    2010 RMCMI TRI-STATE (MT, ND, WY) MEETING RECAP

    The Twentieth Annual Tri-State

    Meeting was held in Sheridan, WY on

    September 16-17. A total of 81 members

    and guests registered for various parts of

    the meeting. Ron Destefano from Western

    Energyput together an outstanding program.Support from sponsors this year made for some wonderful additions to the meeting. Benetech host-

    ed the cocktail hour and the bar. Great hors douvres were available for the hour prior to the meeting.

    The meeting began Thursday morning with a Short

    Course presented to 18 attendees. Phil Patton fromArch

    Western Bituminous Group put this class together. It was

    presented by Mark Alspaugh and Paul Ormsbee from

    Overland Conveyor Co. who spoke on Overland Belt

    Conveyance System Design vs. Reliability. This was thefirst Short Course to be presented at the Tri-State meeting

    and it was well received.

    The evening social hour began at 6:15 followed by the banquet for 64. Ron welcomed theMayor of

    Sheridan, WY, David Kinskey who offered a few words to the attendees. Ron then introduced former

    President Curt Belden withPowder River Coal. Curt is also aLife Member of the Institute. He also intro-

    duced Ken Miller, Thunder Basin Coaland RMCMI President two years ago. Ron

    asked Dave Smaldone,Pacificorp and this years President to say a few words.

    After dinner Ron introduced the individual and company Patrons and thanked

    them for their continued support of the Scholarship program. He then introduced

    the 16 new members. Ron then gave a brief overview of the Institute and asked the

    guests to plan on attending the 2011 Convention at the Keystone Resort in

    Keystone, Colorado.

    Ron congratulated the Institute for receiving the Prazen

    Award the week before in Leadville, CO. It is given by the

    National Museum of Mining and History and was accepted by

    Dave Smaldone, Karen Inzano, and Ken Miller on behalf of the

    Institute. The Award is given to a person or organization who has

    demonstrated a continuing commitment and successful efforts to

    educate the public on the importance of the mineral industry. The

    Tom Canter, Executive

    Director of the National Coal

    Transportation Association, was

    introduced as the Keynote

    speaker for the evening. Tom spoke onUnintended Consequences. Theevening ended with information about the Friday morning technical ses-

    sion, the golf tournament and some additional networking.

    Friday morning following breakfast, the group gathered to hear speak-

    ers: Professor Tim Considine, a Professor from the University of Wyoming, speaking on PRB Coal

    Powering America. They then heard Mr. Chuck Sumner, Technical Manager from Nelson Brothers

    Mining, speak on Electronic Blasting Systems, and the morning ended with Mr. Don Collins, COO of

    Western Research Institute, who let us know how we can Enhance the Goodness of Coal. It was a well

    received morning of presentations and the speakers were thanked for their part in promoting education.

    It was then on to the Powder Horn for lunch and golf. We would also like to thank those companies

    that contributed to golf prizes: Dakota Coal Co., The Falkirk Mining Co., L&H Industrial, Inc.,

    Nelson Brothers Mining Services, LLC, Warren Transport, Inc., and WESCO. For others that mayhave brought gifts with you to share, we thank you.
