Association fall ranch tour was heldon September 7th, 2016 for their mem-bers and guests. Attendees met at10:00 am ten miles south of Byers,Colorado at the West Bijou Basin,Plains Conservation Ranch. Thegroup was greeted by hosts Ray andDebbie Thieman (Prairie RidgeBuffalo Ranch) and Dave Carter(Willow Creek Bison). The day beganwith registering, introductions, andvisiting with new and old friends.Then, Ray described how the ranch

was utilizing holistic management intheir grazing plan for the buffalo herdthere. The ranch had been subdividedinto 13 paddocks and the buffalomoved based on the grass recoveryprogram. These rotations occur fromthree to ten day increments. DavidWentz (Colorado Natural Buffalo)manages and moves the buffalo on the

West Bijou Ranch. Seven miles of anunderground water system had beeninstalled to provide an adequate watersystem for the buffalo. The grouploaded into a trailer and pickuptrucks to view the buffalo and the

facilities described by Ray. Aninteresting part of the morning waswhen one of the trucks overheated,and the pickup had to be lifted offand placed on a different one. Iwas amazed at the strength and

PRESIDENT ’S MESSAPRESIDENT ’S MESSA GEGEWe finished 2016 and things are still

looking up for the buffalo industry.The year ended with many questionsrelated to politics and the future of theNation, but the demand for buffalomeat ended the year with a certainty ofhigh demand. Carcass prices dippedslightly to finish the year, but were stillhigher than in 2015. Consumers arecontinuing to seek out buffalo meatdue to the nutritional value and thegreat flavor of the meat.

More and more high profile chefsare featuring buffalo meat in theirofferings, and an ever expanding list ofmeat products made with buffalo arehitting the shelves. While the coregroup of consumers who have alwayspurchased buffalo products will con-tinue to do so, we will see new con-sumers reach for buffalo products asthese new items enter the marketplace.Once a consumer tries and likes onetype of buffalo product, they are morelikely to expand out to other buffaloproducts. This is sure to help the indus-try as a whole, it will keep demandhigh for all buffalo products.

Producers and marketers mustremember to remain true to their corebeliefs and their vision and mission oftheir companies. I feel in order to pro-tect our niche market, all producersand marketers must strive to offer thehighest quality products possible.Share with your consumers what youdo and why your product is so great.

In December the RMBA Board metto discuss future plans and projects forthe Association to work on. We havebegun to reach out to FFA and 4-Hadvisors and offer to give presenta-tions related to buffalo ranching andbuffalo production. Our goal is tospread the word about raising buffaloas an alternative to more conventionalranching enterprises.

The RMBA Board also will be set-ting up a few social events throughoutthe year for members to gather andhave a good time together while alsotalking buffalo. We continue to alwaysimprove our Conferences and hope

everyone willenjoy thisyear's SpringConference.

We imple-mented ournew member-ship renewalfeature thisyear throughour website. Current membersreceived reminder emails about renew-ing their membership. They were thenable to renew directly online throughour secure website.

If you did not receive an email,please contact the Association so wecan update your email address to themost current. We still mailed out con-ventional paper renewal notices tothose who had not renewed by the 15thof December.

The use of the online feature savesthe Association time and money by nothaving to mail out as many notices andbeing able to receive payment elec-tronically versus depositing checks.

Leading up to the NBA's GoldTrophy Show and Sale we will men-tion our members who are consigninganimals on our Facebook Page. Wehave seen our members do extremelywell each year at the GTSS and want tohelp promote you and your ranch. TheNBA is actively increasing its use ofsocial media and RMBA is followingsuit.

For 2017, the RMBA will continueto look for new ways to help our mem-bers be the greatest buffalo ranchersand producers they can be.

group effort by our buffalo ranch-ers! A hearty buffalo burger lunchfollowed the tour and was providedby Heart Rock Bison and PrairieRidge Buffalo.

Next Stop: Ralphie - At 2:00 pmeveryone drove to Boulder to one ofthe Colorado University practice fieldsto watch Ralphie and her handlers.John Graves, our RMBA President,met us and shared information aboutthe training and care of CU's mascot.

The Ralphie handlers were introducedand we watched as they prepared fortheir practice procedure. Ralphie wasthe "star of the day" as she ran her rou-tine. The group watched in amaze-ment as the handlers expertly maneu-vered her around the field and loaded

her three times. Lots of pictures weretaken, the traveling stock trailerviewed, and questions asked andanswered about Ralphie.

It was truly amazing to watch thehandlers work with Ralphie and itshows they care for and respect her. Itwas fun to watch Ralphie and her run-ners take her around the field at theAlamo Bowl!

Finally, the group traveled a shortdistance to the Westin Hotel inWestminster for dinner at the KachinaRestaurant. RMBA members gatheredthere for an array of appetizers and a

delicious bison ribeye steak dinner.We were joined by several membersfor the banquet that couldn't attend theactivities during the day. RockyMountain Meats, Bob and LaurieDineen, provided the meat for ourmeal.

Our fall ranch tour was a success!RMBA members enjoyed viewing anew ranch, meeting Ralphie and herhandlers, visiting with each other, andsharing in a wonderful meal preparedby the Kachina Restaurant.

Plans are already underway for the2017 spring meeting and fall ranchtour and we are looking forward to see-ing all our RMBA friends there.

RMBA Update -Sec.-Treasurer Bylaw ChangeDuring the General Membership Meeting at the 2017

Spring Conference, the members will be voting on the fol-lowing bylaw change of the association. The proposedchange is to split the duties of Secretary/Treasurer from oneposition to two positions. Each would be an officer on theboard and each would have voting rights. The amendmentwill be to Article IV Section 2 and Sections 8, 9, 10

Current Wording:Section 2There shall be three officers, who are also members of the

Board of Directors, i.e. the President, the Vice President,and the Secretary/Treasurer. Each of these officers shall beelected by the active members, to one year terms, or untiltheir respective replacements are elected.

New Wording:Section 2There shall be four officers, who are also members of the

Board of Directors, i.e. the President, the Vice President, theSecretary, and the Treasurer. Each of these officers shall beelected by the active members, to one year terms, or untiltheir respective replacements are elected.

The amendment to Sections 8, 9, 10 detail the duties ofthe Secretary and Treasurer and will be read aloud at thegeneral membership meeting prior to the vote to amend theBylaws.

handed out to all Association members as well as attendeesof the 2017 International Bison Conference being held inBig Sky Montana July 4th - 8th. The publication will fea-

ture extensive articles related to raising and producing buf-falo. The publication will be an informative tool for bothbeginning and experienced ranchers. We will offer advertis-ing in this publication and it will be a great place to promoteyour ranch or business.

The Ins and Outs of Farmers MarketsBy: Kyle and Kristin Stodola

Farmers Markets have rapidlybecome a regular structure in commu-nities across Colorado. With 118 farm-ers markets of various sizes alreadyestablished in Colorado, there is a hugedemand for dedicated Ranchers tomake these events happen. An existingFarmers Market will typically average1000 customer per market and withmore people focusing on healthy, localmeat. This gives us Bison producers agreat opportunity to sell our excellentproduct.

The Farmers Market atmosphereallows producers to have a direct rela-tionship with the customer which thengives the producer the ability to edu-cate new customers and also build a

strong relationship with your existingcustomer base. With repeat customersit also opens up the opportunity to gen-erate off season sales and will subse-quently create a greater demand at thatFarmers Market for the next season.

Location is a key on finding a greatFarmers Market. Look at the demo-graphics of the location and the sur-rounding areas. If the market is in asmall town only so many customerswill attend. Each Farmers Market man-ager has their own set of rules and eachcounty has their own rules and regula-tions, do your research before joining anew market.

Most markets require you to bringyour own tables and tents, though thiswill also vary from market to market.

Some spaces are dedicated to theFarmers Market and will have some ofthe basic infrastructure, while othersset up and break down every season orevery week. Also, some marketsrequire a longer time commitment thanothers for their occupants.

By: Larry Higgins After seeing the State Farm ad several times with this

theme on the television it got me thinking about the buffalobusiness, and certain people I know in the buffalo business.

Like when we first got into the buffalo business, and ofcourse, what do they do, yup, they got out! So, after chas-ing all day, over many, many miles we finally get themin......uh, all but one. That was the end of June, and aftermaking several attempts to locate that one cow, we figuredsomeone would call sometime! I think it was sometime inmid-September I get a call from my buddy Ray; he says "Igot a call from someone in Matheson", some 80 miles awayfrom when we last saw the buffalo, "they saw a buffalo in apasture." So we, Ray and I, go to Matheson to assess our sit-uation. After we saw there was no corral near and no way toload it, we rounded up 4 wheelers and rifles, and, well you

know the rest of the story. That is just one of my "beenthere, done that" stories.

There are many stories out there of escapes, near escapes,buffaloes in trailers and in transit. Those of round-ups, sort-ing, getting them into squeeze chutes, which gets me think-ing, I am sure there are some veterinarians who have storiesto tell.

We would like to hear your "know a thing or two" stories.If you have been in the business more than a month, weknow you have a story. So jot them down and email them tothe Association to be featured in our newsletter, and if youwant you can always stay anonymous, as there are a fewstories I don't know if I want my name associated with. :)

Anyway we are a fun Association, so come on let's be alittle adventurous and share a story.

Throlson Foundation Scholarships AwardedThe Throlson Foundation scholarship review committee received such quality

applications this year that the group decided to award each of the students. Thisyear also saw the addition of the Rich Zahringer memorial scholarship fund,which supports those students with a focus on agricultural business and account-ing in recognition of the fund’s namesake, who was a longtime bison industryaccountant who is among the pioneers of this business.

Those receiving the scholarship from the Zahringer fund include Taylor Ballfrom Fresno State University, Thor Burnside from Fort Hays State University andNadine O’Riordan from Cal Poly. Students in receipt of the Throlson AmericanBison Foundation scholarship include McKenzie Beals from the Univ. ofNebraska–Lincoln, Autumn Dunn from the Univ. of Nebraska–Lincoln, EmmaHaak from the Univ. of Wisconsin–Platteville, Sarah Letsinger from PurdueUniv., Amy McBirney from the Univ. of California–Davis, and Toni Rasmussenfrom the Univ. of Nebraska–Lincoln.

The Next Chapter ...Getting Started in the

Business of BisonBy: Bryan RaffertyHello, fellow RMBA members!

Back in June I was asked by ourPresident, John Graves, if I would liketo share our story on how we got start-ed in the bison business. Although Iwas excited to share with everyoneabout why and how we started thisjourney, I was not particularly excitedabout the whole "writing" part. All thataside, I guess I'll jump into it…

For starters my name is BryanRafferty, and at the end of the day I amblessed to come home to two very spe-cial ladies that make all of my lifeworth living. One of these ladies is mybeautiful wife, Miranda, who is alwaysthere to show her love and support forme, no matter how ornery I may be.The other is my precious and incredi-bly smart one year-old daughterBrooke, who fills both mine andMiranda's lives full of joy and excite-ment.

Even though both my wife and Igrew up here in the city, along theFront Range, we have always had alove for the outdoors and a vision ofsomeday owning a ranch of our own,as well as the lifestyle that comesalong with it. Being that both sides ofour family have always lived in thecity, we knew that acquiring a piece ofland, especially along the Front Range,would be a very expensive endeavor.So, we kept our heads down, hit thebooks and landed ourselves not justjobs, but careers, that would enable usto purchase our first piece of property.

Although it was only 13 acres justoutside of Longmont, we felt proud tosay that it was ours and a place that wecould call home. It was still closeenough to our jobs that we could com-mute back and forth, yet still gave us alittle breathing room from the city.Being nothing more than what I like to

call a big backyard, we figured itwould still give us enough room toenjoy the view of some animals roam-ing around out back by our pond,back-dropped by the beautiful viewsof the foothills.

Growing up an avid hunter, my dadand I had always thought how neat itwould be to own a piece of propertythat would enable us to raise trophybull elk on. So, as my wife and I weresitting there on our back deck lookingat the sunset, I had brought up the ideaof building a tall, strong game fencethat could hold in some of these bigbull elk that I had dreamed of one dayhaving. Looking over at my wife, sheloved this the idea of raising elk, but

we both knew that the rules and regu-lations of having such an animalwould be very strict and most likelyfrowned upon. The next day I was offto the races reading everything I couldonline about elk ranching. I called andspoke with many different elk ranchersabout the pros and cons of the busi-ness, as well as ordering an elk pro-ducer's handbook. (Just like the NBA'sbison handbook) To make a long storyshort, there seemed to be a pattern withmany of the ranchers I had spokenwith, most of them had pointed outthat the Division of Wildlife was not

keen on ranchers having elk.Unfortunately, it boiled down toMiranda and I not wanting to take achance on investing all this money intoelk with the high probability of theDOW eventually coming in and com-pletely slaughtering our future herd totest for chronic wasting disease.

That being said, we began to think ofthe next best animal to raise on oursmall piece of land. Come to find out,we couldn't have picked a better ani-mal to roam around out back.Something that was native to theplains, and could withstand the heat ofthe summer and the freezing tempera-tures of the winter. Something thatcould efficiently turn our grass intomeat, and would give us pride in rais-ing. What better a beast than ourrecently accredited national mammal,the BISON!

As with the elk, I researched asmuch as I could and started callingmany bison ranchers, many of whomare members of the RMBA! The feed-back that I received was much morepositive than the elk route and, as wehave come to learn, is a very tight knitgroup of people that are there to offerany help they can to new prospectingbison producers. We learned a lot fromattending the NBA winter conferencein Denver as well as the spring confer-ence that the RMBA puts on.

One of the main concerns that wehad, especially with the small acreage,

was the fence. This was mostly due tothe fact that we seemed to keep hearingthat bison needed a very stout fence.So, stout it was! After having a visitfrom the fire department (welding slagcatches grass on fire rather quickly!),completing over 4,000 welds, andtightening ten strands of high tensileover 7 feet high we had not only abison fence, but something that lookedlike it was from Jurassic Park! Thefunny thing is, after having our smallherd for almost a couple years now, Ican honestly say that as long as they have plenty of food and water, the

bison seem to not bother the fence. Ifeel that I may have gone a bit over-board with my fence, but if there isever a chance that they do want to getout, or two bulls get to fighting, theywill have to produce a massive amountof kinetic energy to bust throughalmost 100,000 pounds of high tensilestrength. Funny thing is, it will mostlikely be used in the near future to holdin some horses. Why, you might ask?This is because we are set to close on

our new house in Berthoud with 80acres that our family and bison canenjoy! We can't wait to set up our newPowder River bison working equip-ment so that we, too, can load up ouranimals and bring them to auction.

In closing, we can truly say that thebison and fellow producers havechanged our lives forever. We plan tokeep working hard, laying down thestepping stones to eventually owningthousands of acres and waking up onour very own bison ranch!

Plans are completed and the RMBA Board has come upwith a great agenda for this years Spring Conference for ourmembers and Bison enthusiasts.

A great way to learn more about the business of Bison andmeet and socialize with old and new friends along the way.
