Introduction

Traffic accidents cause serious threat to human life worldwide,

Traffic fatalities nowadays compete deaths diseases such as

heart disease and cancer.

Jordan is considered one of the top countries worldwide in

terms of having higher number of traffic accidents involving

fatalities and injuries. In 2014 were left (688) fatalities and

(2063) Seriously injured

Estimated cost of traffic accidents about 238 million (JD) in

2014.

every 5.13 minutes Approximately a traffic accident occurs

Approximately every 35.54 minutes, a person is injured in a traffic accident

Approximately every 13 hours, a person is killed in a traffic accident

every 2.28 hours ,a pedestrians accident occurs.

Recorded Age category (+60) and (3-5), the highest rate of pedestrian fatalities (16.47%) and (10.20%), respectively.

And Age category (27-29) the highest percentage (11.98%) of the fatalities of drivers.

And recorded Age category (0-2), the highest percentage (14.81%) of the fatalities of the passengers.

A National Transport Safety Program in place within the Long Term National

Transport Strategy (LTNTS).

A Traffic Safety Plan (2013 - 2017) prepared by traffic police, which targets

the reduction of road traffic crashes (20%).

EuroMed Transport Project: Funded by EU and targets actions related to

Safety & Security specifically in Land through implementing a Regional

Action Plan (RTAP) 2014-2020.

Legislation (Traffic Law, Transport Law, Regulation of Affairs of Transport

Accident, Instructions of Investigation of Transport Accident).

Road Safety Efforts

Studying the most dangerous intersections and road sections, in cooperation

with the Traffic Police and other agencies, and finding safety-enhancing

solutions, such as traffic signals, crosswalks, pedestrian bridges and

pedestrian tunnels.

Applying intelligent traffic control and management systems (ITS)

(E-kroka system, violation using Personal Digital Assistant, Speed cameras

(fixed and removable),Automatic vehicle location, Geographic Information

System).

Participating in traffic safety awareness campaigns, in cooperation with

other agencies and non-governmental organizations, such as the Hikmat

Road Safety Organization and the Royal Health Awareness Society (KAFA

Program).

Road Safety Challenges

Large growth of vehicles ownership 1 vehicle \ 12 persons in 1985 while 1 vehicle\ 5 Persons in 2014.

Aggressive driving behavior

Lack of safe roads design and routine maintenance

Poor protection for pedestrians

Children, youths and elderlies are the most affected

Public transportation is the less safe transport mode

Driving without a driving license still widespread

Poor operating conditions in the trucking sector

Road Safety in Jordan

Activate the Supreme Council for Road Safety (SCRS),which was set up in

2008 under the Ministry of Interior, including all relevant stakeholders.

SCRS will take the lead on setting up policies, overseeing all areas of traffic

safety in terms of the preparation of plans and programs, the development

of specific design standards of roads, and examination of drivers, in addition

to traffic awareness.

Invite all key stakeholders at least once a year to discuss nationwide road

safety problems in view of international best practices and national

priorities.

Assistance from the UN, Special Envoy, Agencies is requested.
