The Buhler Gallery, unique in Manitoba, is located in St. Boniface Hospital. Open to all patients, visitors, physicians, volunteers and staff since September 2007, its goal is to provide an oasis of contemplation and vision, engaging people in high visual arts programming, music, readings, and performances. St. Boniface Hospital recognizes the benefits of the arts in health and healing, and its impact on the fabric of daily life and the community as a whole. By establishing this dedicated gallery, the hospital is further enhancing the role of the arts in health. Buhler Gallery in the St-Boniface Hospital OCTOBER 2, 2014 – January 11, 2015 Roberta Bondar & Carole Sabiston: Dreams & Realities —Human Sensitivity of Place Roberta Bondar and Carole Sabiston: Dreams & Realities—Human Sensitivity of Place presents two contemporary internationally acclaimed artists. Working in different media they voice their concerns and delight about our natural environment, exploring the micro and macro of Canada. One does so through photography and the other through textile assemblage, each understanding nature’s vulnerabilities while celebrating its magnificence. Fascinated by flight, Roberta Bondar, a pioneer woman astronaut, has experienced space, and Carole Sabiston, inspired as a child by Sputnik, is concerned by growing amounts of space debris. Bondar’s photographs explore the detail, diversity and magnitude of Canada’s national parks. She captures the richness of the flora, fauna, light and geology in each region, ably conveying the individual persona of specific places. Colour, texture and space become her focus. She uses a variety of cameras, both medium and large format, and continuously experiments with scale and the effects of various types of papers, textured and smooth.

Photo by Roberta Bondar “Long Beach Sunset” Sabiston developed her own visual language of textile assemblage and she penetrates serious global environmental issues. Drawing from past histories, world literature and contemporary commentaries, flight, light, colour and space are her primary subjects. Myriad materials, objects, and text combine, uniting the real and imaginary depicting critical tensions and dichotomies.
