ROAD SLOPE STABILITY

DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS AND HIGHWAYSCordillera Administrative RegionRoad slope

SLOPEInmathematics, theslopeorgradientof alineis a number that describes both thedirectionand thesteepnessof the line. Slope is often denoted by the letterm.

Thedirectionof alineis either increasing, decreasing, horizontal or vertical. A line isincreasingif it goesuptowards the right. The slope ispositive, i.e. A line isdecreasingif it goesdowntowards the right. The slope isnegative, i.e. If a line is horizontal the slope iszero. This is aconstant function. If a line is vertical the slope isundefined(see below).

STABILITY- the quality, state, or degree of beingstable: asthe strength to stand or endure:FIRMNESSthe property of a body that causes it when disturbed from a condition of equilibrium or steady motion to develop forces or moments that restore the original conditionresistance to chemical change or to physical disintegration

Natural disaster and man-made disaster? What is Natural Disaster?

What is Man-made Disaster?

NATURAL DISASTERA natural disaster is a major adverse event resulting from natural processes of the Earth; examples include floods, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, and other geologic processes. It can cause loss of life or property damage, and typically leaves some economic damage in its wake, the severity of which depends on the affected population's resilience, or ability to recover.

MAN-MADE DISASTERMan-made disaster is a disastrous event caused directly and principally by one or more identifiable deliberate or negligent human actions. Also called human-made disaster.

A case studyA story.

There was an old mountainous road........

And it was very narrow. Due to the numerous complaints the Governor received from his constituents, he decided on implementing a widening project on the said road section.

The project was then implemented which primarily involved cutting of the mountain slope and road widening. The project was completed by the Contractor as planned thereby leaving the cut slope bare.

One year later, during rainy season, the slope suddenly collapsed and it took a heavy toll on that particular road section and the public as well because of massive landslide that rendered the road closed for days. Are natural mountain slopes are stable? The Earth was created 4,600,000,000 years ago.The Earth surface such as mountains have experienced a lot of natural disastrous events. After an event of failure, for instance collapsed slope, it generally becomes stable as compared to its original state. Therefore, natural slopes are basically stable...(except for some special cases)

What triggers slope failures? What do you think are the factors that trigger slope failure?

And, why do you think so?

The supposed triggers:Narrow old mountainous road?Residents complaints?Governors decision?Widening Project?Cut slope?Contractor?Rainy SeasonRoad user groups encountered the slope failure

End of PresentationTHANK YOU!
