Some Things At RYC Never Change!

Dear Fellow Members:February has arrived and marks themiddle of the winter season. However,it will still be a busy month at RYCthis year.

Please make your reservations nowfor our traditional Valentine’s Daydinner party on February 14th.Speaking of reservations, please noteon this page a reproduction of the

RYC newsletters from 1909 and 1910, kindly provided by PeteTierney. You can see that “some things never change!”

February also brings the start of our seawall reconstructionproject in Bushfield’s Basin, restoring this portion of our yacht

harbor both structurally and aesthetically. Considering thatslip assignments for the upcoming boating season havealready been made by our Yacht and Harbor Committee, itgreat to see this reconstruction project underway.

February also marks the second month of our diningreciprocity arrangements with the Country Club of Rochester. All resident, surviving spouse and ancient mariner membershave full dining privileges at CCR throughout 2004. Pleasebe sure to welcome all CCR members when you see themenjoying dining privileges at our Club.

Enjoy the month and hopefully the February snow will helpkeep water levels up for the upcoming boating season!

Reservations Are No RYC Relic

Yesterday and today… some traditions will always be with us at RYC

This official RYC Cafe Servicepublication in 1909 and again1910 gently requests thatreservations be made, ironicallywithout once using the “r” word. The guide states: “One fact shouldbe impressed on the minds of ourmembers in connection with thecafe service, and that is, whencomtemplating giving a dinnerparty for four or five or more, tryand arrange to give the stewardadvance notice…”

Alone YachtRace in 2002-03, starts this year by announcing his strategy to build andcompete in a state-of-the-art Open 60 Spirit of Canada for the sixth edition of the 5-Oceans Solo Round the World Yacht Race (formerly Around Alone).

The Open 60 is designed to be sailed by just one person, is raced in the premier class, and is one of the fastest boats in sailing. Built of carbon fibre and designed to be aslight as possible, yet strong enough to withstand the worst the ocean can throw at itfor 28,000 miles, the new 60 foot Spirit of Canada will not only be built from cuttingedge technology, but it will be the largest project of it's kind ever done in Canada.

Derek Hatfield is Canada's premier solo ocean racer, and is one of only 126 sailors inhistory to finish a single-handed race around the globe.
