Each of the skippers who have earned this cup have demonstrated sailing skill of the highest caliber, and this year, for only the second time since this cup has been awarded, a woman skipper won–Kirsten Voss Werner. Kirsten was “definitely surprised to win” but is certain that it was a combination of many different sailing experiences on a variety of boats with a variety of crew throughout the 2005 sailing season. For example, her 8 metre crew for Golden Feather, was made up entirely of J24 and J22 skippers! “There is no such thing as a regular crew in my life; basically there was a whole different group every time we sailed. Given just a week, it seemed that 60 people would be called to see just who could be motivated!’ When real young, although Kirsten sailed on her father’s boat, it was never her intention to race; rather, as a teenager, she worked for the Race Committee throughout high school. Racing entered the picture after college and becoming employed. In 1997, Kirsten bought a used J24 right here in Rochester. Built in 1983, PeeWee, had won the World’s Cup three times for its owners, the Van Dorens. “The J 24 fleet was welcoming and helpful and there is an exceptionally friendly atmosphere. If short on crew, there was never a problem, for other skippers were willing to send someone over. Becoming involved in traveling regattas, she met her husband, Kris Werner. Kris, a graduate of SUNY Maritime College, sailed, then coached for his alma mater, eventually skippering his own J24. For three years, Kirsten and Kris raced against each other, before he sold his boat. So just exactly where and how did this skipper hone her skill! Well, her recommendation is to join the Frostbiters. “Using Interclub dinghies, two Sundays of frostbite racing is equivalent to a typical racing season of 30 to 40 races. In this one person boat, 20 starts with short courses and intense sailing, I get killed in it constantly, learning to get badly beaten and be a good sport about it! Every Sunday, almost every sailor out there is highly experienced, so if you want to improve, that’s the fast way to learn!” Kirsten is the third Voss to win the Madge Cup. Her father, Harry, won it in 1985, and her brother, Eric, won it, in 1999. “For as long as possible, sailing smaller boats like the J22 and J24s is my intention. J24s, J22s and Interclubs are painful boats to race, but the racing is much more intense and more fun!” Turn to page 6 and 7 for more Cups and Flags and Props and Shafts award winners! 5555 St. Paul Boulevard • Rochester, New York 14617 • 585-342-5511 Kirsten Voss Werner… 2005 Madge Cup Recipient

Dear Fellow Members:

November has been a busy month! TheFinance Committee and the Board havecarefully scrutinized the variouscommittee budget submissions. Weconsidered what appeared to bereasonable and approved a budget of$2,126,677, including $341,000, incapital expenditures to pay forimprovements to the RYC infrastructure.

Our income was anticipated to be $1,723,359, with no dues orfees increase, which when compared to the expenditures, lefta deficit of $400,000 +, an unacceptable position. A duesincrease was obviously necessary. But how much? The Boardand Finance Committee held several combined meetings todiscuss options, including the possibility of an assessment. Finally, we decided to borrow $300,000, and to raise the duesby 10% and the boat storage fees by 5%.

The dues and fees increase would bring in an additional $130, 262 – to be used to pay for debt service incurred by theborrowing ($60,000); increase in operating expenses such asheating costs, insurance, wages, etc. ($23,000); and additional

funds for capital expenditure if warranted and feasible, of$41,000. John Miraglia, our treasurer, is negotiating withour lender, M & T Bank, for the most favorable terms. Thenegotiating among the committees was tough, whenmembers are also friends and everyone is trying to do theirbest for the future of RYC!

November also had a fun side! Attending Props and Shafts,Cups and Flags, and the High School Sailing Team AwardsNights were so worthwhile and the display of silver wasmost impressive. But more importantly, almost everyrecipient was in attendance! Many thanks to Kirk andSandy Simpson, Chris and Lisa Dorsey, and Linda Summersfor the polishing, distributing, arranging for the engraving, and displaying the trophies and contributing so much oftheir time and effort.

The water main project has finally been completed! Manythanks go to Bud Webb for managing it to completion.

For those members who have boats stored in the shed, thebig roll “up” door has been rolled “down” until spring.Keys to the personal doors are available from KarenGerwitz in the office.

Santa-a-a-a’s coming on Sunday, December 11th. See thenotice in the Log for all the details, but make certain thatyou make reservations for yourself and the kids, so the elvesknow what to pack for Santa to bring and distribute.

Our wonderful, annual Holiday Ball takes place onDecember 17th. Don’t miss it; a good time will be had byall. And… don’t forget to come down to the Club on NewYear’s Day. Great food and the Board members servepunch! Finally, please be aware that the RYC Clubhousewill be closed from January 2nd until it reopens on Friday,January 13th!

Wishing you all a Happy Holiday Season!Fred KarshickCommodore
