ABOUT COLORADO SCHOOL OF MINES

Colorado School of Mines is a public research university devoted to engineering and applied science.

It has the highest admissions standards of any public university in Colorado and among the highest of any public university in the U.S.

Mines has distinguished itself by developing a curriculum and research program geared towards responsible stewardship of the earth and its resources. In addition to strong education and research programs in traditional fields of science and engineering, Mines is one of a very few institutions in the world having broad expertise in resources exploration, extraction, production and utilization. As such, Mines occupies a unique position among the world's institutions of higher education.

Since its founding in 1874, the translation of the school's mission into educational programs has been influenced by the needs of society. Those needs are now focused more clearly than

ever before. The world faces a crisis in balancing resource availability with environmental protection and Mines and its programs are central to the solution. Mines offers all the advantages of a world-class research institution with a size that allows for personal attention. With a student body of about 5,100, Mines has a student/faculty ratio of 14:1 and an average undergraduate class size of 33 students. Starting in the Fall of 2014 we will be offering close to 1,900 beds on the campus to students.

LIVING IN GOLDEN

Around Golden

Golden is the last major stop before climbing to the top of the Continental Divide and is nestled between two volcanic mesas and against the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.  Golden is approximately 8 square miles and located approximately 15 miles west of Denver, with an official elevation of 5,675.

Golden was founded in 1859 and was the territorial capitol of Colorado from 1862 until 1867.  It was originally called “Golden City,” not only for being the supply center for miners of the region during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush, but also after Thomas L. Golden, one of the first prospectors to pan for gold in the area.

Golden is proud to be home to ten museums, a scenic downtown shopping and restaurant area, wonderful biking, hiking, and other outdoor activities, as well as the home of Coors Brewing Company.

Denver & The Rockies

Denver is located 15 miles east of the Rocky Mountains and, with the exception of Kansas City, Denver is closer to the exact center of the nation than any other metropolitan area. The 15th step on the west side of the State Capitol Building is exactly 5,280 feet- one mile- about sea level.

Denver is a clean, young and green city with over 200 parks and dozens of tree-lined boulevards. Unlike some Western cities, Denver has a central downtown area. Some of the city’s top attractions include the Denver Pavilions, Denver Art Museum and the Colorado History Museum. A mile-long pedestrian mall cuts through the heart of downtown Denver and is surrounded by a series of parks and plazas that soften the towering skyscrapers and provide viewpoints from which to see and appreciate the modern architecture. Denver is a city with a growing transit system that included buses and a light rail train system.

Just 15 minutes from downtown Denver is located a new 50,000-seat stadium, Coors Field, for the Colorado Rockies, Denver’s Major League Baseball Team. Also near downtown is Sports Authority Field at Mile High and the Pepsi Center where the Denver Broncos (football), Colorado Avalanche (hockey), Denver Nuggets (basketball), Colorado Mammoth (Lacrosse), and many large-scare concerts play.

Denver’s Climate

Denver has a mild, dry and arid climate. The city receives only 8-15 inches of precipitation a year (about the same as Los Angeles), and records 300 days of sunshine a year- more annual hours of sun than San Diego or Miami Beach.

Winters are mild with an average daily high of 45 degrees Fahrenheit, in February. Snow does fall, but it usually melts in a short time. Golf courses remain open all year and have been played on as many as 30 days in January. In summer, dry relative humidity makes Denver feel cool and comfortable, offering natural air conditioning.
