Introduction

ROYAL MARINES REHABILITATION TRIATHLON 2016 General The Royal Marines Rehabilitation Triathlon (RMRT) 2016 will be held at CTCRM on Wed 15 Jun 16. Building on the success of the event held at CTCRM in 2015 the RMRT 2016 will be open to all injured and attached ranks serving in RM Units within the Recovery Pathway. Additionally, the Corps will welcome wounded injured and ill competitors from the United States Marine Corp (USMC), Royal Netherlands Marine Corp (RNLMC) and the French Marines (FM),medically discharged Royal Marine veterans and serving injured Royal Navy ranks within the recovery pathway. This event is an impact free competition, which will provide the opportunity for injured athletes to compete in a physically and mentally demanding challenge, within their limitations. On completion of the competition an evening reception including the race day presentation will be held for all competitors and supporting staff. The RMRT 2016 is supported by the The Royal Marines Charity, Help for Heroes, Castle Triathlon Series and Sodexo. Aim To provide a platform for competition to those Royal Marines and attached ranks who are undertaking rehabilitation within the RM, wounded injured and ill USMC, RNLMC and FM ranks, medically discharged Royal Marine veterans and serving injured RN ranks. The event will also facilitate an opportunity for all within and supporting the Recovery Pathway to meet, compete and socialise.

UERI’s, group I/C’s and individuals should attempt to identify their respective competition categories themselves and, where practicable, indicate projected times for the distances they wish to complete. Entries are to be complete online at www.RMRehabTri.com and are to be registered with the event NLT 10 Jun 16. Participants. Participants must be serving injured Royal Marines, Royal Navy or attached ranks that hold a downgraded Medical Category within the Recovery Pathway, injured or ill RNLMC, USMC or FM ranks and medically discharged Royal Marine veterans. All participants must be able to swim 400m or 200m (adaptive) unaided, cycle 24km (upright road bike) or 13km (adaptive) unaided and row 5km on a conventional Concept 2 rowing machine or 2km on an adapted concept 2 rowing machine whether it be individually or as part of a team relay. Medical. All participants and spectators are to note the following:

Critical - To compete in the event, each participant must have their medical consent form completed and signed by their MO/Doctor. The Medical forms must be sent to CTCRM Primary Medical Officer (PMO) NLT 10 Jun 16. No consent form no entry. The consent form can be found online and downloaded.

Advisory - Every effort has been made by the event organisers to ensure the day is accessible to every participant and spectator. Catagories

The race categories have been devised by the BPA specifically for this event to ensure an equitable competitive element is achieved. Tri 1-5 will race on the Gibraltar route and Tri 6 will race on the Trafalgar route. Team relay competitions will be allowed over both distances. 2016 will see the introduction of the Commando sprint event where Tri 6 can opt to race on the Gibralter route in Tri 6 classication race. The event organisers will have the final decision regarding the eligibility of individuals for competition groupings. The guide below states the technical and functional description for each grouping. Where athletes are unsure of which grouping to compete in, a brief review can be undertaken with the organisers prior to the event. Please note this is not a Paralympic Classification. If you would like to pursue classification for Para Rowing or Para Triathlon, this can be arranged following the event. The competition categories are as follows:

TRI 1 For those who can only use arms and shoulders - no legs/ trunk (e.g. VERY high bilateral amputees, spinal injuries (those who rely on a wheelchair etc).

Unable to pass a long sit test, if you sit with your legs straight out in front and your

arms straight out at shoulder height, can lean forwards 45⁰ and backward 45⁰.

Unable to do a standing squat.

Equipment: Hand bike, upright rowing seat with lap, pelvic and chest strap (hand grips allowed if grip impaired, eg. Active Hands).

TRI 2 For severe leg impairments, with trunk function including bilateral amputees with long residual femur etc.

Unable to do a standing squat.

Cannot propel on sliding seat of rowing machine.

Tested with and without prosthetics.

Equipment: Hand bike, flat seat (static) with lap strap x2 (hand grips allowed if grip impaired, eg. Active Hands).

TRI 3 Upper limb impairments only: i.e. above elbow amputee, nerve damage to upper limbs etc.

For single upper limb amputees, we will provide a single hand grip on the rowing machine.

Athletes in this class have full leg and trunk function.

Equipment: Road Bike, single hand grip, standard rowing seat (hand grips allowed if grip impaired, eg. Active Hands).

Page 7: RMRehabTri 2016storage.googleapis.com/wzukusers/user-21750092/documents... · 2016-04-27 · Swim – 200m indoor swim. Bike – 12km cycle (adaptive bike’s used if required) on

7

TRI 4 Use of legs, trunk and arms but with a physical impairment, i.e. below knee or through knee amputee, ankle/ wrist injuries, minor upper limb injuries (below elbow), visual impairment (VI)

Can row using legs, trunk and arms (i.e. standard rowing machine set up).

Can propel the sliding seat of a rowing machine at >half slide for 15-2 strokes.

This would also include neuro impairments with a physiological impact (i.e. reduced co-ordination).

Equipment: Road Bike, standard rowing seat (hand grips allowed if grip impaired, eg. Active Hands).

TRI 5 Triple amputees/ complex trauma to 3 or more limbs.

Equipment: Hand bike, static rowing seat (flat or upright) and single hand grip (hand grips allowed on remaining hand if grip impaired, eg. Active Hands).

Tri 6 - OPEN For all those without a physical injury or minimal physical injury (i.e. PTSD, brain injury or musculo skeletal injury etc).

Equipment: Road Bike, standard rowing seat and set up (hand grips allowed if grip impaired, eg. Active Hands)

Please note that any person wishing to race the Trafalgar Route who is categorised in Tri 1-5 will be able to do so but will automatically be re categorised in Tri 6 regardless of Injury.

The Commando sprint event enables Tri 6 partcicpants to opt to race on the Gibralter route in a Tri 6 classication race.

Individuals who have a single arm and a single leg impairment can chose whether to enter as Tri 3 or Tri 4 (dependent on their injury).

Individuals with a Visual Impairment only will compete as a TRI 4. If individuals have a visual impairment in addition to further physical impairments, they will be given the option to compete ‘up’ – i.e. if VI and single below knee amputation, option to compete as TRI4 or TRI2

Transition Area

Once the race starts, only competitors and approved personal assisters who are racing can enter the compound during transition. Remember to get all your swim gear out of the bike compound before the race commences, as you will be unable to return to the compound until your cycle leg.

Bikes must be placed in the correct bike rack after the bike sector of the race. Failure to do so will result in disqualification.

Each competitor is ultimately responsible for his or her own gear.

Any breach of this rule may incur a time penalty. Penalties Penalty box infractions = 1 min each: Drafting Blocking Illegal passing Unfastened helmet Pulling back in the swim Early start on the swim Stop / start penalty Cycle Course: Report to the Penalty Box and advise the official/marshal that you are serving a stop/start penalty.
