The OCTOBER 2017 Newsletter for First UMC Family and Friends First United Methodist Messenger Rockingham, NC Greetings in the Name of Jesus Christ! The One Who Is, the One Who Was, and the One Who is to Come! This past week we moved from Summer to Fall on the calendar after making the transition a little earlier as foot- ball season began. For our church, the Fall season will often be hectic and harried as rebound from The Holy Smoke BBQ & Music Festival into “Eat, Pray, Learn,” remembering the saints, and preparing for the Christmas sea- son. This annual mash-up prompted one of my colleagues years ago to create the moniker HalloThankMas. This year I invite us to slow down a little and really pay attention to the spiritual practice of gratitude. Some years ago, Don Moen wrote these words for a simple hymn: Give thanks with a grateful heart Give thanks to the Holy One Give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ, His Son. And now let the weak say, “I am strong” Let the poor say, “I am rich” Because of what the Lord has done for us Moen reminds us that when things are not going our way that we can always give thanks! I personally often find that when things are going my way I also forget to give thanks. Why? The practice of gratitude is often rejected in favor of its opposite, ingratitude. That may not be the emotion we name, but ingratitude emerges when nostalgia for the way things used to be, worry about how things might go wrong, feeling entitled limits our thinking, greed poisons our relationship with possessions or disappointment with the outcome shrink our hearts. These enemies of gratitude: nostalgia, worry, entitlement, greed, and disappoint- ment, causes us to forget the blessings God offers us every day. How about you? When have these enemies of gratitude clouded your thinking? Send me a note at [email protected] or text me at 910-420-0759 with your thoughts. While I wait for your thoughts, know that our family gives thanks every day to serve alongside the saints and sinners of First United Methodist Church of Rockingham! Grace and Peace! Allen

Greetings in the Name of Jesus Christ! The One Who Is, the One Who Was, and the One Who is to Come! This past week we moved from Summer to Fall on the calendar after making the transition a little earlier as foot-ball season began. For our church, the Fall season will often be hectic and harried as rebound from The Holy Smoke BBQ & Music Festival into “Eat, Pray, Learn,” remembering the saints, and preparing for the Christmas sea-son. EAT, PRAY, LEARN! Eating together is one of the oldest traditions of the church. Praying together leans into the practice of Mary and her son Jesus, whom she taught to pray, “Not my will, but thine be done.” Learning from the fathers and mothers of the faith – being trained up the way we should go – is another way we learn to love God, love others, and love the world! Starting on Tuesday evening October 3 and ending on Tuesday, November 7, we will gather for an evening meal at 5:30 PM and then break into learning groups from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. We will need at least three participants to teach each class. Come join the jour-ney as we EAT, PRAY, AND LEARN together. The following are the offerings for this Fall: ( ) Discovering Pathways to Spiritual Growth We will explore Malcolm Goldsmith’s book Knowing Me, Knowing God and see what our Myers-Briggs Type indicator may tell us about how we might best grow spiritually. The heart of this study will be completing a spirituality questionnaire and interpreting the results in connection to spirituality. The intent of the book is to explore ways in which each one of us might better open our hearts and minds to God. Leader: Allen Bingham Meeting in the Conference Room ( ) God Heard Their Cry by Ray Vander Laan Why not experience the Bible for yourself? Join renowned teacher and historian Ray Vander Laan as he guides you through the land of the Bible. In each lesson, Vander Laan illuminates the historical, geographical, and cultural context of the sacred Scriptures. Filmed on location in the Middle East, the Faith Lessons DVD series will transform your understand-ing of God and challenge you to be a true follower of Jesus. Leader: Sherry Boyette Meeting in the Bynum Building ( ) Our Faithful Promise: The Wesleyan Covenant for Renewal A covenant is an agreement, a pledge, a contract. A covenant with God is a faithful promise of renewal, and none is more central to the Methodist identity than The Wesley Covenant Prayer, which John Wesley first shared in a renewal service in 1755. This covenant prayer focuses on the way we can have a closer relationship with God and others through a height-ened commitment to a serious faith. Leader: Margaret Leak Meeting in Room 101 Registration forms are available at the Church Office . Choose the study you wish to attend and submit payment of $10 for the book cost. The dead-line to sign up is September 28. Come be a part of this exciting study ministry at FUMC when we will Eat, Pray, Learn together!

Church Family,

Thank you all so very much for the outpouring of love shown to our family with cards, flowers, memorials and prayers during our loss of Mary Ellen, and during her extended illness. She loved you all and she especially loved her church. The visitation and funeral were a fitting tribute to all her life touched over the years and our family truly appreciates the love and friendship. Thank you also to the ladies of FUMC for preparing us such

wonderful lunch in the Fellowship Hall after the service. She will be so missed but we have the comfort of knowing that she is whole again with our LORD. —I am HE who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you. Isaiah 46:4
