Brief Details Of Bangladesh
Bangladesh is a country in SouthAsia
About 167 million inhabitants
Area of 147,570 sq. km
About 1,116 inhabitants per sq. km.
GDP of around $1,919 (US) perhead.
Population growth remains high at1.00 per annum
About 36 percent of the populationis living in the urban areas

Road Transport In Bangladesh
Road Transport plays an important part of the Bangladesh
economy
Some 12.5% of the annual development budget is spent on
transport sector
Bangladesh, has about 4 million registered motorized
vehicle and more than 8 million non-motorized vehicles
There has been a continued increase in the shares of
passengers and freights carried by road compared to rail and
water; currently over 75% of passenger and nearly 70% of
freight is carried by road transport
Accident Rates in Bangladesh
According to police statistics, Road accidents in Bangladeshclaim, on average 3500 lives and injure another more than 3000a year.
Other sources estimated road fatalities each year about 10,000to 21,000
In Current prices, road accident in Bangladesh is costingcommunity at least Tk. 40,000 crore per annum (2-3 % of GDP)
Nearly 70% of road fatalities occurred on rural sections of themain highways as the metropolitan cities accounted for only about20%
Over 80% of fatalities are vulnerable road users e.g.pedestrian, bicyclists & motorcyclists.

ACCIDENT RESEARCH INSTITUTE
(ARI), BUET
Brief History
The only national institute in Bangladesh which conductsscientific research on road safety
Formerly known as accident research centre (ARC) which wasestablished in 2003
Launched as an institute with its organogram and rules-regulations in 2007
Approved by the syndicate of BUET in its 418th meeting held on12 January 2008 following the recommendation of the financecommittee on 08/01/2008
Contributing to the national decision making and strategic actionsto reduce the road crash in Bangladesh
VISION
“We are committed to achieve
sustainable safer transportation for all
users in Bangladesh through excellence in
road safety research, crash investigation
and safety education “
Objectives of ARI
Maintain a comprehensive accident and injury database
Ascertain the causes and factors of accidents and injuries
Develop accident countermeasures and safety interventions on the
basis of scientific studies and engineering knowledge

Project 1: “Speed Enforcement, Incident Detection and
Emergency Management System for Safer Bangladesh
National Highways”Main objectives of the project are:
To reduce the road accidents by controlling over speeding of the driversthrough punitive ticketing based on auto recording by radar speedenforcement camera
To reduce the accident casualties by emergency response and rescuesystem based on digital communication.
To monitor risky behaviors like dangerous overtaking, over speeding andtake on site actions against responsible drivers.
To ensure digital monitoring system of the roads at adverseweather, nighttime and other critical environmental conditions
To reduce the traffic congestion and other risky activities by managingroad and traffic system form a Operation Control Center (OCC)cooperation with field road monitoring officers

The Way Forward
Improvement of road safety is a multi-
disciplinary task and does not occur by itself.
Road accidents are problems that cover many
sectors (social, health and economic), which
can only be tackled effectively if the state takes
a leading role and responsibility with due
commitment.
Government of Bangladesh
worked hard to bring down to
half the number of casualties
in road accidents by 2020.
