GETTING TO THE START & FINISH LINEHALF & FULL MARATHON START LINE LOCATION: Constitution Ave NW at 14th St. NW* FINISH LINE LOCATIION: RFK Stadium Lot 7
BEST BET - RIDE THE METROStart: Take the Metro to Federal Triangle or Smithsonian station (Blue/Orange/Silver Line)
Finish: Take the Metro to the Stadium/Armory station (Blue/Orange/Silver Line)
We encourage runners to utilize the Metro for transportation to the start line to help resolve downtown traffi c congestion. The Metro will begin operating at 5:00AM on race day. Ride the Metro to the Federal Triangle or Smithson-ian station on the Blue, Orange and Silver Lines, a short walk to the Start Line Village along Constitution Ave NW between 14th St. NW and 9th St. NW. At the end of the race, take the Blue, Orange or Silver Lines from the Stadium/Armory Metro at the fi nish line back where you need to go.
DRIVING DIRECTIONSIf Metro is not your best option to get to and from the start and fi nish lines based on the adjusted Metro rail opening, we have partnered to allow runners to pre-purchase their race day parking in advance. Please visit runrocknroll.com/dc/event-details for more information and to purchase.
START LINE PARKING AVAILABLE:We have partnered with Parking Panda to allow runners and spectators to purchase race day parking by the start line, as well as throughout DC along the race course.
Be sure to check the listed hours of operation for the parking garage before purchasing. Anyone driving to the start line is recommended to be parked by 6:30 am. To purchase parking passes, visit runcocknroll.com/dc/transportation.
LIMITED FINISH LINE PARKING AVAILABLE:Parking at the Finish Line for runners and spectators is limited. Those wishing to park at the Finish Line will need to pre-purchase a Finish Line Parking Pass for parking at RFK Stadium. Limited spots are available — buy your pass online by visiting: runrocknroll.com/dc/event-details. Finish Line Parking is sold through UStreet parking. Parking will not be available for purchase the day of the event.
Race Day Tip: Plan ahead and arrive early to stay stress free. Purchase your Metro Pass in advance to save yourself from having to wait in line. Allow yourself plenty of time on race morning to get to the start line knowing that 25,000 other runners are headed to the same place.

LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL Virginia Resident Joe Har-ris to Run his 100th Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series EventBy Don Norcross
The November 2004 phone call stunned Joe Harris. A former Marine Corps lance corporal, Harris served in the Vietnam War. The man on the other end of the phone was his Vietnam company commander, 1st Lt Walt Smith.
The men had not spoken in 34 years.
Smith tracked down Harris via a Vietnam veterans website. During the course of the conversation, Smith learned that Harris was a runner. Smith, too, liked paving the pavement. Smith lived in a Phoenix suburb and invited Harris to run a race that was coming up in two months, the P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Half Marathon.
“It was kind of strange,” recalls Harris. “It wasn’t like we were friends. I was a lance corporal. He was an offi cer, the company com-mander. (But) when you share an experience like war, you have that common bond.”Harris had only been running for fi ve months and hadn’t stretched his racing distance be-yond a 10K, but he took up his fellow Marine’s invite and ran his fi rst half-marathon in Phoenix.
Next month in our nation’s capital, Harris, now 64, will run the Rock ’n’ Roll D.C. Half Marathon. It will be Harris’ 100th Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series event. From Seattle to Savan-nah, Ga., from San Diego to Philadelphia, from Dallas, Portland, Ore., New Orleans, Los An-geles, Cleveland, San Antonio and Las Vegas, no one has run as many Rock ‘n’ Roll events as Harris, a retired teacher.
“I’m just so humbled about the whole experi-ence,” says Harris. “I feel so blessed to have made so many friends and not only running friends, but friends who work for Competitor Group. It feels like family.”
After that phone call from his Marine company commander, Harris almost immediately ran a test 10-miler. His toes turned black. New shoes solved that issue and he was sold after completing the 13.1-mile event.“I felt so good accomplishing something like that,” he says. “I was hooked, hooked on dis-tance running.”
Of Harris’ previous 99 Rock ‘n’ Roll events, 15 have been marathons, 84 half marathons. His half PR: 1:58. Marathon PR: 4:26. In total, his career track record counts 25 marathons, 115 halves.
Asked what it is about running that so enamors him, Harris thinks about an old New Balance commercial that talks about one’s love-hate relationship with running.
“That indeed is what it is,” says Harris. “Some days, you don’t want to get out there. But no matter how bad you feel, you know you’re going to feel worse if you don’t go out and run.
“It doesn’t happen all the time, but when you hit that runner’s high you feel like you can run forever. There’s no feeling like that in the world.”

Better Than Ezra has always pos-sessed an uncanny ability to deliver a sticky melody. It just took time for the world to fi gure this out. As testament to frontman-songwriter, Kevin Griffi n’s pop prowess has now become an in-demand songwriter and producer across an array of genres (from Sugar-land’s “Stuck Like Glue” to Howie Day’s “Collide”) in the fi ve years since the band’s last album, Paper Empire. While penning tracks for other artists, Griffi n found himself squirreling away compositions he felt best belonged to the Better Than Ezra canon. He coaxed the band back together (which includes drummer Michael Jerome) to record in L.A. for six weeks with Beck and Phoenix producer Tony Hoff er. As testament to their inner-band harmony, ex-drummer Travis McNabb, still tight with the band, fi lled in on percussion in the studio while Jerome was on tour.

D.C. RUNNING SPOTSIf you sights are set on seeing all the nation’s capital has to off er, there is no better way than on foot.
The Monuments and the National Mall: Steeped in history and revered by all, the miles surrounding the National Mall are a must see for any runner. In a short run, you can see the White House, the Capitol and all the monuments. Traveler tip: Run straight from your hotel to and around the monuments and then take the Metro back to the hotel.
Mount Vernon Trail: Located just across the river from downtown Washington, D.C., is a multi-use recreation trail. Nearly 18 miles long and right along the Potomac River, this fl at and easy to fi nd trail off ers breathtaking views of the river and the D.C. monuments.
Rock Creek Park: Another paved bike path is the Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway, which runs past Dupont Circle, through the National Zoo, and onward. Much of it is shaded and off ers a much needed escape from a mostly urban city.
C&O Canal/Capital Crescent: A fl at, crushed gravel path that runs for more than 100 miles to the northwest, well into Maryland. Every mile is marked, which is great for getting splits on your runs or deciding when to turn around. Both trails lead straight into the heart of Georgetown, which off ers an abundance of dining options!
Capital Crescent Trail: This rail-trail was built upon the abandoned rail bed of the 11-mile Georgetown Branch of the B&O Railroad. The trail is paved from Georgetown to Bethesda (approximately 7 miles), then becomes a tem-porary gravel trail from Bethesda to Rosemary Hills in west Silver Spring. Four bridges and two tunnels off er trail users gentle gradients and grade-separated roadway crossings. The trail closes at dusk (open to commuters). TRAIN
It’s too late to start now, but you need to respect the distance
you’ve chosen to walk or run. There are many diff erent training
programs available to you. Be sure you chose one that had you complete at least 2/3 of the race
distance several times during your training period. If not,
slow down and participate at a comfortable pace.
HYDRATE
If you have not calculated your fl uid needs for this race, there are two strategies which will ensure
you don’t under or over-hydrate. The easiest is to only drink when you are thirsty. If you want to be a little more scientifi c, limit fl uid
intake to 4-8 oz of sports drink every 20 minutes.
SALT
Losing salt through sweating and complex hormone changes
during exercise can result in lowering your serum [blood]
sodium level. This will not only aff ect your performance, it
may lead to muscle cramping, headache, dizziness and
confusion. Have some sports drink along the course to
quench your thirst, or follow your pre-planned schedule.
PLEASE
Fill out the medical information section on the back of your bib number. While serious medical
problems are quite rare, knowing any medical problems you have,
medications you are taking or allergies to medications is
extremely helpful to our Medical Volunteers. Our goal is to treat all
of our athletes like Rock Stars.

We create a support network for military members and their families, bridge the gap between military and civilian communities and create a living memorial for our country’s fallen military mem-bers. wear blue: run to remember exists for the fallen, for the fi ghting and for the families.
At offi cial wear blue events, American fl ags are lined along the race course to honor the Fallen, a tribute called the wear blue mile. Placed in front of these fl ags are large posters with photographs of the Fallen. The wear blue mile
