RockSolid v5 Upgrade Manual
Preliminary Server Upgrade Checks
Read through this document entirely. If you have a question on a procedure, contact us.
Make sure the user that is logged into the server has Administrator permissions. {pg 9}
Make sure you are currently running RockSolid POS v4.13.13 – if not, contact us.
All Windows Updates need to be done, in Internet Explorer – Tools – Windows Update. {pg 10}
Upgrading RockSolid to v5 should be done after store hours, after running your End of Day,
Backup, & Compact in RoMan. It is also recommended to run your full Rock directory backup to
an external device or LAN storage.
All stations are to be logged out of all RockSolid programs & RockSocket closed (if applicable).
PCCharge (if applicable) needs to be shut down.
Antivirus should be disabled completely, or needs to be configured to exclude both the
[Drive]:\Program Files {(x86)}\Rock\ and C:\RSinstallTemp\ directories from active scanning until
the installation completes. Adding these directories to the AV exclusion area is good practice for
conducting business also, as they often provide “false positives” in our software.
Preferred computers should have at least 10 gigs free drive space & at 2 gigs RAM installed.
IMPORTANT: On the server, in RoMan, click Help then About and copy down the database path
of the current Rock directory.
In this example, the path is
C:\Program Files\Rock\
Write down your database path below.
DB Path=_______________________________________________

Checking the data
On the server, download www.rocksolidpos.com/SMaRT_NexG.exe to the desktop, double click the
icon, and Run if prompted. Click Start -- this will unpack the SQL Migration and Readiness Tool to the
desktop into a folder named SMaRT – open this folder and double click the SMRT icon, which will begin
the database check. This will take a few minutes to perform, and should give results confirming your
database’s SQL readiness. If it tells you otherwise, log back into RoMan, upload files to RockSolid &
contact support.
Download & Installation of RockSolid v5
Get the newest v5 RockSolid Feature Pack in RoMan >> Utilities >> Support >> press the [Get Feature
Pack Now!] button. A download window will pop up and show the progress. After downloading
competes, exit & reopen RoMan on the server, this will trigger the upgrade to begin.
If the computer does not meet the required performance specs, the installer will give a window to initial
and continue. These are not determined to be absolute minimums required, but much less than the
recommended minimum may cause serious performance issues.
IMPORTANT: If you ever have to restart the v5 installer, you will be asked to Modify, Repair, or
Remove by the screen below – always choose Repair.

Beginning Server Installation:
Merge Modules will install first, and should push the computer through a quick reboot (if not, it’s okay –
the modules have been installed before). After rebooting, the installer should prompt to continue – if it
does not continue on its own after rebooting, type or copy-and-paste the following command in the Start
>> Run box in Windows – C:\RSinstallTemp\RockSetup.exe – this will restart the installer.
Alternatively, you can open Windows explorer on your computer and double click the icon below:
Press Next throughout the installation after following instructions. Accept the agreement & press Next.
Choose the RockSetup.exe
without the space in the name.
This file restarts the installer.

The Destination Folder should match the DB Path= entry that was recorded before beginning. This is
very important to have match. Press Change… if correction is needed & select the proper destination.
Select the RockSolid POS Server radio button and press Next. It is now ready to begin the server
installation, click Install. You may need to press Next & Install again. This will trigger Microsoft SQL
Server 2008 R2 to begin its installation, which can take from several minutes up to an hour to install.
Press Change… if the installation
path does not match the path
you recorded earlier!

Typical SQL Server 2008 R2 installation screenshots:
Several windows will appear & disappear throughout the installation and may appear hung up at times.
Be patient, this is a processor-intensive procedure and will take some time.
Once the SQL installation is complete, the data migration will begin – this can be a very long process.
This can take up to several hours to complete, depending on the size of your database & the speed of
the computer. If this appears to be hung “Moving Tables”, it is not – DO NOT STOP THIS PROCESS!!
Contact support if you feel this is not operating correctly.

Once the Migration is complete, click Finish to end the server installation, and it will now begin installing
the “client” side of the program. The client is installed on every station, including the server.
The client installer looks very much like the server installer for the most part, just click Next or Install
when prompted! Once complete, the installer will prompt to reboot the machine. Do this, then log in
to RoMan to ensure you’re on the newest version. Now we’re ready to upgrade the workstations!
