Rhino Water (Pty) Ltd, in partnership with Blue Planet SA, offer unique waste treatment solu-tions to the red meat and poultry industry. Abat-toirs require specific technologies to effectively treat the wide range of waste categories, includ-ing blood, solid waste, stomach content and mix of animals slaughtered. Challenges include high ammonia, COD, BOD, coliforms, nitrate, TSS levels, blood and slow decomposition rate of animal waste and stomach contents. Our modular plants treat blood, organic waste and wash water to municipal discharge and irri-gation standards which can be recycled as wash water. Blood is pre-treated and added to the rest of the waste in an anaerobic digester with suffi-cient retention time to allow for further treatment in a waste water treatment plant. The plant in-cludes anaerobic and aerobic zones, aeration and flat sheet membrane technology with sludge return pumps. The use of specific natural bacteria in the pro-cess increases the rate of breakdown of organic matter and contaminants.
