his year our Gala is being held at the DeSotoon Saturday, June 30. We hope that many of

you will be there to enjoy the festivities. Yourinvitations and information letters will be sentsoon. Now is the time to plan on renewingmemberships for next season. Don't forget that,as a member, you can receive 20% discount onan advertisement in our master program. 30 Years in the DeSoto is our theme for theupcoming 2012-2013 Season. All of us in Rome,GA, owe a huge thanks to the smart, brave groupof RLT members who chose to buy the DeSotoTheatre building in 1981. Keith Finley and JoelJones signed the contract, and after many yearsRLT paid off the loan. Though we no longer ownthe building, the DeSoto continues to be ourhome. So let's celebrate the 30 years we've hadhere, and enjoy the years ahead of us! RLT congratulations go out to our most recentMaria, Allison Cox, who is getting married to WillDolbeer on June 23 at Berry College. Bestwishes for a happy life together!

We extend sincere condolences to TammyChilders and all of her family, on the recent deathof her mother-in-law. May she rest in God'speace. Glenn Bowman is one of our RLT teens whohas been involved with lots of theater in Atlanta. We miss seeing him but are glad that he'scontinuing to learn. Way to go, Glenn!!! LeviBurdick, who was last seen as our CountDracula, is rehearsing for Rome CelebrityDancing Challenge on August 18 . Have fun &break a Leg, Levi! A workday is planned for Saturday, June 16, tofinish moving our set pieces and prop inventoryto Broad Street. Southeastern Mills (thanks toConi Carey) is loaning a truck to transporteverything we decide to keep. As they say,"Many hands make light work", so please let BenPeck, Tiff Magruder or Kim Dixon know if you areable to volunteer. «

he hills around Rome are alive with “The Sound of Music,” andafter you have enjoyed seeing EVERY performance of this

wonderful, classic musical, there are plenty of other theatreofferings nearby to keep your summer cool. We have enjoyedpreparing “The Sound of Music” for your pleasure. And let’s faceit, you can only take so much sunshine, and the air conditionedcoolness of a dark theatre is a welcome respite from the intenseGeorgia heat. So come with me on a journey as we explore othertheatre options all summer long “Beyond the RLT!” Next up at the DeSoto this summer will be RLT’s fourth editionof our popular musical theatre review, “Broadway Spectacular IV.”I helped cast the talent for this production and you are sure toenjoy the multitude of talented Romans who will be presentingsongs and dances from past RLT shows. The show will haveperformances on Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00, and Sundays at2:30 for two weekends only (as is usual for RLT,) July 20th-29th.Please note that this is a change from the originally announceddates. Berry College and Shorter University theatre companies areboth dark this summer. The Pumphouse Players in Cartersville’s Legion Theatre is ayear-‘round theatre, and things are jumping as usual at the Legion. If you receive this in time, you might be able to catch the last fewproductions of “The Frankenstein Summer,” a play about agroup of literary greats who come together to collaborate onwriting the classic horror story “Frankenstein,” and it is basedon historical fact. The last performances are May 18 and 19and the play starts Darlington graduate and former facultymember, Morgan McCrary. Next up for PHP is Ken Ludwig’shilarious backstage farce, “Moon Over Buffalo,” running June15th-23rd. Their next summer production, “Radio TBS,” is ahilarious new Southern comedy set in a trailer park, and it willrun August 16th-25th. www.pumphouseplayers.com Our northern neighbor, Calhoun Little Theatre’s summerproduction will be at the end of the summer, and it’s thehilarious and RLT favorite comedy “The Foreigner.” This timethe production will be for one weekend only, beginning onThursday, August 23rd, and will run Friday and SaturdayAugust 24th and 25th, 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, August 26th 3:00p.m. www.harrisartscenter.com As always, the Fabulous Fox Theatre is teeming with summerproductions. By the time you read this, running May 22nd-June10th, is the return of the Tony Award-winning Best Musicalwhich is still running on Broadway, “Jersey Boys,” the story ofthe singing group “The Four Seasons.” Reba and I saw thistwice the first time it was at the Fox, and I have plans to do soagain this year! Don’t miss this production, but be prepared tohear a few “f bombs” dropped – after all, it is about a bunch ofyoung guys New Jersey in the early 1960”s! Later in thesummer we are all looking forward to the return of anothernational tour of another Tony Award-winner, Mel Brooks’ “TheProducers,” which holds the record for most Tonys won--12!This production comes to the Fox on July 24th-29th. Eternalteenager and amazing Olympic gymnast and singer CathyRigby will return to the Fox in her acclaimed production of“Peter Pan,” and you will not believe this 59-year old performeras she gyrates over the heads of the audience and singsgloriously as “the Boy Who Won’t Grow Up.” Cathy will takeover the Fox August 7th-12th. Following this is the first visitever of a recently closed Broadway hit, “The Addams Family,”based on the Charles Addams popular cartoons. The music ishilarious and we are all looking forward to this visit to Atlanta

August 14th-19th. And get ready for the long-awaited return of anew production of Rodgers’ and Hammerstein’s classic “The Kingand I” Sept. 5th-11th. What a summer! www.foxtheatre.org The Alliance Theatre is dark this summer, but we will be waitingbreathlessly for the opening show of the 2012-2013 season, a newromantic comedy by Atlantan Pearl Cleage entitled “What ILearned in Paris” on September 5th. More information will followabout the Alliance’s upcoming season in the next newsletter.www.alliancetheatre.org As usual, the New American Shakespeare Tavern is continuingwith their offerings of a new show each month. Finishing up onMay 27th is “Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales,” and comingup this summer are “As You Like It” May 31st-July 1st (the onlyShakespearean play I have been able to appear in!), to befollowed by “Twelfth Night” July 5th-29th. It looks like they will bedark in August as they gear up for the completion of TheShakespeare Evolution Series: The Comedies, with theirproductions in September of “Measure for Measure” and “All’s WellThat Ends Well” as the kickoff for their 2012-2013, season whichincludes The Shakespeare Evolution Series: The Tragedies. TheTavern is lots of fun with its authentic British pub menu and Irishbeers, so give it a go this summer. www.shakespearetavern.com I enjoyed the last show of the Theatrical Outfit at the BalzerTheatre downtown so much, “A Wrinkle in Time,” and while therehad a chat with Executive Artistic Director, Tom Key, who will bepresenting a reprise of his renowned one man show, “C.S. LewisOn Stage” for one weekend only, June 8th-10th for fiveperformances only. Tom is a force of nature and a blessing to thetheatre community. I have seen this production before and it istruly amazing. www.theatricaloutfit.org (Continued on page 6)

Currently running now through July 1sth atthe wonderful Horizon Theatre on Euclid

Avenue in Little Five Points is the first of two world premieres thissummer. This is a new comedy by Atlantans Larry Larson andEddie Levi Lee called “The Waffle Palace: Scattered, Smotheredand Covered 24/7/365.” Knowing these two writers and the Horizonpersonnel, this is sure to be a night of hilarity in a famous Southerniconic restaurant. The second world premiere is a bee bop, hip hop comedy byAtlanta’s own Thomas W. Jones II called “Sheddin’.” Jones is oneof the most popular playwrights to premiere his work usually at theHorizon, and often appears in them himself.www.horizontheatre.com Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company is back this summerwith a stage version of the popular Academy Award-winning movie,“Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?” This show will run July 10th-29that the Rialto Theatre downtown. www.truecolorstheatre.org The all-musical Atlanta Lyric Theatre has got lots going on thissummer. They perform at the beautifully renovated Strand Theatreon the square in Marietta, (and now the only theatre on the square.)First up is their production of “Gypsy,” running June 15th-July 1st.Then July 27th-August 12th will see their fun production of “LegallyBlonde the Musical,” which had a long run on Broadway and waseven filmed for MTV. In between the two for one night only on July20th will be the Atlanta Junior Lyric Theatre’s production of“Disney’s Alice in Wonderland.” www.atlantalyrictheatre.com There are no plays or musical scheduled this summer for theCobb Energy Centre in Marietta, but if you are interested in theirconcerts and children’s shows, please visit them atwww.cobbenergycentre.org. After threat of shutting down like Theatre in the Square Mariettaduring these difficult economic times for the arts, the GeorgiaShakespeare Festival is back with a full slate for this summer. Theyjust ended their performance of Shakespeare in the Park with “TheTempest,” but upcoming are: “Much Ado About Nothing” June21st-August 4th; “Illyria: A Twelfth Night Musical” June 6th-August5th; Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest” July 5th-August 3rd; a musical based on the story by Hans ChristianAndersen “The Emperor and the Nightingale” July 14th-August 3rdand be looking for their production of “Macbeth” in conjunction withthe National Black Arts Festival October 4th-28th. Glad to see theyare busy and up on the boards once again!www.gashakespeare.org A little further out in Lawrenceville, the beautiful Aurora Theatre isclosing their season with an hilarious comedy centered around golfcalled “The Fox on the Fairway,” by Ken Ludwig of “Lend Me aTenor” and “Moon Over Buffalo” fame. But hurry if you want to seethis because the last performance is May 27th. Coming up August2nd-September 2nd is the first show of the 2012-2013 season, theblockbuster musical comedy by Neil Simon, Cy Coleman andDorothy Fields “Sweet Charity.” Reba and I saw the last revival ofthis on Broadway with Christina Applegate a few years ago, and itreally held up even today from the original production in the ‘60’s.www.auroratheatre.com Don’t forget that you can find out more about all of these shows, and others, including half price tickets, at www.atlantaperforms.com. Even further northeast, the Holly Theater in Dahlonega is activethis summer. They list “The Sound of Music Mellow Drama” as theirupcoming show May 18th-27th, but I have been unable to determineif this is the standard show we are rehearsing now and presentingsoon or if it is a variation of that. I tried to call but they only haveregular office hours and I haven’t been available this week. So tryyour luck at 706-864-3759 to get more information. The web siteshows a synopsis of the actual show we are doing, so not surewhere the “Mellow Drama” part in the title comes from. Their nextshow is Beth Henley’s comedy, “The Miss Firecracker Contest,”about a Southern beauty pageant, and it will run June 8th-24th.www.hollytheater.com Greenville, SC is one of our favorite places to visit, and thebeautiful Greenville Little Theatre is always a highlight of each visit.

GLT will be presenting Meredith Willson’s classic “The Music Man”June 1st-23rd, to be followed in late summer by a production called“Shake, Rattle and Roll!” and all I could figure from the web site isthat the latter show is something about Elvis.www.greenvillelittletheatre.org And as always, I end my tour with the details at the professionalCumberland County Playhouse in Crossville, TN, where you cansee as many as four shows in one weekend! Playing now throughMay 26th, “Driving Miss Daisy has been extended. “The Moving ofLilla Barton,” about a pastor’s widow refusing to leave theparsonage, is running now through May 24th. The musical“Cowboys” is running again now through July 20th prior to itsgeneral release to American theatres. Opening May 18th andrunning through June 16th, is “Bob Gunton in Walking on Water: anEvening of Musical Theatre and Song.” Bob got his start at CCPand has starred opposite Patti Lupone in “Evita” on Broadway and iswell known as the warden in the movie “The ShawshankRedemption.” Don’t miss this event! Opening May 31st-August17th is a new comedy called “See Rock City,” about the folks athome in the south during World War II. June 7th-August 10th marksthe return of the bluegrass/gospel musical, “Smoke on theMountain” for its 19th season at CCP. And “The Music Man” willalso be playing at CCP this summer, June 22-September 1st. Anew musical about Ginger Rogers called “Backwards in Heels: TheGinger Musical” will open July 27th and run through the fall intoNovember. Most exciting of all, at the end of the summer, a newBluegrass musical comedy, “Golden Boy of the Blue Ridge” willmake its debut at CCP August 23rd and will run through October26th. The musical is written by Peter Mills and his wife CaraReichel, a native of Rome, GA!!!! Cara was here in Rome for twosummers with her Prospect Theatre Company, includingperformances of “The Pirates of Penzance” and “Kismet” here at theDe Soto, and is the daughter of Sharon Reichel and the late CharlesReichel, dear friends of mine, and I had the pleasure of appearing inProspect’s production of “…Pirates…” at the DeSoto! Can’t wait tosee this show. So as usual, there is lots going on, so get out there and support it.And thanks for supporting “ The Sound of Music,” and live theatrehere and “Beyond the RLT!” «
