Parade Party at the DeSotoF rom the DeSoto Theatre’s point of view, Downtown Rome’s

Christmas Parade was a toasty event. Families with young kids, witholder kids, or with no kids at all, enjoyed the best view of the ChristmasParade from the comfort of the theatre’s recently renovated upstairsreception hall. Over 75 adults and children enjoyed the sold-out event. They ate dinner and then grouped themselves in front of the windows, oblivious to the freezing temperatures below them. Local restaurantsgenerously donated all the food for the evening: Johnny’s Pizza, PartridgeRestaurant, Coosa Country Club, AYF Grill House, Bow Tie Catering,La'Marie's at Magretta Hall and Panera Bread Co. This event is shapingup to become a family favorite for years to come! «

Gone with the Winda hit in Classic Cinema Series

T he Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation has had a busy fall. Afterkicking off its movie series with a free showing of E.T. the

Extraterrestrial, it featured Young Frankenstein in October and Gone withthe Wind in November. The Foundation held a Traditional Southern Dinnerat the Partridge Restaurant for Gone with the Wind VIP ticket holders, providing fun and delicious fare such as Ashley Wilkes Shrimp and Gritsand Scarlett’s Red Velvet Cake. Re-enactors from the 8th Regiment Bandbrought Civil War artifacts for display, a very impressive one being a replicaof a life-size cannon. The evening at the movie theatre included extras suchas movie memorabilia on loan from the Rome Area History Museum andcharacters dressed in period costume welcoming guests. Showing Gone with the Wind on the big screen at our historic theatrebrought out many memories for people from the community. Darlington’sSam Moss reminisced about watching the movie for the first time at theDeSoto when he was a child. Another gentleman, in his 50’s, accompaniedhis mother, in her 70’s, and both reminisced about the scary movies theyused to watch. Young girls posed with life-size cutouts of Rhett Butler, more excited to see Rhett than to see Justin Bieber. Stepping back in timeto its past as a movie theatre and showing classics is a step forwardtowards the renovation of the Historic DeSoto Theatre. Next movies in theseries are The Grinch in December, Titanic in January, The Wizard of Oz inFebruary and Saturday Night Fever in March. « P
