He received his bachelor's degree from StanfordUniversity in 1940 and graduated from Stanford University School of Medicine in 1944, where he did his residency ininternal medicine. Livingston served as a US Navy Medical Corps Reserve officer in Okinawa during World War II, and wasawarded a Bronze Star. His major academic appointments include Harvard Medical School (1946-1947); the Yale UniversitySchool of Medicine (1946-1952); the University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine (1952-1957); and theUniversity of California, San Diego School of Medicine (1965-1989). Livingston served as scientific director for both theNational Institute for Mental Health (NIMH) and the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Blindness (NINDB) from1956-1965. In 1965 he founded the world's first interdisciplinary neuroscience department at UC San Diego. Throughout hiscareer, Livingston was active in several anti-nuclear weapons and peace organizations, including the InternationalPhysicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, which was awarded the 1985 Nobel Prize for Peace.Livingston's research has been concerned with investigating combinations of nervous and mental functions, usingneuroanatomical, neurophysiological, behavioral, and clinical techniques. He has published widely in these fields, includingchapters in John F. Fulton's Physiology of the Nervous System (fourth edition, 1960) and a dozen chapters in Best andTaylor's Physiological Basis of Medical Practice (eleventh edition, 1985). While a professor in the Department ofNeurosciences at UC San Diego, he developed the Neurosciences Study Plan for graduate students. He is well known for hiswork in the cinemorphology of the human brain, using a technique developed at UC San Diego by Roy E. Mills whichinvolves slicing, staining and photographing very thin sections of the whole human brain in sequence. The Human Brain: ADynamic View of its Structures and Organization, an award-winning film on this research, was produced in 1976 by SyWexler.Livingston has also made significant contributions to the study of the relationship between chronic undernutrition andhuman brain development, including participating in the Committee for Undernourished People research project. In 1986,the Army Medical Corps Research and Development Command selected Livingston's Laboratory for QuantitativeMorphology in the Department of Neurosciences at UC San Diego to establish a national research and developmentprogram to construct a prototype computer system that would be capable of three-dimensional mapping and displaying theentire human brain at microscopic levels of detail. Livingston also consulted on the autopsy of President John F. Kennedy, and served as science advisor to the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet. Livingston died in 2002 in La Jolla, California.

There is correspondence documenting Livingston's involvement withthe Foundation for Advanced Education in the Sciences, the Foundations' Fund forResearch in Psychiatry, and the Institute for Policy Studies, of which he was a foundingmember. A very rich correspondence covers the period from 1947 to 1952, whileLivingston was a member of the faculty of the Yale University School of Medicine andspent time in Europe receiving advanced training. Arranged in five subseries: A) Capricorn Expedition, B) Brain MappingProject, C) Committee for Undernourished People, D) The Human Brain Film, and E) OtherResearch.A) Capricorn Expedition: Correspondence, notes, drafts, photographs and ephemeraregarding the 1952 Scripps Institution of Oceanography Capricorn Expedition in thePacific Ocean. Livingston served as ship's physician and as a diver for the expedition. Theseries includes Livingston's original materials on research diving, and a transcript of ameeting between Roger Revelle and other scientists on the expedition. Original soundrecordings from the expedition may be found in the SOUND RECORDINGS series.B) Brain Mapping Project: Correspondence, reports, proposals and research notebooks forthe Laboratory for Quantitative Morphology's project to develop a prototype computersystem to three-dimensionally map the human brain in microscopic detail.C) Committee for Undernourished People (CUP): Correspondence, notes, proposals andreports for a research study on the effects of chronic undernutrition on the braindevelopment of infants and children.D) The Human Brain Film: Correspondence, notes, typescripts and award certificates forThe Human Brain: A Dynamic View of its Structures and Organization (1976). This filmdocuments the brain mapping research of Livingston's lab, in which human brains werevery thinly sliced, stained, and filmed in sequence by a cinemicrotome. The images werethen digitized to create three-dimensional images of the brain.E) Other Research: Research notebooks, correspondence, reports, notes, photographsand drawings for other human and animal research conducted by Livingston. Includesresearch notebooks kept by members of the Institute for Information Systems, the UCSan Diego Department of Neurosciences, and the Quantitative Morphology Laboratoryworking under Livingston.
