep Dig Well. 200,000 people are drinking the safe and clean water in over 8 countries.
Last winter we distributed winter packs to over 30,000 families as a THE GIFT OF WARMTH.
We are proving meal to Rohingyain refugees on daily basis at Cox’s Bazar Refugees camp, also shelter construction for women and children.
In Palestine over 100,000 meals and emergency supplies were distributed.
In Syria your donation is providing Food, and survival packs and medical camps.
In Yemen we are providing clean water and food specially to the children and Ambulances for the sick.
It is estimated that 75% of all blindness is avoidable. That means 3/4 people who are blind don’t need to be. Put simply, millions of people around the world are needlessly blind because they can’t get simple surgery or treatment that could save their sight.
We are working towards eradicating blindness in Bangladesh since 2009. We already performed over 88,000 Cataract Surgeries and our target is to perform 100,000 by 2020.

Ramadan LIVE 2019 | www.chsuk.tv | 30
Fasting is not only restraining the body from food, drink and its desires. Neither is it to deprive us of some of our comfort and conveniences but rather an opportunity to attain Piety. The Quran states: Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed to those before you, so that you may attain piety.
Ramadan comes to us with a whole host of opportunities to correct and connect our self ’s with our Lord. A month with a great opportunity to polish our character both internally and externally. So the one who observes this blessed month could reach the zenith of righteousness and piety. Indeed this is the real purpose of Ramdhan.
The month of Ramadan is the month of spiritual and physical training. A month in which, the body is cleansed both physically and spiritually through self-control and self-discipline. Just as we restrain our body from food and drink and its desires, we must also restrain and discipline our tongue from its inappropriate use. From amongst the numerous benefits of fasting one of the key benefits that is derived in this month, it is a fantastic opportunity to restrain our tongue from backbiting, slandering and swearing. If one fails to do restrain the tongue from vile speech such as backbiting, swearing and slandering then the fast will become void. The beloved Messenger Peace be upon him said, “Whoever does not refrain from indecent speech and immoral actions, Allah is not in need for him to refrain from food and drink”. (Bukhari)
Allah the almighty has given us our tongue as a huge blessing. A very important component with a very important purpose. Allah the almighty sates in the Quran, “And speak to others with kindness”. This verse tells us that one of the key function of the tongue is to use it as a tool to spread kindness and love. A very soft part of the human body if used appropriately it will increase ones scale of good deeds and earn them the pleasure of Allah. On the contrary, if it is used inappropriately it will destroy ones good deeds and earn them nothing but the displeasure of Allah.
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him said to his companions “do you know who the bankrupt is?” They said, “The one without money or goods is bankrupt.” The Prophet said, “Verily the bankrupt of my nation are those will
come on the day of Judgement with prayers, fasting and charity, but also with insults, slander and bloodshed. The oppressed will each be given from his good deeds. If his good deeds run out before justice is fulfilled, then their sins will be cast upon him and he will be thrown in to the Hellfire”. (Muslim)
Disciplining the tongue is absolutely essential. Use your tongue wisely and think before you talk. Before you utter a word ask yourself the question what impact will my word have on my weighing scale? What impact will it have on the day of Judgement? Don’t destroy your good deeds with your tongue.
The quality of the believer is that they speak less. When they speak it is to benefit others. Their tongue is continuously moistened with the remembrance of Allah. They use their tongue to spread kindness and love. They are conscious that the angels are constantly writing every word they utter. They acknowledge that every limb that Allah has given us especially our tongue will testify against us on the of Judgement.
There are a few effective ways in taming and disciplining the tongue. Firstly, righteous companionship is absolutely crucial and has a huge impact on the way we behave and what we say. Be around people who help you strengthen your relationship with Allah. Abandon an environment where misuse of the tongue is common and apparent. Use your time productively as time is precious. Know that every year, month, week, hour and minute that passes cannot be replaced or repeated. With every breath you release know that a portion of your life has disappeared. Speak less and do more in Ramadan. Finally, Desire for Jannah. The everlasting abode for the slaves of Allah who use their tongue appropriately. The messenger of Allah peace and blessing be upon him said, “whoever guarantees me what is between his jaws (i.e., his tongue) I guarantee him paradise” (Bukhari).
Let this Ramadan be a life changing Ramadan. Where we polish our character both internally and externally. Let us use this blessed month to eradicate all of our bad habits. Let us spend this beautiful month exerting ourselves doing good deeds that will be a beacon of light for us in our graves and that which will benefit us in the hereafter. Imam Al Awza’I stated, “Indeed the believer speaks less but is consistent in does good actions. While the hypocrite speaks much but does little.”

O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you that you may become righteous. (Al Qur’an 2:183)
Fasting was prescribed for all the human beings to develop self-control, God consciousness, love for Allah and greater compassion towards the deprived.
If we look at other religions we can see the believers in other religions also observe fasting in various ways according to their religious faiths.
Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) said: Fasting is a shield from the Hellfire. (Ibn Majah-1639)
Apart from spiritual importance a huge health benefits are hidden in fasting.
Just a few of those are mentioned below to think about the greatness of Almighty Allah SWT.
Rules and regulations of fasting vary according to different religions. According to Islam, Muslims Fast dawn to dusk with non-fasting time at night. During Ramadan time Muslims do compulsory fasting for one month continuously dawn to dusk every day, but other times intermittent optional fasting they observe. Intermittent fasting involves cycling between periods of eating and fasting, ranging from a few hours to a few days at a time.
Fasting has been shown to have many health benefits. I have mentioned below just a few of those:
Weight loss by less food intake and utilising stored body fat:
Dieting is an important way of losing weight. Fasting is an excellent way of dieting. Many dieters pick up fasting as a quick and easy way to lose weight. Abstaining from all or certain foods and beverages decreases overall calorie intake, which helps to lose weight gradually.
According to some studies, short-term fasting may have boosting effect on metabolism by increasing levels of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine, which could enhance weight loss.
Another review found that intermittent fasting over 3–12 weeks was equally effective in losing weight and body fat as with continuous dieting. Furthermore, to lose body fat by preserving muscle tissue fasting is more effective than calorie restriction.
Fasting helps to control blood sugar by reducing insulin resistance:
Several studies have found that fasting may improve blood sugar control, which could be especially useful for those at risk of diabetes. One study with Type 2 diabetes showed that short-term intermittent fasting significantly decreased blood sugar levels. Another study also showed that both intermittent fasting and alternate day fasting have promising effect in preventing obesity and Type 2 diabetes and have similar effect as calorie restriction by dieting. It also increases insulin sensitivity.
As fasting helps to reduce insulin resistance, so our natural insulin works properly to keep blood sugar controlled. Hence, medicine intake to control diabetes could be reduced or even could be stopped.
Fasting can decrease the risk of Heart attack and stroke by reducing Blood Pressure and body Cholesterol:
Heart disease is considered the leading cause of death around the world. Along with appropriate medication, controlling diet and health friendly lifestyles can significantly reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. Some research revealed that routine fasting habit is beneficial for heart diseases.
One study revealed that eight weeks of alternate-day fasting reduced levels of “bad” LDL cholesterol and blood triglycerides by 25% and 32% respectively. Another study in

110 obese adults showed that under medical supervision fasting for three weeks significantly decreased blood pressure, as well as levels of blood triglycerides, total cholesterol and “bad” LDL cholesterol. In addition, one study in 4,629 people showed fasting was useful to lower the risk of coronary artery disease.
Helps to keep body fit by reducing inflammation:
Inflammation is a defence mechanism of the body. Body reacts by two types of inflammation. Acute inflammation is a normal immune process used to help fight against infections whi le chronic inflammation can have serious
consequences for the health. Research showed that inflammation may
be involved in the development of chronic conditions, such as heart disease, cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. According to some studies it is clear that fasting can help to reduce chronic inflammation which can improve chronic inflammatory conditions.
One study of male and female showed ‘Intermittent fasting
during Ramadan attenuates pro-inflammatory cytokines and
immune cells in healthy subjects’. These results indicate that fasting
attenuates inflammatory status of the body by suppressing pro-inflammatory
cytokine expression and decreasing body fat and circulating levels of leukocytes.
Another small study discovered the same effect when people fasted for 12 hours a day for one month.
Fasting may prevent Neurodegenerative disorders and improve brain function:
Several animal studies suggested that fasting could have a promising effect on brain health. One study although was done on mice showed that intermittent fasting for 11 months had structural and functional improvement on Brain. Further animal studies also have revealed that Fasting has some neuro-generative and protective effect which can be treatment and preventive for many neurological disorders such as; Parkinsonism, Alzheimer’s disease.
Also, fasting has positive impact in improving Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinsonism.
Fasting has boosting effect on releasing Growth Hormone (GH):
GH is a vital body hormone responsible for growth, metabolism, and muscle strength and mood control along with many others. Several studies have found that fasting could increase GH levels.
One study in 11 healthy adults showed that fasting for 24 hours significantly increased levels of human GH. Many other studies showed the similar results.
Fasting may also slowdown aging process and increase life expectancy:
Just to mention one study that showed alternate day fasting increased life span 83% in relation to the non-fasting similar animals.
Fasting may be beneficial to treat and prevent cancer.
Based on test-tube and animal study, it is proven that fasting is effective in preventing cancer formation. Another study also showed that fasting is as effective as chemotherapy, although it was an animal study. Further human research needed.
According to the above mentioned research based evidence it is clear that apart from spiritual benefit Fasting is brilliantly helpful for maintaining healthy life.
NHS England recommends 5:2 diets for maintaining good health. 5:2 diet means normal food for 5 days and minimum food or fasting for 2 days in a week which exactly co-relates with the regular fasting habits of Prophet Muhammad (SAWS).
According to Dr. Michael Mosley–author of The Fast Diet books–this eating plan can not only help people lose weight, but it offers an array of other health benefits.
Dr. Razeen Mahroof, of the University of Oxford in the UK, explains that the use of fat for energy can help preserve muscle and reduce cholesterol levels.
BBC also broadcast a documentary in August 2012 called Eat, Fast and Live Longer.
While fasting, around 8 hours later body starts utilising stored fat for gaining energy that is the important health effect of fasting.
Allah (SWT) said ‘Fasting is for me and I will give rewards for this’.
At the end, I would like to reiterate that apart from gaining special love and rewards from Allah (SWT), Fasting has tremendous health benefits. May Allah give abilities to observe fast in good health and with sincere intention. Ameen.
