Road to recovery The generous community spirit we know today was alive and well 100 years ago. As supplies started to arrive, the people of Mackay came together and began the task of cleaning up and rebuilding. Recovery meant the repair of many roads, rail lines and importantly the rebuilding of the Sydney Street Bridge. It also meant re-floating the ships that had run aground and replacement of telephone cables. Materials were salvaged and building repairs began as the mud and debris within was removed. Many farmers had to begin again after surveying the damage to crops, livestock and land. What emerged after the storm was a beautiful city that showed resilience and a determination to prosper and grow.

The generous community spirit we know today was alive and well 100 years ago.
