Jackson Memorial Hospital Trauma ICU, Miami, FL (Practicum) 116 hours, Summer 2014Performed all tasks that a Registered Nurse in the Trauma ICU setting can do, from full body assessments and medication administrations to other tasks such as; suctioning, discontinuing arterial lines, monitoring mechanical ventilation settings, performing dressing changes on all degrees burn patients, communicating with physicians, drawing/sending ABG’s, comforting and teaching patients and their family members, withholding medications that I feel were detrimental to the patients (ex: a patient receiving too many meds that can cause severe hypotension or hypoglycemia), among others. I made sure to learn any task that I could not perform.
Mercy Hospital, Miami, FL (Leadership) 64 hours - Summer 2014Shadowed the charge nurse and nurse manager in order to learn the skills needed for such leadership positions. In addition, I learned the importance of prioritization in any health care setting because certain patients require immediate lifesaving interventions and it is the role of the nurse to identify these patients from a list of other unstable patients.Doctor’s Hospital, Miami, FL (Advanced Medical Surgical) 67.5 hours - Spring 2014Worked with assigned RN and clinical instructor to provide each adult patient with skilled, competent, and holistic care that was within my scope of practice. Sample tasks performed included dressing changes, reporting and intervening when I noticed an infiltration, completing full body assessments, manually assessing my patient’s blood pressure when the BP machines were unavailable, and comforting my patients during stressful episodes.Highland Parks (Mental Health) 67.5 hours - Spring 2014Gained a new insight on the mentally ill and was able to transfer my teachings in the classroom setting and from my clinical instructor into the mental health clinical setting. Quickly was able to adapt to this new setting and provide each patient with non-traumatic care and interventions. On one occasion I was able to de-escalate a tense situation between a bipolar patient and a depression patient simply through my use of therapeutic communication. On another occasion, I saw a paranoid type schizophrenia patient steal a sharp pencil from the nursing station and I was able to act fast and therapeutically communicate to that patient, from a safe distance, why his actions can put him and others in harm’s way. Because of my swift intervention he dropped the pencil to the floor, walked away, and the facility dodged a potentially dangerous situation.Miami Children’s Hospital, Miami, FL (Pediatrics) 67.5 hours - Spring 2014Collaborated with the RN, PCA, and other health care professionals in order to provide and prioritize safe, accurate, and competent nursing care to each pediatric patient.
