BISON SOCCER 2005 18 2004 REVIEW Road Warriors Flight 5,518 miles. Bus 9,884 miles. The North Dakota State women’s soccer team went the extra mile in 2004. Literally. The Bison traveled over 15,000 miles their first sea- son of Division I soccer. To put that number into perspective, it’s equal to driving from New York to Los Angeles five times, with miles to spare. All 17 games scheduled in 2004 saw NDSU playing away from home. It was a season that saw a promising beginning to a new future of soccer at NDSU. Pete Cuadrado began his second season as head coach. This season offered a wide array of challenges that he didn’t see in his first year when he led the Bison to a 11-3-2 cam- paign. The Bison returned seven starters and 11 letterwinners from the 2003 squad and wel- comed nine new faces to the team. The Bison’s leading scorer in Jessica Rodgers returned, along with 2003 defensive player of the year, Brooke Hartman. NDSU also had the services of midfielder Carly Christensen and forward Ol- ivia Cole, both back from injuries that cut short their seasons last year. Hartman, Christensen and Cole were selected as captains for the 2004 season. The Bison opened play with three exhibi- tion games. First, NDSU traveled to Brookings, S.D. to face former North Central Conference foe and fellow independent South Dakota State. Sophomore Sarah Panzer and junior Rodgers each notched goals in NDSU’s 2-0 shutout of the Jackrabbits on Aug. 15. NDSU’s next two exhibitions at the Ellig Sports Complex would be the only time the team would play in front of a home crowd all season. Behind the strength of Rodgers’ two goals, NDSU edged the University of Mary 2-1 on Aug. 19. The Bison completed their dress rehearsal for the season perfect after dominating Minneso- ta-Crookston 12-0 on Aug. 22. Angie Sten- son scored four goals, Cole three and Panzer notched four assists in the win. On the opening weekend of play, North Dakota State traveled to IPFW and Wisconsin- Green Bay. Despite freshman Kelsey Hohol’s inaugural Division I goal, the Bison fell 2-1 in overtime to the Mastodons on Aug. 27. NDSU couldn’t muster any scoring against UWGB and was shut out 3-0 on Aug. 29. Goal- keeper Katie Stombaugh stopped six shots against the Phoenix. Stombaugh was pressed into duty after returning goalkeeper Jessica Nei went down with a season ending-knee injury before the season began. North Dakota State freshman Jami Rozell scored two goals in the Bison’s 3-3 tie with Western Illinois on Sept. 3. In the 83rd minute, Parker thought she had the game-winner for the Bison, only to see the Westerwinds score with just 5 seconds remaining to force overtime. Rozell was tabbed co-Newcomer of the Week in Division I indepen- dent soccer for her two-goal effort. The Bison’s first-ever Division I win occurred on Sept. 5 against Drury. Christensen played the spoiler in overtime as she scored as a result of a perfect Panzer corner kick to give NDSU a 2-1 victory. Christensen also assisted on Rodg- ers’ equalizing goal in the contest. Kelli Reed posted the victory in goal in NDSU’s come-from- behind win. The Big Ten Conference and nationally ranked Wisconsin Badgers were up next for the Bison on Sept. 10. NDSU played wire-to-wire with Wisconsin and trailed only by one goal with 10 minutes remaining. Despite a last minute effort, NDSU fell 3-0. Rodgers hammered home two goals in NDSU’s 2-1 triumph over Northern Iowa on Sept. 12. Rodgers broke free of the Panther’s defense early in the second half and scored the game-winner on a breakaway to give NDSU its second victory of the season. North Dakota State traveled to Omaha, Neb., to participate in the Creighton Bluejay Classic on Sept. 24 and 26. First, the Bison played host Creighton and battled into another overtime game before a crowd of 953. True freshman Michelle Martinez scored the Bison’s lone goal late in the second half to send the game into overtime. The Bison met South Dakota State again in NDSU’s second match of the tournament. Behind goals from Christensen and Panzer, NDSU held its opponents scoreless for the first time in 2004. Stombaugh and Reed combined on the shutout. Christensen and Hartman were selected to the Creighton Bluejay Classic all- tournament team. A trip to the state of Indiana was slated next on the schedule, with the Bison visiting Valparaiso, IUPUI and Butler in a three-match swing. Despite outshooting the Crusaders, NDSU fell 1-0 to Valparaiso on Oct. 8. The Bison took an early lead against IUPUI behind Martinez’s first half goal, but gave up two goals late in the contest to fall 2-1 on Oct. 10. The following day, two freshmen scored goals to lift NDSU over Butler in a hard-fought

Road Warriors Flight 5,518 miles. Bus 9,884 miles. The North Dakota State women’s soccer team went the extra mile in 2004. Literally. The Bison traveled over 15,000 miles their fi rst sea-son of Division I soccer. To put that number into perspective, it’s equal to driving from New York to Los Angeles fi ve times, with miles to spare. All 17 games scheduled in 2004 saw NDSU playing away from home. It was a season that saw a promising beginning to a new future of soccer at NDSU.

Pete Cuadrado began his second season as head coach. This season offered a wide array of challenges that he didn’t see in his fi rst year when he led the Bison to a 11-3-2 cam-paign. The Bison returned seven starters and 11 letterwinners from the 2003 squad and wel-comed nine new faces to the team. The Bison’s

2004 REVIEWbattle. Martinez and Hohol scored goals to carry the Bison to their fourth win on the season. Reed was instrumental in goal, recording seven saves to post the win. Martinez was honored as the Newcomer of the Week in independent soc-cer for her heroics over the three-game span. Christensen and Rodgers scored second-half goals to lead NDSU past Carroll College in the fi rst round of the Northern Colorado Best Western Regency Classic on Oct. 15. Reed stopped eight Fighting Saints shots and earned the shutout in Greeley, Colo. NDSU ventured into its record-breaking fi fth overtime match of the season against North-ern Colorado on Oct. 17, in the UNC Classic championship. Rodgers’ fi fth goal of the season pushed the game into extra time, but the Bison fell 2-1. Rodgers, Rozell and Reed were named to the all-tournament team for outstanding play over the weekend. The Missouri Valley Conference regular-season champion Drake hosted the Bison on Oct. 22. Three fi rst-half goals were too much to overcome for the Bison as they fell 3-1 to the Bulldogs. Christensen recorded NDSU’s lone goal in the defeat. The schedule didn’t get any kinder with NDSU traveling to Big Ten Minnesota next on Oct. 24, for the Gopher’s homecoming. The teams played to a fi rst-half standstill with fresh-man sensation Martinez blasting her fourth goal of the season. The Gophers laced two

second-half goals to seal the victory. NDSU’s lone senior Hartman was honored before kickoff with a large contingent of Bison faithful on hand for senior day. The Bison ended the season with two games on the West Coast. In a tale of two halves, NDSU dominated play against UC Davis on Nov. 5 for the fi rst 45 minutes, highlighted by a Martinez goal, only to see its lead disappear in the second half. The Bison fell 2-1 to the Aggies and suffered their fourth straight loss. In the season fi nale, the Bison met Cal State-Hayward. The Pioneers handed NDSU a 2-1 setback. It was the Bison’s seventh one-goal loss on the season. Martinez scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season in a losing effort. North Dakota State fi nished its fi rst year of Division I competition with a 5-11-1 record. The Bison defense allowed only 1.75 goals per game in a season where NDSU was noted by oppos-ing coaches for its aggressive play. Rodgers led the team in scoring for a second consecutive season, tallying 14 points on fi ve goals and four assists. Martinez took advantage of playing time in the second half of the season and scored 12 points on six goals. Christensen also fi nished in double digits in scoring with 10 points on four goals and two assists. Christensen was named fi rst team all-inde-pendent. Hartman earned second-team honors.

She and Cole were nominated to the independent soccer all-academic team. The academic awards didn’t stop there for NDSU. Hartman was named to the CoSIDA All-District VII fi rst team for the second consecutive year. Cole and Panzer joined her on the second team. Hartman was then honored nation-ally, earning a spot on the

ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America second team. Hartman wrapped up an impressive career for NDSU. The pharmacy major started in 57 of 58 career games for the Bison and led a defense that only allowed 1.61 goals per game in her standout career. North Dakota State and coach Pete Cuadra-do’s fi rst season of Division I soccer provided a great learning experience for bigger and better things to come. NDSU’s all-road schedule in 2004 will pay dividends for bringing top Division I talent to Fargo in 2005 and beyond.
