Course Goals
• Use the Materials of Music to identify, define, analyze and discuss different musical styles.
• Recognize and describe the major characteristics of various styles of music.
• Identify examples of outstanding music from a variety of historic periods and cultures.
• Recognize and describe the role and influence of music in other areas of life throughout history.
• Identify ways culture has affected music and ways music has affected culture.
• Begin to understand the effect of music on social issues in the world and vice versa.

• Materials of Music (melody, rhythm, harmony, texture, etc.)
• Music Copyright (YouTube, downloading)
• Music of the World• Music and Politics/Social Issues• Critiquing musical performances• Music in Movies and Television• Music and Culture
Course Design
• Project Based Curriculum• Teacher lecture/activities followed by a
unit project, group or individual
• Participation• Large percentage of the quarter grade
Course Requirements
• Notebook• Folder/Binder• i-pod or MP3 device
Grading
• Point-based system- each task, assessment, project, or goal is assigned a point value. • Participation 25/30• Project 65/70• Quiz 18/20• Homework 20/20• Music Review 48/50
• To determine student’s grade, add the student’s scores together and divide by the total possible points
• 176/190 = .926 = 93%
Music Review
• Each quarter, students must attend one live musical event:• Battle of the Bands• Chorus concert• Marching Band Show• Pop music concert
• Provide a written critique of the performance using the guidelines from class• Style of music• Number of performers• Use the Materials of Music as a guide
