• Born: 1451 in Genoa, Italy• Died: May 20, 1506 in

Valladolid, Spain• Sent by Queen Isabella and

King Ferdinand of Spain

Reason for ExploringChristopher Columbus was an ambitious and talented

navigator.

He decided to sail west as he was sure that our planet was round.

He believed a shorter route to Asia could be found by sailing westward instead of around Africa.

Columbus not only discovered a New World, but he led the way for other explorers.

He had not found India, but in fact a new land, land that is now known as North America.

Columbus Setting Sail in 1492

• Christopher Columbus departed on his first journey in search of a quicker route to Asia.

• Columbus was sent by Ferdinand V and Isabella, the king and queen of Castile, who sponsored his first expedition.

He sailed from Spain in 1492 with three ships, the Niña, the Pinta and the Santa

Maria.

• Columbus set sail from Palos, Spain.

• He arrives in the West Indies and lands on the island of San Salvador on October 12, 1492.

• He thought he had found the Indies and called the people he saw there "Indians".

• It was America – Central America

Columbus set sail from Cadiz, Spain.

He explores the islands of

Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and Hispaniola.

He returns to Spain in June 1496.

He finally lands on the mainland of South
