Karen began her directing career at RLT with “It’s A Wonderful Life” in 2002, when she directed me to my first Roman Award as Uncle Billy. Along the way she has directed “Give My Regards to Broadway,” “Babes in Toyland,” and “Annie” for RLT (winning Romans for Best Show and Best Director,) and founded the Triple Threat Arts Company, who will be offering two more productions in the next two months (see details in “Beyond the RLT) and will be searching for a new home after March. She is very ably assisted in this lavish production with James Willis as Musical Director, Angela McRee as Vocal Director and Emily McKnight at Choreographer. She is especially proud of the hard work of Emily, who has showed signs of creative genius in her dance designs. Casting is so crucial to putting on a good show, and many directors will say that casting is the most important cog in the process. We agreed that RLT has a very good mechanism for casting, since every show has a different casting committee and that the decisions on casting must be unanimous, so that there is no chance for favorite performers getting every role. For people who are trying to get cast, Karen suggests that you prepare for auditions and work on something in your audition that will make you stand out from all of the others. You must be as willing to give 100 % in auditions as you will be if you win the role. Over 100 people auditioned for “Hairspray” and you will see 38 onstage. She also emphasized that another real strength at RLT is the willingness of so many volunteers to come and work in all aspects of the show. So if you don’t get cast, come get involved and join the fun in another way! I asked Karen what are the most important things that she wants the audiences of “Hairspray” not to miss, and she immediately answered “The lyrics to ‘I Know Where I’ve Been.’” We both agreed that the real lesson of the musical is all about accepting people who are different from yourself, and she hopes the audiences will come to the show with open minds enough to understand that point. (This is very similar to the main premise of the popular musical television show, “Glee.”) She also encourages everyone to pay special attention during the record shop scene, because one of her favorite lines is “If we get any more white people in here, it’s gonna be a suburb.” Karen said the biggest challenge in directing “Hairspray” was finding appropriate and talented African-American actors/singers/dancers for the many roles. RLT is not known for shows that give these actors opportunities, and therefore many of these people might not be used to the experience and the time demands of rehearsals. She thinks you will be very pleased with the cast that the committee and she have assembled! (In addition, there is always the threat of cold weather and illness during this time of year, which has not been a problem for this production—so far!!!) Karen also has a lot of hope for the future of RLT. The organization itself has become much more smoothly run thanks to the innovations of the last few administrations. If she could have a dream realized, it would be that the facility could be upgraded to include lots of wing space for set storage, a rehearsal hall and modernized bathrooms. So keep supporting live theatre at RLT and the DeSoto Theatre Foundation. And speaking of dreams, I asked Karen what her “dream show” to direct would be, and she said that ever since she saw it on Broadway (twice!), her dream has always been to direct “Hairspray.” Dreams do come true! « A Visit with Hairspray’s Director By Wendell Barnes HAIRSPRAY Show Dates February 8 - February 17, 2013 Shows are Friday and Saturday nights at 8pm and Sundays at 2:30pm

Our Children’s production, WIZARD OFOZ, had to change production dates toaccommodate school testing dates. (Wedefinitely wanted as many students aspossible to be with us.) Auditions inJanuary brought many new faces to thetheatre, along with many familiar faces.Plans are in the works for an RLT

summer camp in July, so watch for moreinformation as plans progress. Also, RLThopes to hire an Executive Director in thenear future. That person will be working tocontinue our high quality productions, toincrease the size of our audiences forthose shows, and to make RLT morevisible to all areas of Rome and FloydCounty . Everyone involved with RLT isalready doing those things, so it will begreat to have a person who can devote allof his/her time to promoting us. As a Medallion level supporter of HDTF,

RLT is entitled to 10 comp tickets forseveral upcoming events. They will begiven out, first come first serve, so pleaselet the office know if you would like toreceive some of them. «
