NOVELTY NEANDERTHAL MAN

MUSIC BACKGROUND:

Technically this does not qualify as a true cave song since the word "cave" does not appear anywhere either in the title or the lyrics. Nevertheless, it certainly can be considered a valid "caveman" song. In the eyes and thoughts of many, Neanderthal man is “caveman” personified.

The first fossil specimen of Homo neanderthalensis was discovered in 1848 in Forbes Quarry Cave at Gibraltar. But it wasn't until its discovery in Feldhoferhöhle in the Neanderthal (Neander Valley) of Germany in 1856 that it was officially recognized as a distinct human species and given its name. Since then nearly all the major skeletal remains of this type that have been discovered were found in caves throughout the Eastern Hemisphere. Over 70 Neanderthal specimens were found in Vindija Cave in Croatia and test performed by Svante Pääbo have proved that Homo neanderthalensis and Homo sapiens share their DNA. (Anon. 2010) “A 2010 report found that non-Africans and Neanderthals share 99.7% of their DNA… The Neanderthal genome project revealed in 2010 that, through interbreeding, Neanderthals may have contributed to the DNA of modern humans, likely between 50,000 and 60,000 years ago.” (Anon. 2018)

Thus the synonymous mental association of Neanderthal man with caves is perfectly justified. The song itself has all the traditional characteristics of a "caveman" song, namely, heavy, crude beat and primeval rhythms, etc. The lyrics simply consist of the same stanza repeated over and over again – I'm a Neanderthal man You're a Neanderthal girl Let's make Neanderthal love In this Neanderthal world.

Numerous studies have been published discussing and demonstrating probable contact with Homo sapiens and the various traces of Neanderthal man present in modern humans. These are primarily scientific studies based on DNA and other aspects. One of these, a French book, Un Néandertalien dans le metro [A Neanderthal Man in the Subway], manages to give the matter a slightly humorous touch.

Several expositions on Neanderthal man have been held over the years: the most recent in France being one at the Musée de Normandie in Caen which ran from June 2015 to January 2016 and another at the legendary Musée de l’Homme in Paris running from March 2018 to January 2019. Flip Sd: (All unless otherwise stated) You Didn't Like It Because You Didn't Think of It Notes: Eric Stewart, originally with The Mindbenders, formed his own group, Hotlegs, in 1970 and later the name was changed to 10CC. Stewart set up his own studio and this hit was recorded there. The simple lyrics were from "a phrase that Kevin and Lol had first started chanting traveling by taxi through central London and it was one that appealed to them as – in Lol's words – a 'sort of nursery rhyme.' " (Tremlett 1976) Creme told the story, "Eric had just gotten the four track machine in, so me and Kev said we'd come down and bang around a bit while he got the sounds organized – that's really how 'Neanderthal Man' came about. When Eric was testing the equipment, I started singing this tune while Kevin was playing the bass drum – so the track was partially developed when Eric was trying to build up a bass drum sound. I was singing into the bass drum. So after three or four tracks of drums, we almost had the whole thing together." Godley adds, "A guy from Philips [Dick Leahy] came around and said, ' That's a smash' so Eric wrote the middle eight [bars], and we finished it off properly. We did it again, and it was better – because it had a structure – it was resolved 'n all. It sold 2 million records world-wide – we saw a lot of money from that." (Betrock 1974) Stewart said, "As we did the four drum tracks Lol's voice was coming over into the control room at a very strange level – something that none of us had ever heard on any record. We hadn't been intending to feature the vocal at all; it was meant as a drum-track. (Tremlett 1976) Tremlett quotes Leahy as saying, "It's fabulous. It's a hit record. I will give you an advance of £500 if you'll let me release it …" "Philips released the record – and within five weeks, in the best fairy tale tradition, it became an international best-seller, reaching number one in Italy, selling over 500,000 in the United States, and becoming a major hit in France, Germany, Australia, Canada and Japan as well as Britain, selling in total over 2,000,000 copies." (Tremlett 1976) In England, it entered the charts on July 4, 1970 and climbed to the number 2 position, while in the States it only reached the number 22 position. One YouTube video has the trio performing the number on a stage lit by torches. Then it goes to three go-go girls in animal skin bikinis dancing on a sand dune and fades to one of the girls dancing for the band on stage. Primarily the 7-inch singles of this song released worldwide will be listed here. The releases of the song on LPs or CDs, compilations or other, will be kept to a minimum. The Mexican 45 single was titled, “El hombre de las nieves,” [The Man of the Snow or The Abominable Snowman]. Greg Kihn (vocal & guitar) (with lead guitar, bass, & drums) Prod: Mathew King Kaufman, Glen Kolotkin, & Kenny Laguna Prod. Co: Beserkley Records; Berkeley, CA Time: 3:16 Label: Beserkley BJ-5751 Flip Sd: Telstar

Spec: 7" 45rpm Notes: A rock 'n' roll revival group composed of musicians drawn from three bands in the Beserkley stable, namely, the Greg Kihn Band, Earthquake, and The Rubinoos. Kihn recalls – “The Spitballs project was a unique concept wherein musicians from all the Berserkley bands gathered simultaneously in the studio and each fronted a song of his choosing, with all the others playing and singing background at the same time… There was no rehearsal… and we only had two days of studio time. So it was bim bam boom! Everybody got to choose one song. And when it came time to work up the arrangements, I had these big pieces of paper and I wrote the chords – E, A, D, G. Everybody would change when I held up the next chord. Pretty intense, huh? And when I played guitar and I couldn't hold them up, I'd put them down on the floor like a hopscotch thing. I played guitar and jumped around on the hopscotch thing." (Tamarkin 1979) The album, which resulted from this session did not include this particular song. The Goldmine critic felt that it was "easy to see why. There's not a single element of the Hotlegs version that can be imagined listening to this… strictly for the collectors' archives." (Wagenaar 1979) It can also be argued that this version is far superior to the repetitive original by the Hotlegs. Here at least the Spitballs have given the song some life and added quite a bit of humor which was entirely lacking in the original. This could easily be one of the funniest "caveman" songs of them all. Some of the other caveman songs (e.g. Jim Backus and John Zacherle) try to be funny but only end up sounding stupid. The four lines of the original have been retained here, but, added to this, is a little banter between the Neanderthal man and his woman (see LY-RK). Two different "Telstar" 45 singles were released both with the same catalog number, one has "Neanderthal Man" on the flip side but the other does not. Side 1 starts with the disco slashing, pounding beat and then there is a short, spoken intro – “Two years ago we listened about a story of Neanderthal world. It was a story of people living in the interests of love. The same old story and the one they made in the club in music. Everybody’s here, maybe we’ll sing about it. Everybody here has to think about it – The story has been told – Now the music.” Then the 4-verse stanza is sung twice. Scratchy sounds lead to – “Nee-anderthal man/ Nee-anderthal girl,” which is sung by prolonging the first syllable. After the keyboard bridge the prolonged part is repeated and the stanza is sung again three times. Side 2 is supposed to be an instrumental disco version but it also has the same short, spoken intro as on side one. The melody is performed on keyboards with a few sighs here and there. Following scratchy sounds there is – “Nee-anderthal man/ Nee-anderthal girl” sung by prolonging the first syllable. At the end all comes to an abrupt stop. The short excerpt included on the compilation LP was taken from the middle of the 12” vocal version. It starts with the scratchy sounds and ends abruptly after the stanza is sung three times.
